Joe Namath has made it clear he has no intention of ceasing his criticism of his former team, and now he’s taking cheap shots at Jets coach Rex Ryan’s weight.

After Ryan was spotted wearing a Namath jersey, Namath went on the radio and said he questioned how Ryan could pull the jersey over his ample gut.

“I’m just stunned that the jersey with No. 12 comes in that size,” Namath said, via ESPN.com.

Namath has been extremely critical of the Jets this year. At the start of the season he said he didn’t think Plaxico Burress would make it through the year. He later said Ryan had the team thinking they were better than they were. And as the season has gone on, Namath has ripped the Jets again and again and again.

Ryan has been admirably restrained in his responses to Namath’s constant criticism.

“Shoot, hey it doesn’t matter,” Ryan said. “I’m still a huge Joe Namath fan.”

The “huge” part is the one thing Ryan has said this year that Namath would agree with.

    Namath, please go away..

    Calling a fat man "fat" isn't a cheap shot... it's a fact.

C'mon guys... ok you don't like Namath as a radio personality but stop being whiny vaginas just because the guy makes fun of our morbidly obese HC.

This guy just needs constant attention huh?
It's kind of sad at this point. I really don't know what else there is to say that hasn't been said at this point. Fat jokes, Joe? Really?

this is why Namath needs to shut his trap.

I want to remember him as a Jets hero that led us to a championship. Not some attention-seeking old buzzard.

Unfortunately, the latter is becoming more apparent as the weeks go by.

Was it necessary? Did he really need to say that knowing its NY media and they would make a big deal of it. Rex should come out talk about his drinking problems, I mean calling a man a drunk cause he is , is okay by your logic

Namath leads us to one SB, the majority of his career was QB'ing a losing team, often hanging out when he should have been more professional.

Rex leads the team to two AFCCGs and this year, despite several distractions, we are just a game behind the Pats.

I know who I'd rather have....and it's the guy on the sidelines.

Shut up or go away Joe. You are the past and it could be argued, you're a millstone and have been for the past 42 years.

Except being fat has absolutely no effect on how you coach or motivate a team so it comes off as pretty lame to do it.

Get on Rex for his follies as a football coach and how he gets his team up, that's fine and everyone's entitled to their opinion. But when you bash someone for something that has nothing to do with football, then it just ruins your credibility and makes you look childish.

It'd be like if Rex Ryan said that he went trick or treating with the family in a Joe Namath jersey but then said "Oh and don't worry, I was completely sober the whole time" with a wink at a press conference to laughs. That would be pretty weak and lame and Rex would never even stoop that low.

i think this is getting blown out of proportion a bit.

While namath should know better bc of the way the NY media runs with stupid things like this, its not really that big a deal.

and besides, we know rex isnt exactly thin in a traditional sense

Namath is the greatest Jets player ever. He can say whatever he wants, he can bang my wife or daughter, he can even open up Auschwitz for business and I would still love him with all my heart..........<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

Taken in the concept that he's been taking shots at the team the whole season, what else would Namath think would happen.
I don't personally care, but if Joe's going to stoop to fat jokes, why not just keep it behind closed doors? If anything, this isn't the worst thing in the world, this team seems to thrive on the off-the-field stuff.
This is just juvenile. As other posters have pointed out, Namath has a lot of skeletons in his closet. As the old saying goes, "Those in glass houses...."

This could be misconstrued a bit. Its be depicted as a shot at Rex but it could have also been a light hearted joke. Rex makes fun of his own weight and it really is a pretty innocent joke. Still he should know better, NY media and all.

That really would be the same thing as Rex saying, "Oh, you know how Joe can get at times...." and then look out at the media during a press conference and then lift his hand up to his mouth to simulate him drinking a glass or a bottle, kind of like David Spade in "Tommy Boy."

I think he probably meant it as a joke but it hurts him that he's been critical of Rex Ryan and has questioned him belonging as the Jets coach so he really sets himself up to look bad.

Just not wise. The guy is almost 70 years old, why not take the Westoff side of things and use something clever and witty? He should just be taking it easy at this point and add his insight when asked to.

This is ridiculous, and it reeks of Cimini stirring shit up.

So in your opinion, Rex "losing" 2 AFC Championship games is more significant that Namath leading the Jets to their only Super Bowl title?

Oh no, Namath made a fat joke about Ryan! Wah, Wah Wah! Newsflash - everyone makes fat jokes about Rex Ryan, including Rex Ryan. And, not for nothing, Ryan would have to stand on his mother's shoulders to kiss Joe Namath's ass, despite what all you wet behind the ears 2 year fans think. So lay off Joe Willie.

Our opinion is you should go back to JI and troll there. Oh that's right you were banned there for trolling, which is why you are infesting our board with your same tired nonsense.

    Talk football or go away.

i disagree. he did make it personal.

you dont like how he coaches? fine, keep the criticism to the on the field product and his preparation (which he knows nothing about).

criticize how you think hes all talk and maybe players become complacent believing everything he says. or how they feel they have free reign to conduct themselves in a "non businesslike" manner.

but the fat jokes should be for casual observers or people currently in the league

not from the guy whos gotten fellatio at every turn for 4 decades from this organization.

he sounds like a bitter middle school girl who got passed up for the dance. because the closer Rex gets to a ring the less relevant Namath becomes when people discuss the Jets.

his legacy should never be questioned but as the talk becomes more about what this CURRENT Jets team is doing and trying to accomplish and less about us hanging on to glory days, someone as attention craved as Namath cant fill his appetite for spotlight.

so now hes making sly remarks to keep it going back and forth

i love and respect the guy but hes a caricature at this point scratching and clawing for relevancy.

of course if Rex ever wins one he'll be sucking them off and doing his interviews on radio and tv.

The best Jet QB ever yea I could see that. Best ever no way. Just because he was QB of a superbowl team does not make him the best Jet ever. There are a handful of guys on the team now that are better at their position then Namath ever was at his. It takes more to win a superbowl then a QB.

Its different if you are part of the organization and a 70 year old who hasnt been relevant in football for 30 years. Rex should be held to a higher standard with keeping his talk football related.
