vlad is hot garbage in pass protection but the jets got good yardage when they lined him up as a TE, not a bad idea in obvious run situations
Don't know if this is really contributing to the lack of push, but how about we let the play clock always run down to nearly zero, so the DL can cheat on the snap?
That tendency cropped up again during the Dolphins game - and I have had a lot of gripe about that too. By the time Sanchez breaks the huddle, the clock is below 10 second mark, meaning Schottenheimer again is sitting on his ass instead of giving out plays as soon as possible.
its ridiculous. there's no need to even listen to the snap count if you're playing D against us... just watch the damn play clock. 99% of snaps are with less than 2 seconds on the clock. Alio has been mentioning this too. its crazy annoying. the worst part is, the rare occasions he breaks the huddle with some margin of time, that's when all the pre-snap dancing bullshit starts. so frustrating.
The Coaches Show on NFLN with Billick and Mora were talking about this topic last week, and they were discussing how poor the Jets o-line was playing, and they said they took the time to look at the coaches film from the Jets games this season, and both agreed that Brandon Moore is actually one of their greatest causes for concern on the o-line now. They were showing film, and they were talking about how some things were being "blamed" on Hunter, that coaches know, when they look at the tape, were more due to error(s) on Moore's part. They said and even worse, while showing examples, some of Moore's errors had been "physical" which is one thing, they can correct a "physical" error by working on technique, or making sure he's fully rehabbed, etc. They said, what was alarming, was that Moore was making serious "mental" errors, too. They said "mentals" can lead to Mark getting seriously hurt. They showed four plays, and they said Brandon's "physical and mental" mistakes resulted in the breakdown of all of them. They said the right side of our line is a liability, given him and Hunter playing like they are, although they said they thought Hunter was progressing and not necessarily the root of as many problems as people were crediting. Have you guys noticed that about Moore, too? Is that accurate? I'm not particularly good at assessing the o-line play, other than... They damn near got Mark killed three weeks straight, then played a hot mess the next week, and then... Yeah.
Well lined up on the right side you've got Moore, Hunter and Keller. That's not exactly a stellar blocking configuration in the first place and if Moore is starting to lose it it's a downright bad one. This really all comes back to Ducasse. When you spend a 2nd round pick on a player at a key position and miss it really screws everything else up. When you've only spent one high pick on an offensive lineman over five seasons and miss you're going to have problems on the line eventually and the Jets are there now. It also comes back to Hunter. The guy is a replacement level player who was good in the extra packages. He had one string of decent play late last season, which wasn't really good, just decent, and the Jets somehow double-visioned him into starting material. This despite the fact that he had already been in the NFL for 6 years before that with no suggestion that he was a starting caliber player. You can't fantasize somebody into a stud right tackle.
There was one play that I think really was really obvious in our o-line being dominated (not that every play isn't), but one in particular just stuck in my mind. I forget what point of the game it was in against the dolphins, but it was towards the end when they were running to run the clock. They did an outside handoff to Greene to the right, and he was hit almost immediately after touching the ball and when he was being brought down, there was literally 5 dolphins surrounding him. That play could have been a result of a mix up of the play calls...well, at least I'd like to think it was. They made a huuuge mistake trusting this o-line this offseason. And ESPN is extremely annoying, as on their front page for NFL after the trading deadline they were preaching that the Jets were trading deadline losers because they didnt trade for a RB... ....what??? How would that help the situation? So they would be gobbled up at the point of attack?
And another note: that crap was plaguing Jets last season, but as for this season, I've seen this happen during Dolphins game, and that's about it. In other games - especially those that Jets lost, i.e. Baltimore, New England etc - Sanchez had ample time to deal with every stuff, and yet the line still failed to generate enough push at the point of attack. Defense cheating may well be one of the reasons, but the OL is just not doing the job adequately at all.
Off-tackle to the left side without blocking help is always a miserable failure. That one is on Schottenheimer, not the OL.
Yeah, is it just me or should Conner be in there every play?? I mean, when you know you have a deficiency on the o-line, you gotta correct for it. I know you lose a skill player that way, but they need to have that guy for the push.
Daryl Johnstone would beg to differ. Capable lead blocker that can blow up a gaping hole for a running lane IS a skill player. (TRich was just that - the Greene run clip above is actually one of the best example for that.)
I truley think this has to do with the lack of OTA's. I know it's seven weeks into the season but they can only practice in pads 18 times a season. That's two weeks with pads and the rest with one practice. This is opposed to the possibility of three practices a week. Mon; Off, Tues; Pads, Wed; Pads, Thurs; Pads, Fri; No Pads, Sat; Travel or walk though. Sanchez is still young, he's only 24 and still need lots of practice. As well as our O Line is getting younger so they need the practice.
I know. I mean, what happened to this guy? They were talking like he was going to be a pro bowler someday, the next Tony Richardson. We barely see him on the field on run plays. The OL may be damned, but this is the product of Schottenheimer and his lousy play calling, if you ask me.
Say Ground and pound all you want. This offense doesn't even utilize a very good blocking FB prospect that is already on the roster. Ground and pound? My fucking ass.
Agree. In addition, the defense almost always has 8 in the box on first and second down. The Jets typically run a 3WR 1 RB or 2WR 1TE and 1 RB set on first down and which means we have 5 or 6 (including Keller) blocking 8 and that results in no holes and no push. The problem is play calling. The Jets remain a team that runs almost 70% of the time on first down. You can't run with 5 blocking 8. Schotty needs to go. Sanchez numbers are mainly as a result of him throwing most of his passes on obvious passing downs - 3rd and long. Schotty even makes 3rd and short hard on the QB and the passing. Did you notice that how, on every 3rd and short (2 or 3 to go), the Jets line up in a shotgun? Why? Why not keep the defense guessing as to whether the play is a pass or run? Instead, our "ground and pound" offense becomes dink and dunk with slants and quick outs on 3rd down every time. It is so easy to defend it is a joke. Why not put Conner and Green in the game with 2WR and Keller and put Sanchez under center and open the entire play book? And call a run on 3rd and 2 for a change.
Seems like a miscalculation to me. 3 WRs equate to 11 personnel (1 RB/1 TE) and 2 WRs are either 21 or 12 (2RB/1TE or 1RB/2TE) Since Jets rarely employ FB on 1st down, it's either 11 or 12 personnel setup - either of which is not an ideal running set against 8 men front. Having a FB in the pitch gives you the versatility to go either way - preferably to the strong side - with additional blocker. I agree with this sentiment whole-heartedly; 3rd and long is but an artifact of failed 1st and 2nd downs, and Jets are miserable on them, especially 1st down.
