Worked for a few hours on this one and I think I got alot of the teams needs in order, now some of you may not agree on the certain draft choices or team slot and thats okay because Im all for criticism. If you have any questions Id love to answer them. Thanks for the feedback! 1st Round 1) Indianapolis Colts - Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford I think the Luck sweepstakes goes to the Colts, they just look like they might not win over two games this year which means they should be there at #1. This franchise knows that in order to stay relevant after Manning is gone they will need a big time QB and as much as adding a WR like Blackmon or LT like Kalil may do for the Colts it work make as big of an impact as another dominating QB for the next 10 years. Luck can be in Indy for a long LONG time and would greatly benefit from learning under Manning for a few years. The Manning Era isn't over but this pick is what is truly best for the future of this franchise. 2) Miami Dolphins - Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma The Dolphins end up winning some games this year and lose out on Luck IMO, but Landry Jones isnt exactly a bad consolation prize. Miami needs a QB plain and simple and while they do take some consideration into drafting Blackmon or Richardson I think they know that they need to start off fresh with a young and potentially great QB in Jones. If they sign or trade for a QB (Palmer, Young, or Orton) knowing they want to maybe wait another year or two I could see them picking Blackmon over Jones (If they dont believe in him) and have an amazing WR Tandem of Marshall, Blackmon, Bess, and Hartline. 3) Minnesota Vikings - Matt Kalil, OT, USC The Vikings line is getting OLD and they need to insure that there future QB in Ponder is protected for the future. Kalil should be the top LT in the draft and should translate into a VERY solid Tackle in the NFL. Im sure Adrian Peterson would be pretty excited over this pick as well. 4) St Louis Rams- Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State Rams fans should be extremely excited Blackmon is a top prospect in this draft and the answer to their dismal receiving core. A combo of Blackmon and Bradford could be a nice 1 2 punch for years and years to come and IMO one of the better fits in this draft for Blackmon. 5) Seattle Seahawks – Matt Barkley, QB, USC Carroll loves his USC QBs and with Tavaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst proving further that they wont be franchise QBs, Barkley comes to the rescue to put some life into a lack luster offense. This would be a great situation for Matt having receivers like Sidney Rice, Mike Williams, Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin and TE Zach Miller to throw too which would really be a boost in the process of adjusting to the NFL. 6) Jacksonville Jaguars – Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina In order for Gabbert to improve further in the NFL he will need a big time #1 WR, Mike Thomas and Jason Hill dont fit that part so the Jags draft Jeffery to be their prize piece on Offense next too Gabbert and MJD. This could only improve Gabberts development. 7) Kansas City Chiefs – Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford The Chiefs need to sure up that line if they want to have a better offense next season when Charles returns and i dont think Brandon Albert is that great of a LT so at #7 I see them drafting Jonathan Martin to put over at the blindside. I think they can then move Albert to RT and have a very solid and young OLine. Martin is a very solid pass protector and run blocker. He would be the complete package at LT and an excellent pick. 8) Denver Broncos – Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama At first I wanted the Broncos to pick a CB here at #8 but with the infusion of a running offense with John Fox I think they look to upgrade at RB over Moreno, who I believe the franchise has given up on. The Broncos need a DT as well but I think Richardsons potential of being a great do everything back is way too hard to pass up on. Fox will be very please with a 1 2 punch of a powerful Richardson and a speedy and shifty Moreno. 9) Cleveland Browns – Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina The Browns defense is showing signs of some real life this season, Haden seems great, Taylor seems like an excellent DT, Sheard is surprising many, and there LB core as been better. I think they need to find a way to complete this D and add a whole new element too it and that is a dominating and monster of a pass rusher, and that is Coples. Coples falls a little bit because of his up and down season this year but there is just no doubting his talents. The Browns need another WR but Coples value is big and it adds a whole new dimension too their D. 10) Arizona Cardinals - Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa Levin Brown needs to be put on the other side of the line at RT which leads the Cards needing a new LT. Reiff would be an excellent addition to a young and improving offense. Kolb needs to stay protected to really earn that big contract and Reiff would provide that effectively. 11) Carolina Panthers – Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame Cam Newton is shocking the masses with his effective arm and solid decision making, him and Steve Smith have become one of the more exciting duos in the NFL. The only problem I see is that Smith will now be double maybe even tripled covered this year to force Newton to throw too his less reliable WRs. I think here is where they look for Floyd to cause even more problems for opposing D's. Floyd is an excellent and strong WR that Cam will instantly love too call his #2 and future #1. WR isnt necessarily a big need but the potential to improve Cams game even more is extremely hard for the Panthers to pass up. 12) Cincinnati Bengals- Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU The Bengals wanted Richardson badly to replace the most likely gone Benson for next season but the Broncos took him and it seems as though the better option is too go Corner. Claiborne is slowly becoming the top CB prospect in this draft, he has speed, is a sure tackler, excellent in coverage, and has solid return ability. The Bengals pass rush is good and LB core is good but they are missing Johnathan Joseph at Corner opposite Leon Hall. Claiborne would make this D a lot more challenging come game day. 13) Oakland Raiders- Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama The Raiders are kinda in the same situation that the Bengals are in they have a solid DLine and LB core as well as a good Corner in Routt but after him their Cornerbacks frankly suck. They need a solid cover corner that use to hit like Nnmadi and stand stout across from Routt. Kirkpatrick is an excellent physical corner that would sure up the Raiders D. They may need a QB or more OLine help but Dre's potential and value as tough to ever pass up on. Hue Jackson would be very very happy. 14) Washington Redskins – Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma The Redskins should be looking for a QB IMO but they wont because of Grossmans somewhat solid season thus far. Santana Moss is solid but they need too add another WR to really become a complete team. Broyles is a big time college WR and has great potential as an excellent #2 WR in the NFL opposite of Moss he should be great even in his rookie season. 15) Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska The Bucs are very close to drafting Burfict at #15 here but I think they wise up and realize that CB is just way too big of a need. With the possibilty of a Ronde retirement and Talib being one bad decision away from being out of the NFL corner becomes just more of a bigger need. Dennard is an excellent cover corner, alot like his old teammate Prince. He would be very solid for the Bucs luck luster passing D. 16) Cleveland Browns (From ATL) - Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State The Browns offense just went from good too GREAT. Burfict is a MONSTER and IMO the next great ILB in the NFL. He would add a whole new element to the Browns D and make opposing offenses frankly frightened. It would seem as though the Jones trade would of paid of excellently with the additions of Coples and Burfict out of this draft. Burfict would come in and either replace Fujita at OLB or move D'Well Jackson to the outside and Burfict come in and play MLB. Either way Browns fans should be ecstatic.
17) Philadelphia Eagles – Manti Teo, LB, Notre Dame The Eagles have realized that their LBs are less then average and they need help and improvement over players like Matthews, Fokou, and Chaney. Teo would be the answer to those prayers. Now If Burfict becomes available within a few picks from they I think they would trade up for him but for now in my draft they stay put and pick an excellent LB in Teo. He would sure up the run D and help solve there LB woes. 18) Buffalo Bills – Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State The Bills have much improved this season but I think they just miss the playoffs this season. Even with there improvements on D they still rank one of the bottom teams at sack totals in the NFL. So this is where I see them try to solve that with the addition of one of the best 3-4 OLBs in this draft. Jenkins and come in and rush right next to Dareus to get to the QB. Hed be an excellent added dimension too their vastly improving D. 19) Dallas Cowboys – Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia The Cowboys have ignored corner for too long and I honestly could see them trading up for one in this draft, but since I dont do trades this is who I would see them picking if they stay put. Minnifield's stock is rising and he is slowly but surely showing he is one of the better CBs in this draft. The Cowboys need to replace Newman and Minnifield can come in and improve their pass D effectively, Rob Ryan would be very happy. 20) Tennessee Titans – Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina Jason McCourty is a decent corner but the Titans need a better #2 alongside Finnegan. I think this Titans pick can go alot of ways, they could go DE and they could take a hard look at Sanu and Fuller to play alongside Britt but I think the breakout of Washington and solid season from Ball and Morgan leads them to want too improve at Corner. Gilmore's stock is high but I think it falls a bit because of his inconsistency this year at SC. He still will most likely blow up the combine and has excellent potential to be a better than average #2 CB. Playoff Teams 21) Pittsburgh Steelers – Andrew Datko, OT, Florida State The Steelers need OLine and more OLine. Starks is old and Scott has been on and off so they need to add a Tackle to play either LT or RT and protect Big Ben. I think they will make the playoffs but lose because of the inefficiency to stop the pass rush. Datko would be a nice addition and with time should become a great young tackle. 22) San Francisco 49ers - Jayron Hosley, CB, Virginia Tech Ginn might be gone next year and Tarell Brown isnt exactly a solid corner across from Carlos Rogers. The 49ers are a solid team and improving nicely but I think their passing D is still below average. They most likely have a tough time picking between, Crick, Worthy, or another corner like Cliff Harris but i think they go for Hosley who seems more likely to be a potential #1 CB and will provide return possibilities in his rookie season too replace the FA Ginn. 23) Houston Texans- Jeff Fuller, WR, Texas A&M Andre Johnson is getting older and the Texans still dont have a solid #2 too play along side him. Fuller would come in and start instantly at #2 WR and take some pressure off Johnson or maybe even benefit more with Johnson getting all the attention. This would be the best fit for Fuller. Period. 24) NY Giants – Zach Brown, LB, North Carolina The Giants need a LB badly and they have lacked a solid one for quite some time now. I think they have a tough time picking between Kuechly and Brown but ultimately go with the stand out Brown. Brown has shown on a stacked defense that he can stand out effectively using his excellent blitzing skills, solid zone play, and stout run stopping. He would be a fan favorite and starter early on. 25) New York Jets- Mohammed Sanu, WR, Rutgers And here's what you most likely scrolled too look at first, the Jets pick. So far the draft for the Jets hasnt looked so fantastic, many top OLB's, WR's, and OT's are gone and only a select few worthy of a first round selection remain. I think the Jets look long and Hard at prospects like Devin Taylor, Bruce Irvin, Donte Paige-Moss, Ricky Wagner but Ultimately see that WR is vastly the bigger need with Plax and Mason gone. Sanu's stock shoudl boom come draft time, I could see him maybe even being picked over Fuller but I think the back end of the first is a nice slot for him. Initially I thought he'd be a mid to late second rounder because of his lack of a QB but Savage has been solid this season and Sanu has shown he can make all the catches and has the potential to be a do everything type WR. He can hit the HR, is a solid route runner, has excellent hands, can run block, can run the wild cat effectively, and should/ can be a #2 WR out of the gate for the Jets. Sanu will rip up the combine IMO and Jets fans should look for the Rutgers prodigy come draft time for the Jets. 26) Chicago Bears – Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State The Bears need OLine and more of it but I think they look for help on that front via FA by picking up guys like Grubbs or McKenzie. I think the Bears always seem too look at D first and even though Cutler needs a WR as well it seems as though there isnt a 1st round worthy WR left in the 1st, there in part I see them going big time value with the addition of Worthy. Last year the Bears moved up for Paea, who should be solid but they need more bulk inside and thats where i see Worthy dominating and becoming there next Tommie Harris ( at his peak) over his career in Chicago. Its the perfect spot for Worthy to end up. 27) San Diego Chargers- Bruce Irvin, DE/OLB, West Virginia The Chargers make look at NT here but I think they still need an OLB across from Shaun Phillips. Bruce Irvin has shown he is a more effective player standing up and even as a one trick pony he would be a really great one. Irvin would provide instant pass rush too the Chargers D. He should make an impact with time in SD. 28) Detroit Lions - Michael Brewster, C, OSU The Lions are the big surprise team this season and i actually think they could go somewhere in the playoffs. As much as there OLine has been good this season they need to keep adding youth and I think they need a replacement for 10 year vet Raiola too sure up the line, sure up the run blocking for Best, and ultimately keep Stafford protected. They could go 4-3 DE here too but I think they go for Brewster who would be one of the better players available. 29) New England Patriots - Donte Paige-Moss, DE/OLB, North Carolina The Pats new 4-3 D has been up and down but what is becoming a glaring need is a faster, younger, pass rusher to repalce the old Ellis and Carter at the DE spot. Paige-Moss has had an up and down year thus far but still is considered a 1st round pick, he would add another new dimension into BB's defense as well as some needed youth. 30) New England Patriots (From New Orleans) - TJ McDonald, S, USC The Pats safety situation outisde of Chung has been ugly, they have consistently been getting beat deep and the loss of Merriweather is showing. The Pats go D again and pick TJ McDonald, the best safety out of this draft. Now who knows maybe they trade down again for more picks but I think finally this year they have some glaring needs. McDonald would provide much needed safety help as well as some sure tackling. 31) Baltimore Ravens - Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College The Ravens dreams come true and they find a ILB too repalce Ray Lewis for the future. Kuechly becomes the next great ILb for the Ravens and gets too learn under the great Ray Lewis. Luke is a leader, hell of a tackler, and can provide a great run stopping ability right out of the gate. He's been impressive thus far is college and should be even more on an excellent Ravens D. 32) Green Bay Packers – Jared Crick, DE, Nebraska And Thus they repeat again, Im a big believer the Packers can repeat and I think many others are as well. This team doesnt have too many glaring needs besides DE and possibly safety. I think they look to replace Cullen Jenkins with the falling Crick for the 3-4 DE spot. Crick provides great value and a replacement for Ryan Pickett. The rich in this scenario essentially get richer.
Yes I know that was alot to read but I try my hardest at this write up stuff. Now heres the rest of the Jets picks...(added some youtube clips for people to actually see the prospects but some of the later round guy were harder to find or there were no specific videos) 2nd Round- Brandon Lindsey, OLB, Pittsburgh The Jets need pass rush, BADLY, and they couldnt exactly get that in the first round so they go with Lindsey in the second round. Lindsey has shown that he can stand up and play OLB effectively, he reminds me of a better version of Jabaal Sheard. He is a very sure tackler, gets to the QB and creates solid pressure, can play in coverage effectively, and provides some nice power and speed off the edge. His biggest problem is when a tackle gets on him, IMO he needs more pass rushing moves but the Jets look here for Lindsey to provide much needed QB pressure for the D. 3rd Round- Zebrie Sanders, ROT, Florida State Many may know him for "freezing up" on the line against Florida a few years ago but if you knew football you would know that is a one disciplined Offensive lineman, the more I watch this kid the more I love him, he has been a long time starter at RT for the Seminoles and has shown great run blocking ability as well as some agility moving on screens and pitches. I think he will need sometime to develop in the NFL but he has shown he can play well against some of the better ACC players. He should be a nice addition to the Jets Oline. 4th Round- DeMarlo Belcher, WR, Indiana Here's another WR for Sanchez, and he is going to love this one. I am a big believer in doubling up on WR and maybe even adding another vet. If Plax goes the Jets are going to need a good redzone target and Belcher should be just that, his big 6'5 215 frame should be tough enough for any corner to get over in the redzone. He has nice hads and surprisingly good speed, hed be an excellent addition too this new and improved WR core. 5th Round- Trumaine Johnson, FS, Montana The Jets need a ballhawk and although Johnson wont immediately be that he should be a nice addition for the Jets in the future as long as he adjusts to the NFL well. This kid is a great tackler and has a true nose for the ball. He goes this low because of his small level of competition but he has alot of potential and Rex would love this kid with time. He could surprise many IMO. 6th Round- Jake Stoneburner, TE, Ohio State Stoneburner is a great recieving TE that can also block, exactly what the Jets need. His big 6-5 250 frame would be ideal for the run game and his deceptive 4.66 speed for a big TE makes him a somewhat threat in the passing game. He would be a great pick to replace the horrible Mulligan. 6th Round- Omar Bolden, CB, Arizona State I have picked Bolden in one of my drafts before but the more I look at him the more I see a Deunta Williams type situation. A hurt DB that has great potential in the NFL but his injury would most likely scare alot of teams. i think for a late 6th round he's worth the risk. Before his injury Bolden showed great potential as a cover corner and i think with time he could become a great replacement for Strickland. He is a boom or bust pick but thats well worth the risk in round 6. 7th Round ( Possible Mason Pick)- Darius Nall, DE/OLB, Central Florida Nall will make a position change from DE to OLB in the NFL. Last season he racked up 8.5 sacks 9.5 TFL's and looked very impressive along side Bruce Miller at UCF. He once had struggled with cancer but inspired many in a great comeback story to UCF last year. He is a solid run stopper, has alot of heart, and has some ability to pass rush. Westerman and Maybin are solid and Nall would be a great addition too our OLB depth if he makes the roster.
There is no way that Broyles is going to go that high, and I'm a huge fan of his game. Especially for the Redskins who need to get younger in the secondary
I like it. I can't see the Jets making the playoffs with our current offense so I think we'll be picking around 17 (Dear God, I want Burfict), but this would be a good draft.
In that scenario I would see them most likely trading down, they need a QB and a WR, their D is pretty set. They could maybe draft a 3-4 DE but that's high for a position player like that. If they couldn't move out they would take the best WR available and that would be Broyles in this mock.
I'm iffy about the Jets chances to make the playoffs but I don't wanna get too down on this team just yet so I wanted too keep some hope for the Jets getting in by a hair. I want Burfict too but to be honest I don't think we get within a sniff of him, some team will fall in love with him and trade up or pick him high. He'd be a great addition but I doubt we even get close to him .
Finally had time to look over your mock. IMO, a solid job. A lot of similar picks in my Round One mock I did last week. The first 13 picks were about as close to perfect. The Raiders would be pissed Mo Claiborne went just before their selection. I'm not too sure about Broyles that high, he's a great receiver, but has been inconsistent this season, one good game and than a very quiet game. Stills has really stepped up and taken catches away from Broyles. Stills is going to be a solid round 1 pick next year. I think both of us may be overrating Dennard some what. In fact, Lavonte David has been the best defensive player for Nebraska, not Crick or Dennard. I'm a HUGE Lavonte David fan, he's a great undersized LB that is intense, I love his game. Paige-Moss has fallen out of Round one consideration, he's just not getting it done this year. I'm liking Courtney Upshaw more and more for the Jets, especially if we don't make the playoffs. I still expect Upshaw to continue to make plays and his stock rise to mid 1st round. After week 5, I'm not as optimistic as you the Jet's will be in playoff contention, the next 3 weeks will tell the tale. Jets mock: Sanu could be the pick, let's hope he continues to play well the rest of the season. Right now, I have Sanu as an early rd 2 target. The NJ connection may have some merit, we'll see. IMO, the front office realizes now the importance of another WR with the events the last 24 hours. Lindsey isn't perfect and hasn't lived up to last year's play so I expect him to be available in Rd 2. Sanders is a good choice, someone who isn't getting a lot of pub. I mentioned DeMario Belcher in another thread a few days ago, a solid Red Zone target, don't expect him to ever be a #2 WR and his special team ability may be limited. I would prefer Nick Toon or BJ Cunnigham. I see Stoneburner all the time, he has soft hands and can make plays down field. The Buckeyes are limited at WR and Stoneburner has picked up the lack of Wr play. Not having Devier Posey has hurt the Buckeyes, plus they need a QB, that's another story.
I haven't seen any inconsistency in his game-by-game: 14 catches for 158 yards and a TD 7 catches for 55 yards and 0 TDs 13 catches for 154 yards and a TD 4 catches for 109 yards and 2 TDs 9 catches for 122 yards and 1 TD I'm a big fan of Kenny Stills too, but he's benefitting from playing opposite Broyles, who's been doubled all year.
Fair enough! I guess my perception is my reality. I never looked up Broyle's stats this year, but watching Oklahoma games he doesn't seem as involved compared to last year. I'm a huge Broyle's supporter and was hoping he would come out last year. Broyles staying just increased the incredible WR depth in 2012's draft. As far as Stills, I agree I love this kid, he's a baller.
Thanks for the read man, I know its alot too read but I promise its worth it. Worked hard on this thing and wanted to get some more names into fans heads as well as some players stocks that I think are booming. Im pleased you think so, The Raiders would be very pissed in that situation but hey Dre Kirkpatrick isnt too bad of a consolation prize. As MR.E above has shown Broyles has still been doing great things this season when being double covered all day long. I think that translates well in the NFL when he comes in as a #2 with less coverage. Also, I think he will kill the combine and impress many with his exceptional hands and speed. He'll be a household name soon enough if not already. Corners were hard to mock after Kirkpatrick too be honest. I love Dennards skill set though and Im hoping he gets back to for a bit this season. He has shown some flashes of excellent cover skills and I think he regains his stock soon enough. I havent seen much of David so im definitely going too look at him some more, he sounds somewhat exciting. I like Upshaw more than Paige-Moss but I think he rips up the combine. His size and speed is scary good and a team like the Pats would love to mold him into a monster. I am not either but like I said previously I still have some hope. Jets mock: I didnt really pick him just for the NJ connection, although I like local prospects, he just seems to me like he could break out and boom his stock completely. He has impressed me alot thus far and I think he could be an excellent pick come draft day. . I had Lindsey there late in round 2 for that exact reason, his stock is down but his potential is still solid, I would like too see more of him and his combine workouts but I think hes a mid 2nd round prospect at this point. I hate that Sanders gets no attention, he is a long time consistent starter in the ACC who faces great talent week in and week out. Not many are paying attention to him right now since hes just a RT but I think if drafted he could be the starter in a few years, easily. I love Belcher as a big red zone guy, he will be only limited as a red zone WR in the NFL but we need that if Plax goes. Hed be a great asset for Sanchez and should be on peoples radars. Stoneburner's stock should be going up since hes shown he can block and catch efficiently. I think hed be a great pickup for the Jets but too be honest his stock could go up very soon.
Florida State is in the ACC, not the SEC. The ACC is garbage, but Sanders is a solid tackle prospect. I can't disagree with that pick at all.
Lavonte David is all over the field. A big hitter that is tenacious and a smart football player. While Crick and Dennard will be drafted higher, David is the best player, this year, on Nebraska's defense.
My mistake on that one , I'm not sure why I kept saying that. but anyway I do agree that the ACC is lack luster but they do have some solid DEs and LBs coming out this year that Sanders has been solid against.
Just watched some tape on the guy, He reminds me a lot of what I saw from Sean Weatherspoon in college, a great tackler, very solid in coverage, reads plays excellently, makes tackles for losses, and is quick. He looks like a steal for a 4-3 team.
Nice Jets Draft. I had Sanu in my Jets mock as well falling to the mid 2nd, but you are probably right, he'll most likely end up somewhere in round 1 or be picked very early in round 2. I'm not the biggest fan of Lindsey, but if we do end up making the playoffs and drafting that late, he is probably the best 3/4 OLB available. Will have to try and catch some Trumaine Johnson. Zebrie Sanders is a very solid player, I like the pick. Overall great job, was a good read.
interesting read. looking at the salaries (even if they survive that long) 2012 will be the final year for Scott and Pace (they have a combined salary of nearly $20m in 2013! which along with Harris's monster salary would give us 3/4 of a linebacker corp costing over $30m!!!!) so certainly the jets will be looking to go linebacker early but agree WR is an area we have to improve at ASAP.
Thanks alot man appreciate the comments. Sorry I was late too this, didnt notice anyone more commented. Lindsey's stock will all lay on the rest of this season as well as what he can do in the combine. Right now he is a 3rd rounder but I think his stock will increase more and more. Id like a player like Devin Taylor but watch out for Bruce Irvins stock possibly dropping, many as thinking he is just a one trick pony (pass rusher) and not worthy of a 1st round pick. The combine will tell but if his stock dropped watch out for the Jets too go and get him if they didnt draft an OLB in the 1st. Johnson is hard to catch but here's a nice vid on him:
The cap will be helped next year by this year dont forget! The 8-10 Mil we have in cap space will be added too next year if unused so the cap should have some breathing room. I want the Jets too sign a talented WR like Colston, Wayne, Lloyd, Manningham, Vincent Jackson, Stevie Johnson, or Bowe (if KC lets him go which I doubt) then draft a WR in the second but since I cant predict that yet I went WR first since our depth will be pretty bad. Next year IMO will be boom or bust for the Jets since the draft and FA is stacked.
