http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7160762/nfl-quarterback-power-rankings Just what we need, another QB thread. I know. But this is actually pretty objective and he ranks "my quarterback" above Freeman, Bradford, Flacco. Below Fitzy and Stafford. Decent read.
I feel like the Cam Newton hype is a bit premature. Similar things were being said about Sam Bradford last year. Look what happened in St. Louis. People keep saying: "...and he's only going to get better!" How in the fuck do they know that? This is an interesting article with a lot of laughs, but how can he bash Josh Freeman for regressing and Sam Bradford for not winning...but then rank a rookie that's started 7 games (winning only 2 of them) in the top ten?
Kidding me? Cam Newton looks like the real deal. He Honestly can be un-stopable with weapons around him
Maybe he feels Cam is that transcendental. I was impressed by Freeman last year, and still am to a large degree, but that schedule had something to do with his success (still impressive for a sophomore). Sanchez has improved his play each year though, which can't be said for Freeman so far. And this is with an offensive line that has ranged between disgusting and now finally looking to gel. Which brings me to... Bradford. Who knows? The kid doesn't stand a chance with that line and those receivers.
I've never been impressed by Josh Freeman. He doesn't have the ability to win games. I completely agree with Simmons on Bradford - there's a Sam Bradford every year and an Andrew Luck every ten years.
You're probably right on Freeman, but he doesn't have the best weapons either. Point taken on Luck. Do you know how Saffold and Jason Smith are doing? I don't. 23 sacks so far credited to their offensive line. You're probably correct again, Bradford is just another guy. But, I think a lot of what makes a good quarterback is having faith in his offensive line to give him time to make the progressions.
I can live with 15, but I'd bump Sanchez up to "Enigma". It's too early to pigeonhole him as a game manager.
I don't need more rankings from Pats fans at this point. Just wait till Tom Brady retires. Simmons will never do another QB Ranking in his life. We'll have the Punter Ranking instead, to acknowledge the fact that the Pats overworked punter is, well, punting a lot.
He has plenty of weapons. That's such a bullshit excuse that people are using for him. The Bucs have a very good offensive line, Blount is clearly a capable back (when healthy), and he has plenty of guys to throw to - Kellen Winslow Jr, Mike Williams, and Arrelious Benn aren't elite players, but they're good enough.
If Simmons wants a new metric for Sanchez's stats, how about winning % against the Pats in the playoffs?
.....packers in 09. like 4-5 games last season. extending plays, making 4th quarter comebacks. the guy was awesome last year he just looks like a completely different QB this year though. It's not just him. mike williams and legarrette blount haven't been anywhere near the level they were either. the whole offense has been pretty bad and sam bradford....sorry, that's crap. he shouldn't be ranked that low. have you actually watched rams games? The guy has no time to throw. he's gotten hit almost 2x as much as cutler. Look at the stats, it's not even close. his offensive line is a joke, he has even worse weapons than the bears. He's got a completely new system(and no offseason to learn it) with an OC that thinks every QB can be Tom Brady. his defense can't stop anybody because almost every starter is on IR. Bradford's year last year wasn't an anomaly. that team has been ravaged by injuries(on offense and defense) and poor offensive line play. I have sunday ticket and everytime i put on the rams game i feel absolutely horrible for him. He has no receivers that can get open and he literally has like 1.5 seconds to throw the ball everytime. it's painful to watch. I usually agree with you E, but you're all sorts of wrong in this thread when it comes to freeman, Newton and Bradford
and really, who cares what bill simmons says. he's more entertainment based than facts based. i find his writing style funny and enjoy his articles from a pure comedy standpoint but I don't put much stock into any of his analysis, especially when he openly admits he's a homer and holds grudges against teams he dislikes.
I think Sanchez's weapons are better and his line has been better for the most part until this year. Bottom line: I'm happy with Sanchez. We all should be. He still makes dumb mistakes but the only comparable guy that stays healthy, with about the same experience in terms of years starting that might win the argument is Matt Ryan. Matt Ryan has Roddy White, Michael Turner, Tony Gonzo though. That's a pretty nice repertoire.
This ranking isn't that bad, if it was blatantly biased I wouldn't have bothered posting. I posted it cause there have been a lot of comparisons lately with Sanchez and his counterparts, and to this Pats fan, he compares favorably to the majority of them.
You say that Freeman extends plays, but when you can't read a defense, you have to do that...he is a terrible decision maker and he struggles against "real" teams. Bradford hasn't done anything in this league. I don't care about his supporting cast. He's done absolutely nothing. Newton's started a total of seven games and you think he's a top ten quarterback? That's ridiculous. I didn't say he wasn't good. I said the hype is premature.
oh, i wasn't saying you shouldn't have posted this article. i'm just saying as far as people really putting stock into what he says
you can defend Sanchez when his line is horrible but Bradford somehow has to overcome it? And even without mangold, his line was much much worse. Bradford had a great rookie season throwing to a bunch of nobodies. He hasn't been able to replicate that success because of what i stated. No QB could excel in that situation. his body of work from last year proved that even with at least marginal talent, he could be a pretty good QB. I'm guessing you haven't watched any Rams games this year.
I read this Friday night and I really disagree with where Homo and Eli were ranked. Too high. Stafford and Ryan are too low, IMO. Right after putting Eli on 'star' level, he points out that he can't be trusted!
