The thread title speaks for itself. Is it actually possible that one or both of these guys gets released this season? Enough is enough already. I always thought Eric Smith was good for his one "big hit", but now it's only him lacking the ability to tackle and play in coverage. And Mulligan. Man, Matthew Mulligan is hot trash. I'm talking it's 95 degrees outside, and you have the Mulligan trash can sitting on the curb, it's a holiday so garbage isn't being collected, and you are a pedestrian wondering why the homeowner leaves the trash at the curb when they know it's not going to be collected that day.
Mulligan isn't impossible. Smith pretty much is. And he's not a completely terrible player. But he is not a starting safety in the NFL. He's a slightly better version of Ihedigbo.
I doubt either of them are cut during the season. More likely the team will just let them walk once their deals are up.
I think we will see Hunter /Tomlinson/ Thomas / Smith / Pool / Mulligan / Conley / Brunell and Folk gone. De vito and Moore will have to restructure due to the cap or as a rotational DL and ageing RG they will also be gone. Ducasse is interesting as if cut he is %1.5 dead money against the cap...Tanny may offer him a gholston restructure Sanchez will play out his 4th year as he will not extended off the back of this year
Im convinced this is Mulligans last game as a Jet, hopefully they use that altercation as an excuse to cut his ass
WTF was Mulligan mad about? He had another brutal penalty on him. Does he think he should have gotten a slap on the ass and an attaboy when he arrived on the sideline?
Mulligan is as good as gone, Rex isn't going to keep a penalty machine around. I doubt Smith goes anywhere though. The best we can hope for is that we turn him into a backup again.
smith is sticking around. He isnt a starter, but a decent rotational safety. He sticks around, and once we get an upgrade at the starter spot, he will go back to his old role, and be just fine.
Mulligan could very well be gone after this game. His mistake continue to mount up and then you have the sideline incident.
About Mulligan I agree... about Smith are you kidding me!? Ok so he's not starting material but he can still be useful in many ways on this team. When we have 3 safeties on the field and on ST he is VERY effective. He's just trash when it's only him and Leonhard back there... too much space to cover for such a slow guy.
Mulligan seems to contribute more via penalty than anything else at this point. It wouldn't surprise me if he's cut this week. Eric Smith, on the other hand, isn't going anywhere. He's widely considered our best special teamer (he's our STs captain, after all) and he's not a bad 3rd/in-the-box safety. He just shouldn't be a starter. Safety continues to be our biggest liability on defense. No team can afford having two safeties that struggle in coverage. One has to go/sit and that's probably going to be Smith after this season. We'll need to find a new starter either via free agency or a trade since the safety position isn't very strong in this upcoming draft.
Smith won't get cut but Mulligan may. He's a penalty machine. I'm not sure who's out there but I imagine somebody must be
