Your numbers are flawed. 1. You're not taking in to consideration the time the ball is in the air. 2. And you're not considering what a deep ball attempt does to the defense.....it spreads out their coverage and makes it easier to run the ball. 3. The Steelers have the fastest receiver in the NFL and best combination of QB/WR for long pass plays in the history of the NFL and we never made a single down field attempt in the Ravens game when we were down 10 points before leaving the hotel. Frankly, I think it's the right move. If you are veteran, making more than a million this year and you don't produce and then you start mouthing off about the coaches, and other players, then you should be cut. At least in this instance they got something down the road for him. Remember Tom Brady was a sixth round pick. You never know. Still, Mason was not the answer here. You know, if Mo Lewis had never taken Bledsoe out of that game in 2001, history might have gone in an entirely different direction.
I don't think any coach in the NFL at this early stage is packing it in. If the JETS can get back to being competitive, they will welcome that running game come November and December, provided thay can back to doing it consistently. Right now they need a balanced attack and as to whether or not, Sanchez, his remaining receivers and the offensive line can make that happen remains to be seen. It is possible but is it probable?

The above are exactly the problems with the Jets offense. Somebody either doesn't trust Sanchez or doesn't trust the deep passing game. As long as the Jets won't go deep, they are their own worse enemy. They can't score enough to beat even decent defenses -- and the Jets D isn't nearly good enough to regularly hold high scoring offenses to a just TD and a couple FGs. A team has be willing and able to throw deep regularly, even if, or maybe, especially, if they want to be a ground and pound offense.
All true...but Sanchez hasnt had time to throw a 5 yard slant let alone settle in the pocket and rip a 50 yarder. On some of the replays during the Pats game when the camera was set up behind Sanchez you could see he had opening down field but he just didnt have the time.
This is a fallacy that many fans get trapped in, you can throw a 35-40 yard deep ball one second after the ball is snapped. Snap.....one step back.....throw it up where you and your receiver know where it's going and hope that he can get there. On the right part of the field, in the right situation, the worst that can happen is an INT which in some cases is no different than a punt..... just one down sooner.
I think this is right. The Jets got Derrick Mason to help in a wide-open passing attack, the one they said they were going to run at the beginning of training camp. They didn't realize at the time that the offensive line would be so degraded this season that there was no way they could possibly run that wide-open scheme. So Mason is 37 and has no future value to them at all and he doesn't even have much present value because Mark Sanchez's back and the turf are becoming best buddies this season. So they traded him for what they could get. They have to look at Kerley and they probably want to look at turner and other younger receivers also so Mason's snaps were going to go away any way.
The Jets are getting goofy about covering up the mutiny for one reason only...they don't want to have to admit they traded a guy because he was too much for them to handle. They still want to have the rep of letting everyone come in and be themselves and not censoring anyone. Rex still wants to be known as the coach who's easy to play for and who'll take anyone in, yadda yadda yadda. Now why they hold Schotty in such reverence is a seperate issue IMO...that I can't guess the answer to. My only guess is they just have a blind spot for him and such respect for the family, plus Rex doesn't want to have to spend two seconds worrying about the offense.
The OP and Carton are right - why all the fuss? It almost seems that they are over sensitive about letting Cotchery and Smith go and signing Mason, and trying to avoid critizisim when Mason sucked. Throw in the SB boasts and the performance of the team so far, and it starts to look like a big batch of "cover your ass".
