    Madden: Sandusky a State secret

The Jerry Sandusky situation seems a matter of failure to connect certain dots, or perhaps unwillingness in that regard. Lots of people besides the former Penn State defensive coordinator have some explaining to do.

Allegations of improper conduct with an underage male first surfaced in 1998, while Sandusky was still employed by Penn State. That incident allegedly occurred in a shower at Penn State's on-campus football facility. No charges were filed.

Sandusky retired the next year, in 1999. He was 55, prime age for a coach. Odd, to say the least - especially with Joe Paterno thought even then to be ready to quit and Sandusky a likely, openly-discussed successor.

It seems logical to ask: What did Paterno know, and when did he know it? What did Penn State's administration know, and when did they know it?

Best-case scenario: Charges are never brought, and Sandusky walks away with his reputation permanently scarred. The rumors, the jokes, the sideways glances - they won't ever stop. Paterno and Penn State do the great escape.

The student that witnessed what happened told his father. His father told him to come home and talk to him about what happened. His father then proceeded to get a hold of Joe Paterno. Joe told the grad student to come over and explain what he witnessed. The student told Joe that he witnessed something that could

possibly involve some hanky panky. He NEVER went into detail when talking to Joe Paterno about what he saw. He even admitted that. He never told Joe that the boy was a minor. He never told Joe that there was anal sex taking place. Joe Paterno then followed his chain of command and reported it to his surperior. That's

what you do. For you that have jobs, ff you report something to your surperior, they usually get back with you, with the response "It's been taken care of." Well whats that mean? Does that mean a talk? Does that mean they are being turned over to the authorities? Does that mean they are being fired? When you are told

it's been taken care of, you leave it at that, Because after that point it's no longer your business if it didnt involve you. What is he supposed to do? Pull a Jessie Jackson and hold protests and riots all around campus until justice is served? He didn't know the extent of the matter. He was not given the proper details. Joe Pa is

the best and always will be the best coach to ever coach the game of football. He is a great man and if you fail to see that then im sorry because you simply lack intelligence.

What both you guys are missing is that it's Paterno's reaction to the revelations that got him canned. He was more interested in playing Nebraska than showing some humility and shame. He just "didn't get it", and he would have taken down the whole university by staying on

Do you know if Joe P was told about the 1998 incident and investigation?

Why did his DC and supposed successor "retire" in 1999?

Because when investigations take place they release all the details right? Like I said, a coach and another male were in the shower is a lot different then a coach having anal sex with a 12 year old boy in shower.

At least we know how little integrity they have. Rather than protest that he would coach despite turning a blind eye to child molestation inside his program they protest because he wad fired for doing so.

When you crack some men open you find nothing, because they are nothing.

Others you get the rotten stench of shit because that is all they have been fed and it is all that they are.

And some you find a solid core of rock and steel. Those are men who stand with integrity and can't be broken no matter how hard you try.

It is obvious what kind of men Paterno was guiding on his current team if this is true.

After 1998 sandusky admitting what he did was wrong...Are you saying Joe didn't know about that incident? Then his DC "retires" within a year later...And then in 2002 his ex-DC is in the shower with a 10-12yr old boy and told something that could possibly involve some hanky panky....

I would be nice to get the names of the PSU students rioting last night in support of an enabler of a serial pedophile. When they finally graduate, I am sure the job market would be shut to them.

As for players who might boycot the game in support of Pedoterno, it would be further evidence the entire program should be shut down for a while. Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail.

Every hour, it seems like the value of a Penn State diploma goes further down the toilet.

Then how do you explain the forced resignation by Sandusky? JoePa and the higher-ups knew what was going on, if not in 98, definitely after 2002. A man of his stature and his power within that campus should've have done more. Whether he didn't pursue the matter further than reporting it to the AD was due to some sense of loyalty/friendship to Sandusky or an attempt to save Penn State from an absolutely embarrassing and vile scandal (look how great that turned out if so), THERE IS NO EXCUSE. JoePa is guilty of turning a blind eye to these despicable actions, should he be arrested? Absolutely not. But does he deserve to be canned and be criticized by the media? SURELY. He should've resigned, but his attempt "to call their bluff" as one poster said was not only foolish but selfish. I have very little respect for this man now.

As for McQueary (a Graduate Assistant, not a student), he'll get his. That ginger fucker should've stepped in and done something, or at the very least filed a police report in tandem to telling JoePa and his joke of a father. And he should get it worse than JoePa.

He's not a GA now. He was "promoted" to asst coach shortly after 2002.

I don't want to go into some diatribe, but this is quite simple. Jerry Sandusky was a predator. Stereotypical, too. Read the GJT. As much of it as you can stomach, at least. Every victim fell into the same trap....free stuff, trips to major NCAA and NFL games, then...a hand on a knee, an "Innocent" little game of wrestling, a little showering, a little guilt put out there because "you're not showering close enough to me," etc....I not going any further. It's sick and it's the classic power play and "I'm going to use that to fuel my sick perversions." Thank God some of these poor kids didn't get it as bad as others. That's the only remote good thing I've seen.
Saying this, I don't think anyone's putting JoePa or even McQueary into this category. Not even close. Listen, I'm a Penn State fan since the mid 80s. I still respect Joe Paterno no matter what, but some of you need to put things inhto perspective. He just lost his job. That's it. He had 50-60 years of greatness, something those kids will probably never had. He was going to retire anyway. He fucked up here, there's no doubt, and the University completely did the right thing. I think in hindsight, Paterno will realize that himself, and soon. He has admitted himself he fucked up.
I know some of you cats may be young guys, but as you get older and you put life into perspective, and you develop a family and have children, you'll realize that this is the worst thing that has EVER happened in collegiate sports. It's terrible, especially, that it happened at the school that I root for, but this is terrible. It's very comparable to what's happened with the Catholic priests, a guy using his position to get what he wants, and a bunch of other guys of power turning a blind eye hoping they can forget about what's going on around them. It's really sad and it cuts to the core.
