It might be tied with the double reverse we ran against the Broncos on a frozen, slippery field, while having a mix of rain and sleet.
This play was just metaphorical for me. It represents just how inept he is at playcalling. We used to rip on Hackett for being too Vanilla, and he was - which was in some ways equally maddening. But sometimes it seems like SCHOTT is playing real life Madden. It's almost like he's goofing off or something ... maybe he just doesn't take his job seriously? I don't know.
He's got the typical father-son thing going with Marty. He needs to be visible and unpredictable and flashy at times just because his dad was the opposite as a coach.
Frt while I thought that dopey HB pass play was exactly that, it is not fair to base an assessment of the overall body of any OC's work on a single play call. No matter how bad.
Agreed, but in Schotty's case, he's made calls like that throughout his tenure with the Jets. That's what people are failing to understand, this isn't an isolated incident. It's not like "Oh well, he called a bad game today". His tendencies have been consistent for the last few seasons. He doesn't tailor his gameplan to the opposing defense, he calls the same bullshit. The rest of the league has finally caught up to him.
And yet.... How is it that the Jets do better in the last three quarters with Schotty still as their OC than in the first? I think this is a question the Schotty Haters have to confront and provide a reasonable answer to. The facts are clear - in the first quarter so far this year, actually going back well into last year's regular season schedule, and of course for the Champ Game against Pitt well into the whole first half, the O has been the worst performing O in the league. Is it Schotty scripting bad plays in the first quarter? Coming up with better play calls later? WHat's the explanation? Before you answer that, you might want to hear what Ryan is quoted in the Wall Street Journal today as saying on the subject: "Whatever the case may be, Ryan is looking for anything to shake things up and get his team off to a faster start. "I think I'm just gonna start telling our guys, 'It's the second quarter,' when we're running out of the tunnel," he joked. "The first quarter has certainly been a challenge for us, but I don't know why. It kind of blows me away. It's the same plays and same everything else. We just execute much better when the game gets going." http://online.wsj.com/article/SB100...564276600434.html?mod=WSJ_NY_LEFTForthStories So, Ryan thinks the problem is execution. Not the play calling. I've been telling you guys all along your real problem is with Ryan, not Schotty. You just don't want to accept that.
I think most of us are fairly rational and don't dispute that execution is a problem, along with Schotty. But do you wanna fire the entire Offense? Improper execution gets magnified by an incompetent O.C.
One problem with Schottys offense seems to be that he tries to call unorthodox plays to spark the offense, instead of methodically moving the ball down field, with a run favored attack. His plan is fine as long as the play call works, if it doesnt we are screwed.
That's been my question. Schotty's tenure has always had slow starts to the offense. 6 years and he's unable to get his players playing consistent for an entire game. Why can't it get fixed? Granted the WRs have to start catching the football, and Sanchez does leave completions out there. But its this attitude they seem to bring onto the field, and its been there for years with different QBs. That's on Schotty, and its the most glaring issue of them all.
While I see your side of it and maybe you have a point, the problem that I have with your assessment is that the only CONSTANT with the Jets offense is BS, we have transitioned in WR, TE, Oline, RB, FB, and QB, to say Rex is the problem is one sided, if Rex had been here the same amount of time, I would side with you in a heartbeat. We have changed everything on the offensive side of the ball except one thing.
Bingo. Lots of said this last year too. Who has been the common-denominator for the past half-decade?
I don't disagree, and in fact said pretty much the same thing earlier today on this thread. I just want to make clear the issue is not one of too conservative or alternatively too cute play calling. I don't really think it's an issue of playcalling at all. But yeah, Schotty and the rest of the CS and the FO as well for that matter all bear some responsibility for poor execution. Is that everybody? Oh wait! Might as well throw in the players themselves as well.
We are talking about two different things. The Ryan part I am talking about is why Schotty is as of today still hte OC for this team despite all the complaints from the Schotty Haters. The answer is Ryan does not agree with the Schotty Haters.
Teams dont operate on fan opinion. By your logic, every time a player made an error they'd be cut or replaced.
Not to be too philosophical, because after all I can afford to be, being indifferent to whether Schotty leaves or stays (as long as he is not replaced by someone worse). But I imagine it is something that is either better off ignored or will cause too much discomfort, trying to all at the same time Hate Schotty and want him gone Think his departure will improve the team Admire Ryan as the HC, and think of one's self as a Ryan fan, and Acknowledge the main reason Schotty is still here is because Ryan does not want him to leave. Wow, that must be tough. Something eventually will have to give. In the meantime I can feel lucky I can afford to be philosophical.
Wow, you completely understand the conversation here. NO ONE is saying Schotty should go because he has too many fans who hate him. The question is why is he still the OC DESPITE what limitations and shortcomings his haters see in him.
Big, if BS is here because Rex likes him then it shows that he has a lot to learn about being a HC, but we have one thing Rex does not and that is 3 extra years of a below average OC. 2 of Rexs 3 years with the Jets he has made the AFCCG so in Rex's mind he has an OC that is capable, but we have seen what it was like three years before Rex came here, the question is.... How long before Rex realizes that it is his defense and ST that have carried his team to the AFCCG and not the offense, 2-3 years? If that is the case this thread will be 1000 pages long.
Ftr I am in agreement with the Schotty Haters who have a beef with the poor execution and lack of development in some key players on the O. I think on THAT issue, to be fair to Ryan, mid-season is no time to act on that shortcoming by firing the OC, so Ryan may well feel the best option open to him through the rest of the season is to make the most of what he has, keep Schotty for now, and suck it up. But for those here who think it should be obvious that the problem instead is in lack of a better offensive scheme and of better playcalling, Ryan in my opinion clearly does not share that assessment. That doesn't mean Ryan has to be right and Schotty's critics wrong. But those here who otherwise admire Ryan I think have to come to grips with the divergence between Ryan's assessment and theirs.
