Cam is a rookie and Sanchez is in year 3. Even if you don't think he will be as good as this first half of the season forever you can't deny he is on track to be better than Sanchez. We will get a clearer picture of just he good cam is in the next couple years when he starts playing with expectations. Right now he doesnt have any outside pressure to actually win. Putting up nice stats is good bough this year.
Yeah, he could be as good as Josh Freeman someday. Or if he keeps running to extend plays he could end up on IR. Time will tell.
9 is 50% more than 6, not 33. Newton also has 4 more touchdowns and 2 less fumbles, but I guess any stat other than W's are just fantasy. This means Mark Sanchez is better than Philip Rivers, but not as good as Andy Dalton. Oh and you're comparing a rookie's first 8 games with a 3rd year starter (AND THEY'RE STILL BETTER NUMBERS). You've gotten so used to mocking idiots here, which is easy, that you've forgotten to think yourself.
Newton looks really good but he has some really good pieces alongside him on offense. He has two runningbacks who have both been mainstays in the offense and had injuries in past seasons. He has Steve Smith. He has two good pass catching tightends in Olsen and Shockey. There's a lot there to help him along the way.
Keep in mind, Newton was thrown into the fire without offseason mini-camps and a shortened preseason. His production despite all that, is nothing short of remarkable at this level.
MARK my words... By the end of this year Sanchez will put up border-line pro bowl type numbers. Yes this was supposed to be his break out season and it will be. The off season just delayed the inevitable. I might be eating my words but, I seen enough throws, intangibles, foot work to say that when the Oline is healthy, Sanchez makes some precise passes. Last week was a perfect example on the pass to Keller that was taken away from him. On the first route Sanchez is hurried and makes tough throw but inaccurate to Keller. Later in the game the same play is called and this time Sanchez had time and makes a perfect pass. I might be a slightly biased bcuz I'm a Jet fan I don't think so lol. When given the protection Sanchez def delivers, and yes he can carry this team. Rt now is the midway point so only til we get to the end of the season we will know where Sanchez ranks. I
Wins vs numbers is a dumb debate. Like many had said before if you compare Newtons numbers to the hall of fame qbs rookie years he will make then look like backup qbs. So this article is hottt garbage
Now I see what puck was referring to in the other thread. Who gives a shit about Newton, he is on another team, in another conference and in a different situation. Might as well compare just about anybody to Sanchez.
I agree that he looks really impressive. Just pointing out that he's not doing it in the desert without water. If Carolina was expected to do anything this season they would have put handcuffs on Newton so that he didn't get in the way and we might well have a completely different impression of him. If their defense was worth anything he would have been protecting leads instead of playing catchup all year. It's just a perfect situation for a strong-armed rookie with mobility to get thrown into. He has no expectations and all the opportunity in the world to show off his stuff.
Baseless assumption. Most HOF QBs actually had good rookie years statistically. In the current class: Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers (in his first year as a starter) all had solid or better rookie seasons. Let's see... Marino had a great rookie year then threw for 5000 year 2. Elway's was shitty. Montana was a 65% passer his first season as a starter. I'm not going to look into the 60s and 70s when even good QBs had shitty numbers, the game has evolved.
Just noting that neither Aaron Rodgers nor Tom Brady belongs in the conversation when discussing rookie QB performance. Rodgers was watching Brett Favre his rooke year and Brady was the guy relaying the stolen call signs on the sidelines his rookie year.
Don't even mention Brady or Rodgers. You are a rookie your first year in the league not when you make your first start. If we did to Sanchez what GB did to Rodgers Sanchez would still be on the bench this year.
How many of you guys have been reading Cimini since he started covering the Jets ? I've been reading him for 20 years, going back to Newsday. He's not anti-Jets. He's calling it like he sees it. It's in his best interest -- from a personal and financial perspective -- to have the Jets do well. As the Jets lead beat writer/columnist for Newsday, The Daily News, and now ESPNNewYork, he gets alot more publicity and inquiries when the Jets do well. If you guys think on a personal or professional level he's happier if the Jets go 4-12 and back to the Kotite Years, you aren't that bright. Disagree with Cimini, correct a factual mistake, argue with the statistics he employs -- but spare me the baloney that he doesn't know anything about football. He's covered the Jets 24/7 since 1990 or thereabouts, and unles some of you are independently wealthy and can spend all your time watching film and scouring the internet (since 1998) 24/7, the guy must know SOMETHING, right ?
Cimini is suffering from New York Media Beast Syndrome. All good Jets writers eventually turn into cynics because they're writing for a fan base full of cynics.
Phil Simms lost his job by Parcells in 1983 (his 5th year in the NFL) and didn't break out until 1984 or maybe 1985. In today's NFL, Simms wouldn't have stuck with the Giants that long. That's what makes the Alex Smith situation so unique (only the turmoil above him helped him stay long enough to get a decent coach/offensive gameplan).
