AT 6-4/350, I'm wondering if Ellis can play "bigger". That probably could be translated into "meaner". I didn't know the kid was that big as he just doesn't project the "presence" in the middle that Jenx did. Another widebody in the middle sure as hell couldn't hurt.
the reason Jenks had that presence, was his impressive technique. He played with a very low pad level, and he was the strongest Mo-Fo on the field. Kenrick right now, is just the biggest, and hardest to move guy out there. He needs to develop NFL strength, preferably elite strength like Jenks had. But more importantly than anything, he has to drastically improve his technique, and play with a very low pad level consistently. Once he gets that down, the kid has that rare athletic talent, much like Jenkins did. Lets just hope Ellis has sturdier knees.
Ellis has played exactly 5 quarters in his NFL career. Not to mention he has been in a rotation so he has not played every down, if many at all. Now if someone can extrapolate what his play is or is not going to be a season or 2 down the road you have a pretty damn good football eye. He has an excellent motor for an NT, he is not a lazy POS that needs a sandwich on the sideline ala Sam Adams. He just needs to learn leverage and technique. Comparing him to Kris Jenkins is kind of pointless, when Kris was on the field, healthy, was a top 2-3 D lineman in the entire NFL not just a top NT. Let Ellis develop first...............
If you are talking about what I said, I didnt mean to make a comparison to Jenkins. if I did, thats accidental. I think Ellis has that same rare athleticism that Big Jenks had. What he doesnt have that Jenkins had is the exceptional technique, the low pad level, the fact that he was the strongest man on the field. If Ellis can gain all of that, I see no reason he can't be every bit as dominant as a healthy Jenkins. Of course, if Mark Sanchez suddenly won 3 straight superbowls, we could say he is the best QB ever. Or maybe if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle. Nothing to do with Ellis but be excited about his potential, and hope for the best.
He wears the weight a lot more athletically than Jenks ever did, that's why he moves laterally so well. However, if he wants to have that same presence, it'll take time. He's a raw rookie, he's not going to immediately walk on the field with that kind of demand and attention from the opposing OLs. I think with time, he'll have a real presence on the line. But I think that'll happen some time next season. His best asset right now is being very quick of the snap, and he's shown some headiness for a young guy.
I don;t think meaner is what your looking for here. nyjetsrule hit on it, it was his technique. For a big guy Jenks had a great first step and great hands. He was able to controll and shed blockers almost at will when he was motivated. Ellis has the quickness off the snap and it will take time to get the rest of it down. He has the raw physical tools, its jsut refining them.
I wasn't singling out anyone actually. I saw Kris Jenkins mentioned and just said slow down killer. Trust me if I saw something you said out of line I would let you know......lol To be honest at this point I don't see a Kris Jenkins type player. Ellis can take on double teams for sure, he also hustles sideline to sideline which is more than a slob like Cody can do. He doesn't have that throw to the C to the side power Jenkins had yet. He also hasn't shown the added bonus of pass rush ability that Jenkins displayed. A rare ability in a 3-4 NT or any 3-4 lineman to be fair. Again, we are talking 20-30 snaps into what we all hope is a long promising NFL career. That is like picking a grain of sand up from the beach and trying to tell me what the beach looks like............... **Sent from phone will edit my nonsense later**
Drafting wideouts is a risky business in the first round. Burress might well come back and Kerley (to relate to your argument about K Ellis) is further along than Ellis in showing he can contribute. I thought the safeties played well this past week, and with Wilson I am happy to say showing real progress, the talent at cb makes having good cover safeties less compelling. I fear as the season progresses we will see more evidence that Moore is over the hill and needs to be replaced. And Slauson merely being "OK" does not inspire confidence. VD sucks, and we have no idea how Turner will be after a whole year on IR. Putting aside the apparently wasted pick on VD, the FO has not spent much in the draft on OL of late. The time has come. Back to the DL - I like Pouha, but the Jets need to consider the fact that he's not great and probably will not be the medium term answer at NT. K Ellis is a question mark. It sure would be great if he developed into starter quality as this season progresses. But you make a good point, at leats implicitly - the needs for help in the upcoming off season will to a large extent depend on what happens the rest of this season, at least where you have a couple of younger players who have yet to show how much they can develop on the same unit (as the Jets have in Wilkerson and K Ellis). Yeah, let's reserve judgment for the time being.
Pairing Revis in the secondary with a D. Ware type on the D-Line is an experiment that needs to happen sometime before Revis retires. I can't even fathom how dominant that defense would be.
Ellis needs to get his pad level lower. It was the 1st thing I noticed way back in the off season. He's just as powerful,if not more, than 90% of the OL in the league. He just gets stood up sometimes because of poor technique. When he gets low, he's a monster though. I was actually more impressed with him than Mo in the pre-season honestly. I htink both will be pretty good for years to come. We need a pass rusher now to help them out.
If Devito can come back healthy it will help our D-Line a lot. He's a great run stopper. I think that we've got very good depth on the line right now, we just lack a standout player. Pouha's the closest, but he's not an elite talent (not to take anything away from him--he's a very good player.) Hopefully Wilkerson or Ellis can develop into that guy. I think that finding a real edge rusher at OLB should be our #1 priority in the draft, not the d-line.
