i dont know about u folks but IMO the D line is something we really can look forward to for significant improvement and dare i say it, dominance, going forward.

the infusion of youth, continued development of guys like devito, dixon, and pituita?, and "veteran" play from pouha sets the stage for a nice rotation of talent at any point in the game.

barring any contractual issues, these guys will be the muster of the D for a few years giving the jets all sorts of flexibility in disguising fronts and blitzes.

it may actually force ryan to use more 4 and 5 man fronts to take some heat off of the LB's.

    thoughts??

Really hard to say this considering we have seen very little of Ellis so far.

Considering Pouha's age, if Ellis isnt dominant then neither will our Dline

What does Sione Pouha's age have to do with Ellis' performance?

Pouha and Ellis will be playing on the same line for most of this season.

It looks like the coaching staff is using Ellis and Tevaseu in short yardage situations.

    Something like this: Ellis-Pouha-Tevaseu

Mike DeVito will be back after the bye, so we'll probably see Ellis line up at end and tackle.

It is starting to come together, but I feel it can be even better. DeVito can be upgraded, but other than that, I'm loving what the young players have shown in their time on the field. Would be nice to get a project nose tackle in the draft, because I see Ellis taking DeVito's spot in the next few seasons.

I love DeVito for his attitude and effort, but the guy is not loaded with talent. I would also love to see him in the Pro Bowl, but what reason is there to really think he's got a lot of improvement in him? He's a solid role player and not much more.

Wilkerson is the guy, given his being a rook, who obviously has the potential to show real improvement. Imo he's been inconsistent so far, but that's to be expected. I would like to see him seal the edge better on run plays.

DeVito is probably our best run stuffer. He is not a pass rusher, which is why he comes out on 3rd downs. What do some of you expect from him? How much is he supposed to improve? He's already VERY GOOD at what he does. He'll be a reliable part of our line for the next few years.

Ellis is being groomed to take over for Pouha, who is getting up there in years and is a free agent after this season (I think this season, maybe next?). Provided he's healthy, he will get more and more time this year on the field with Pouha and DeVito and be part of the rotation.

The key obviously, for the future and even for this year, is going to be Wilkerson. He's the guy who can play every down and provide a little bit of a rush from the line. Everyone else in our rotation is basically a specialist player, who is here to stop the run (Pouha, DeVito, Ellis, Tevaseu) or rush the passer (Dixon, Pitoitua although he is in to stop the run as well)

I'd be happy if during this upcoming draft, the Jets go with a true widebody NT to go along with Wilkerson and Ellis if they're gonna stay with the hybrid 3/4 or 4/3. When Jenkins was healthy, he would tie up several guys while our LB's had free run at times and hardly anyone ever ran on us for any significant yardage regularly.

Ideally, yeah. Keep in mind a healthy Jenkins was one of the top 3 NT's in football. Someone like him isn't a lock in years of drafts

NT and help on the OL are probably the things most in need of attention this coming off season, but the off season is still a ways off.

Kenrick Ellis is 6-4, 350.. I don't know how much more of a "true NT" you can get than that.

As you say, Pouha is a UFA after this season - he is in the final year of his contract and getting a back loaded $2.5m this season.

Not sure what he would cost to sign to another, say, 4 year deal.

Pouha is going to be a 33 year old Nose Tackle. He's not getting a 4 year deal here or anywhere else.

I could see the Jets extending him at like 2 years for 5-6 million, though.

Pouha was a beast Sunday. Gotta resign him for at least 3 more yrs. To me, he's in his prime and DL are rotated in this system anyway, so depth is always important.

I dont really see why NT is one of the two biggest needs- we drafter Ellis in the 3rd round last year, no? He couldve been a 2nd rounder if it wasnt for his "character" issues (which is bs) and his lawsuit. Why would we draft another one?

If we resign Pouha, I would think it would be only for 1-2 years. We eventually want our 350 true NT to replaces him in Ellis. That was the logic behind the draft pick.

OL is a need, but right now they are playing pretty well. Slauson is O.K. but probably wont ever be a top player, Moore is getting older so we could draft a guard, and Hunter played like shit at first but has now played pretty well as of the last two weeks- he shut down Wake and only gave up a few plays to Phillips.

I would say a glaring needs this offseason would be more along the lines of a WR- big, tall and fast. We will only have Tone and Kerley so it is key to draft one high. Safety(s) are a huge need too because it is evident ours cant cover for shit. We might look to FA for this tho... And we still need a OLB who can stop the run and rush the passer, which yes, is hard to find.

He may well get a 4 year deal (or at least a 3yr deal) he came into the league late and was only drafted in 2005 and so does not have a 33yr olds wear and tear on him.

Ellis will be Rex's version of Ngata who is athletic enough to go off the edge and have a guy like Cody clogging the middle. We can find a young guy in the draft extend Pouha and develop the kid into the Cody type NT with Ellis and Wilkerson coming off the edge and stopping the run

Pouha will for sure be resigned. Guy is up there in age but has not played that much football so its a little different. Hes a great run stuffer and he stays healthy which is important for our D line. Wilkerson needs to step up his play a bit imo. Hes very inconsistent which is to be expected but if we are talking about our D line becoming great in the future we need to see improvement out of him and of course Ellis who has barely seen the field.

What is the difference between a tackle and an end in the 3-4. I've seen a lot of people saying to put Wilk - Pouha - Ellis but isn't there only supposed to be 1 tackle ?

Agreed, lets stack this line, or draft a superb safety.

Imagine if we could get someone like Ed Reed in the backfield. Our secondary would be unstoppable. Of course great safeties are hard to find.

Also unlike last year, we are getting a pretty decent amount of help from our recent draft picks...Kyle Wilson, Joe McKnight, Wilkerson, Kerley, Ellis and even Greg McClroy looked alrite as a backup in the preseason.

You and I have been ringing that bell for too long jil. The DL has never been a strength, except with Big Jenks was healthy. I think we have to go O with our first pick this year though.
