I don't want to beat a dead horse here with another "Fire Shittenheimer" thread.. it should be clear to all by now that the guy is a freaking joke and has to go. My question is who are we going to get to replace him after the season? IMO, we need to bring someone in from the outside instead of promoting Callahan or Cavanaugh. It's not like those guys have done that great of a job in their respective roles anyway. Obviously if we fired Schitty mid-season it would have to be one of those 2, but I'm going on the idea it won't be til after the season that a change is made. We need a fresh look at things, a new set of eyes to come in and evaluate what's going on.. and Tom Moore is not a realistic candidate I don't think, so who can be available? -- My first thought was Norv Turner.. he's definitely on the way out in San Diego and has a reputation as one of the best QB coach/OC's around. -- An assistant, preferably a QB coach, from a team like the Packers or Saints.. someone who has been around a creative and successful offense. Schitty learned under his old-school dad Marty where the play in SD was "give the ball to LT". -- Someone with a Rex connection.. unfortunately, I don't even know who this could be. I know Rex wanted Hue Jackson when he took over, but obviously that is not an option. Rex worked with Brian Billick, but I doubt Billick is looking to come back as a coordinator instead of head coach. Thoughts?
No idea. Only Callahan and Tom Moore come to mind. There isn't another decent OC available unless there are some serious shake ups throughout the league due to crappy play by teams down the stretch.
I doubt Norv will want to serve under Rex after the little spat they had a few weeks ago. I think Norv has enough pride to not want to put himself in that position, but who knows, if he gets no other offerings maybe he will get hired. for a realistic candidate you probably have to starting scouting QB coaches around the league looking for a promotion. I doubt we want to hire other teams trash at OC at they had just fired (not including HCs like Norv, only fired OCs) But honestly, I really don't see Schotty going anywhere. I really think Rex has a better relationship/ trusts Schotty more than Sanchez. I think Sanchez would go or be benched before Schotty gets the boot. We need a new OC, but I really think that the coaching staff thinks they aren't the problem, Sanchez is.
Our next OC will be treated the same way this one has and the same way every OC gets treated by fans. It's always the OCs fault to your average fan.
If they pick Shittenheimer over Sanchez and don't give their QB a chance to work with a better coach whose system isn't complete garbage, then the clock is going to start ticking on Tanny and Rex, it's that simple.
What has Shittenheimer done here that makes anyone think he can lead this team to anything more than mediocrity? He's proven it time and time again.. Chad did nothing under him, then left and finished 2nd in MVP voting the very next year. Favre didn't respect him at all, played poorly in this garbage system, then left and had the best year of his career. There's no reason to think if they trade Sanchez and keep Schitty that Sanchez won't go and flourish elsewhere while Schitty submarines another QB here for a 22nd ranked offense.
+1 But right now Sanchez is a mess. Maybe a new approach, system (West Coast?) or voice can straighten him out. And all the O staff should be on notice.
Look at Denver. Denver started the season with Orton in a "real" system. Tebow comes in and they install a new system for him within a few weeks that focuses on his strengths and lets Tebow be Tebow. That's how a real OC works. Not saying I want Tebow or Denver's shitty OC, but why oh why is this team incapable of hiring an OC who will be aggressive & adaptable.
He's been the OC w/ a 1st and 2nd yr QB that helped us get to the doorstep of the SB. who cares about favre? he never wanted to be here and he sabotaged our season.
When the Chiefs were on a skid and plsying poorly losing their first three and it was reported that Haley would've been canned if they would've lost to Indy, I was thinking that maybe Haley would be a decent OC candidate if available. He has been in the Jets organization in the past as an offensive assistant and as a WRs' coach. I think Haley is a great offensive mind and has a good resume, and he couldn't be worse than Schotty. Especially his time as the OC of the Cardinals back in 07 and 08 were brilliant. Then again he had Warner throwing the ball to Fitz and Boldin. But this is a pure speculative post about the matter, as there is no guarantee KC will can him and if he would even be interested in coming back to the Jets or if Rex has any interest in him.
But does Rex want an aggressive offense? They tried that the 1st 4 weeks and then Rex says they are going back to who they are, ground and pound.
So he's been the OC of a team whose offense held them back.. a team that's been consistently below average-average on O during his tenure. And Favre is relevant to the debate because he's a hall of famer. Schitty can't use the excuse of having limited QB's or whatever, because he had one of the best and couldn't do anything with him.
Agree... Schotty's system really clashes both with Sanchez & the mentality of this team. If the solution comes from the inside Callahan would be my preferred choice. Or Tom Moore if he wants to get back into thegame full time. Otherwise what about Tom Clements, QB coach of the Packers? http://www.packers.com/team/coaches/tom-clements/bb67e02f-a2b1-4543-83af-00f437249c9f
Please state facts if you use these examples..Chad was name Comeback Player of the Year in 2006. Favre injured his shoulder, which required offseason surgery, and then went back to playing in a system he had played in for 15 years, with a healthy shoulder...Nevermind the fact that he didn't want to play for the Jets. That said -- Sanchez is a mess. To try and save his Jets career its time for a new offensive philosophy and the whole O staff should be on notice
Our offnese hasn't held us back, our O has been good enough to win big with. our D held us back in the last 2 title games.
Well that's sort of my point. This isn't about just what Rex or the coaching staff wants. If he wants ground and pound, he should get players that fit his scheme. How does a "ground and pound" team not have some serious o-line depth? How does a "ground and pound" team have Mulligan as its "blocking" TE. If he wants a ground and pound team, you don't need guys like Keller, Holmes, Edwards. You need to build an offense like the late 90s early 2000s KC Chiefs. Rex has a passing team. Pass blocking LT, highly paid QB, pass catching TE, and WRs for a passing game.
So you think we had success the past 2 years nearly making the Super Bowl because of our offense moreso than our defense... ummm...
Maybe we can give Cavanaugh an opportunity, he believes in the run first to set up the pass philosophy, it's also in line with what Rex wants, he is also familiar with MS strengths and weaknesses. He played in the NFL and has won SB's as a player and coach, the Ravens team with him as OC ran the ball with success, they just never had a QB to complement their running game. Whoever we get has to set up a system that works with our QB's strengths, PA pass, bootleg and moving the pocket. If we get some one who has the same philosophy that BS has, pass first and sprinkle in the run it will be DejaVu all over again.
Nope, we are a D first team but the O has contributed. You still need to score, you still need to make big plays on O and our O has done that. We failed to reach the SB b/c our D was smoked in each of the title games.
