Biggest thing with Mark and his progression, that I really feel can't be stressed enough, is how early in his career he is......the average analyst/fan will look at Sanchez as a year three QB and want to make comparisons to other QB's who were in their third year.... In my opinion though, the most accurate way to compare QB's, is by the # of throws they have, college + pro's combined......it's like innings pitched or at bats, in baseball. Mark Sanchez is currently at 1,617 career passes between USC and the Jets, and is on pace for a 84 QB rating. Peyton Manning hit 1,600 career passes in his rookie season, finished the year with a 71.2 QB Rating. Drew Brees hit 1,600 career passes, while still in college. Tom Brady hit 1,600 career passes in his third year, 2nd as starter, finished the year with a 85.7 QB rating. Phillip Rivers hit 1,600 career passes while still in college. Eli Manning hit 1,600 career passes at the very beginning of his 2nd season, finished the year with a 75.9 QB rating. Ben Roethlisberger finished his rookie season with 1,599 career passes, and a 98.1 QB rating. Matt Ryan hit 1,600 career passes his rookie year, and finished with a QB rating of 87.7 Joe Flacco hit 1,600 career passes in his 2nd season, and finished the year with a QB rating of 88.9 Chad Henne hit 1,600 career passes in his 2nd season, and finished the year with a QB rating of 75.2 Now this doesn't mean Mark is going to be better than any of the QB's listed above, or even on par with any of the QB's listed above.....it just means that at his current rate of experience, he's damn near a rookie QB in this league.......and any real progression is still to come, just as it was in 95% of the guys listed above. The fact he's done all this learning at the pro level (he's got twice as many NFL throws as college throws) and has made strides every single year......speaks volumes as to the kind of kid he is, the kind of talent he has, and the kind of potential still remaining.. (Also, in 7 of his 8 games this year, he has a combined completion percentage of 61.6%, and a QB rating of 92.4......damn impressive for a kid with 1,600 career throws)
Its also easier to say that he sucks. But do not forget that he is getting NFL level coaching and benefiting from NFL level talent as well so you cannot say that some of the passes that he has had in the NFL are equivalent to certain passes in college.
I don't think the most accurate way to assess a QB is by the number of throws they made. It's about game experience and what they learned from different situations throughout their career.
Agreed, but I also think that cuts both ways.....yes you benefit from NFL level coaching, but you're also hurt by hitting the NFL without that experience under your belt (and thus have to learn things at the NFL level, that you should have learned in college),.....and you also have to go against NFL players, and thus all your mistakes are capitalized on, whereas they likely wouldn't have been in college. Now, that isn't to say that this is a perfect algorithm to projection a QB's abilities or potential........my only point is that it's far better than the "Year 3 = Year 3" analysis the vast majority of writers/analysts/fans put forth. (i.e. - the Henne/Sanchez comparisons everyone wanted to try and make the last two years)
I think the experience issue is real. Sitting on the bench at USC was definitely not as good experience as playing there would have been. That said he has gotten a lot of throws in the NFL and he is improving year over year. From the standpoint of who I would like having play for the Jets in 2011 there are certainly people who I think would do better for us this season. Maybe even from the standpoint of 2011-2012. There aren't a lot of people that I'd prefer to have from 2011 to 2016 though.
I get where ur going, but... still needs to clean up the momentum killing fuckups. (great kid. rooting like all get out for him to make a quantum inprovement)
He's never going to "clean-up" the momentum killing fuckups. All QB's make them. On really talented teams they mean a lot less. For a few hall of fame bound QB's they happen a bit less often. Both Tom Brady and Eli Manning made multiple momentum killing fuckups today. So did Philip Rivers. Every QB does those things. Mark Sanchez threw his first red zone interception of the season today in the 8th game of the year. He'll throw more.
I'm fine with Sanchez ... i think we can win with him. but when I see What Newton and Dalton are doing right from square one, it shows me that he'll never be a top of the league QB. all you need to do is look honestly at the way all three play. he'll be good ... and that will have to be good enough.
Considering Newton and Dalton were four year starters and Sanchez only 1 they should be doing better from square one. I still think Sanchez in the end will become a "good" QB. Probably not a Manning, Rodgers, Brees, Brady, etc. But good enough to where you can win with him. Similar to the Giants and Eli.
"Similar to the Giants and Eli." i'm down with that. ps- saw alotta really nice catches Daltons recievetrs are making. as well as Cams.
If he becomes a solid QB for a decade we'll probably win a ring or two with him on the back of Rex's great defensive teams. If he becomes a great QB for a decade we'll probably win a ring or two with him on the back of Rex's great defenses. The thing I am looking for the Jets to improve right now is the defensive trenches. If I see a Suh, Sapp, Greene type player in there then I'll start thinking they might win 3 or 4 rings. Assuming of course that they have Sanchez at QB alongside what would be one of the best defenses in NFL history.
Hopefully Sanchez continues to win without putting up good numbers. That way you can sign him to a very reasonable deal when his contract is up and use the money for locking up great defensive players.
I think the LA team is going to be really hot for him if they haven't locked up a franchise option some other way. I expect the Jets to extend Sanchez next year, hopefully either after or on the way to their first Super Bowl in 43 years.
might be as good as Eli on an average day, but not convinced that Sanchez at his best will ever be as good as Eli at his best. Eli just stands in and throws the football much better than Mark.
