Obviously one of the Jets weaknesses is the S position. We had good strong safeties but covering a TE is a big weakness. Are there any good players in this draft that can fit the role of a playmaking safety that can cover?
IMO the Jets are better off signing a FA safety than drafting one early but a guy that I could see the Jets drafting later on who would be a nice addition in the 3rd or 4th round would be Winston Guy Jr out of Kentucky. He's got solid size in 6'2 215, can cover TEs well, has a great ball skills, and has looked impressive thus far in his senior season. If the Jets can get him in the mid rounds Id be very pleased.
I'm don't think that they think it's a weakness Rex loves Eric smith who is a hard hitter but can't cover a paper bag. Rex loves Jim Leonard (and I do too), but he is too short to be effective in coverage Brodney pool is a good mix of a hard hitter with decent size but. Nothing special in coverage either On a different note Dwight Lowery is looking good lol
Our corners are so good they make up for bad safety play the thing is TE are our Achilles heal. We need a great cover guy and a ball hawk back there we have neither. Eric Smith is a small ILB. Leonard is a great signal caller but is the same size as Danny Woodhead. I'm hope we trade up for Robert Lester in the draft(he should go in the middle of the 2nd) and go for a SS like Tyvon Branch who isnt great in man coverage but with our coaching will get better. Oakland has put itself in a bad situation cap wise with the trade for Palmer and wont over pay for Branch when they draft a new safety in the draft best thing about Branch is that he is a great tackler which we needs as we allow too many broken tackles. Have Branch work with Rex and Pettine all summer and have him start from day 1 next season Branch will become better in man coverage and he's already great in zone coverage Lester will develop into a great ball hawk playing behind the 3 headed monster
2012's safety class will be weak. It may be in this team's best interest to upgrade through free agency. Wideout, offensive line, and linebacker should be addressed in the draft.
^ I don't think a Safety will be taken in Round 1 and maybe not until at least the middle of Rd 2. Some have McDonald rated high, I think he's a bit overrated.
I agree on both points. A desperate team may go after a safety at the backend of the first, but it's looking like we won't see one drafted until the second round. I don't really see a safety that will shoot up boards because of an amazing combine either. It's just a weak class. The tight end class is also weak. These could be bad things for the Jets, because we may see a ton of a receivers come off the board early.
The game is evolving, with the passing game becoming dominant. Schools are putting their best athletes at CB and WR. TEs & Safeties aren't the best athletes on most teams and generally aren't huge playmakers. There are some exceptions (Berry), but in general you don't see as many quality players at both positions as you did 10 years ago. Just my .02!!!
Certainly, but not someone you draft at the top few rounds of this draft. I believe the OP's question can't be answered until you get players in training camp and see how they fit in your system. Free Agency might be the Jet's best option. Someone else pointed this out and is probably right..."The Jets could be happy with their current Safeties".
Agreed. Floyd/Burfict/Upshaw/Jenkins should be the targets for the Jets in the first round. Those are the three position that need long-term help the most.

Trumaine Johnson, the kid from Montana, may see his stock drop due to a recent arrest. I still cannot put safety above the other 3 positions of need event though I want to cause I really do not like Eric Smith back there. I still go OLB in the first, OL in the second (Wagner?), hope someone like Toon is there in the third, then see what is available at the safety position. The only spot I could potentially see moving it over is OL if Ducasse develops with an actual offseason and Turner comes back at 100% and even then, I still may go OL in the 2nd. I think Plax is likely gone after this year and the Jets need another WR anyway even if he stays.
I don't feel like going back and checking for names now, but weren't there a few safties in this past draft that folks were high on, but they neither gor drafted nor signed (because of the lack of off-season)? What do you think will happen with those guys?
Because of the Patriots and their Ungodly TE's we will def need to Upgrade the Safety position Somehow Someway but ya they truly control our roster moves I believe
We won't be able to upgrade the safety position in this draft. The safety class is weak. wewantsapp seems to think that mid-rounders like Delano Howell will be upgrades over Jimmy Leonhard and Eric Smith. That's not necessarily true. Free agency is the way to go here because of the weak talent at the position in this year's draft class. Reggie Nelson, Michael Griffin, and Dashon Goldson are some players to keep an eye on.
I believe you are talking about Deunta Williams and DeAndre McDaniel both of which went undrafted due too injury. McDaniel has signed with the Saints and Colts thus far but was waived twice, I'm not sure if that was due too injury or lack of skills but it seems as tho teams havent loved what they've seen thus far. Deunta has taken the year off I believe too recover from his leg injury. He could be someone too look at next year but I doubt he starts.
