Those were the 2 obvious ones, let's not forget Joe Lefeged. I'm really baffled that the Jet's staff didn't pursue him and get him signed. The Colts have a good player in the future, he is a demon on ST. Jeron Johnson should have been drafted. Deunta Williams is still not in the NFL, once predicted to be a possible 1st rd player. That broken leg really hurt his career. McDaniel is a head case , threw his girlfirend down the stairs and is very immature. Many NFL teams aren't valuing the Safety position.
I'll confirm that you are correct. IMO we need to draft a safety somewhere --- its a position we have virtually ignored since Sherry Rhodes was drafted in the 4th round back in 2005 and Eric Smith in 2006. Fine - the class is weak, but midrounder is appropriate. I just usually post in the draft forum so I keep my viewpoints with respect to position being addressed in the draft. If it happens in FA, fine. I just can't see another draft going by without selecting a safety.
I would of brought up Lefeged but when he said undrafted and unsigned I instantlu thought of those two. Lefeged is a very good tackler and is decent in coverage, he has impressed me thus far for the Colts. I am just as surprised as you are that the Jets didn't sign him but I guess they thought they had plenty of safties at the time when having Pool, Smith, Jimmy, Lowery, and Cook. He should of at least been workedout but I guess the Colts offered him more of a starting role. Johnson should of been drafted I'm surpised so many teams skipped on him. I totally forgot about him after the draft though.
Did the Jets even bring in Goldson this offseason? He was available, but I don't remember seeing them ever connected to each other. The Eraser has looked better on the Bengals then he did on Jax, and it sounds like Cincinnati is gonna throw some money his way at the end of the season...
New England brought him in just before he re-signed with San Francisco. My memory is a little cloudy, but I can't recall the Jets bringing in any free agent safeties last offseason. Ryan seemed satisfied with Leonhard and Smith. Pool was re-signed pretty late.
Well if the Draft is weak to you scouts(lol) What are the Notable Safety FA's this upcoming offseason? Discuss! LaRon Landry ( Complete Safety ) Brandon Meriweather( Like Eric Smith but has potential to be coached up )
Ya only Laron seems reasonable. Even that isnt what we need right now. Id'd like to see pool step it up
Free Safeties don't tend to match up with the TE. LBs and SSs usually draw the TE in man-to-man coverage. That said, Eric Smith and any of our linebackers need help in coverage against elite TEs, but outside of Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Troy Polumalu and Brian Urlacher, so doesn't the rest of the leagues LBs and SSs. That is why they are elite. This year, Pettine has been using CBs to man receiving TEs in many passing situations and it is working decently. If you expect us to blank TEs week in and week out, then you are out of your mind. Here is this season's stats: Week Name Rec-Yds-TDs 1 Witten 6-110-0 2 Miller 3-28-0 (Lewis was Out) 3 Boss 2-36-0 4 Dickson 4-45-0 5 Hernandez 5-56-0 5 Gronkowski 4-31-0 6 Fasano 1-13-0 7 Gates 5-56-1 7 McMichael 3-45-0 Gates TD was the first we allowed to a TE. Witten was the only one with more than 5 catches and more than 100 yards, but 64 of it came when Eric Smith was in man on him with no help and it was the first game of the year. Also, Gates and Witten are the best TEs in the league. I'd say our TE coverage is much improved from last season, because we are not allowing Smith to get isolated downfield against TEs when we blitz, restricting our opponents ability to make big plays to the TEs.
Thats really not high praise though  Landry, if he could stay healthy, would not sniff FA status i'd like to think.
I thought these two would be the first to go after Moore. IMO, we have no chance of getting the kind of safety we want in the draft. We may get a guy who can give us a hell of a special teams contribution and eventually develop into a starter, but that's not what we're looking for; that's what we already have. I'm all for taking a shot on a DB on day 3, but there are bigger fish to fry in the early rounds.
In Free Agency with Leonard being a FA we could bid for someone else next year like Abram Elam Goldson on the 49ers Merriweather
Tyvon Branch is actually worst than E. Smith in coverage. MIchael Huff would've been the Oakland safety to target this past off season but even he was grossly overpaid.
So is Deunta Williams going to re-enter the draft or will he be a free agent? I remember I read somewhere that he wanted to have a year to get back to full health so then he could show teams what he's really capable of... wouldn't mind picking him up... especially if no draft pick is needed
Any opinions on Janzen Jackson? He's from McNeese State, but he originally went to Tennessee and was highly touted. He'll probably go anywhere from the 2nd to the 4th if he comes out. Very talented but obviously has character concerns...never stopped Rex or Tanny.
