I corrected my OP, I love Forte, love what he brings to the passing attack, but McKnight could be our guy there. If he has the hands to return kicks he can catch screen passes, etc. They need to integrate him with respect to those offensive sets.
What about Anthony Spencer? He's only 27 and is a pretty good pass rusher. He has 3 sacks this year already. Love the idea of adding Avril. Would be a really good OLB for us and if we could sign him in addition to drafting one in the first 2 rounds, our LB core would look 100x better.
In a shallow market, Anthony Spencer is bound to get overpaid. He actually admitted to giving less than 100% effort last season. I want to see us develop our own talent across from Pace. That means possibly spending our 1st round pick at the position. This is a much better alternative.
I honestly feel we should look into FA for the O-Line help as many young guys never seem ready unless they're top 20 picks its rare to find an impact guy later in the draft I would go O-Line in the 4th round but invest the cap room towards a proven vet. I'd go Round 1- Courtney Upshaw OLB Round 2- Ray Ray Armstrong/Robert Lester SS/FS(I would love to trade our 2013 2nd and 4th and grab both of them) Round 3- Lamar Miller RB Round 4- O-Line Round 5- BJ Cunningham WR Round 6- Corner Round 7- O-Line Again
I would not mind taking a chance on Deunta Williams for FS next year. He was pretty highly regarded in the draft this year, but it became clear he was not going to play this year so he decided not to sign with anyone. The year out of football scares me, but hopefully he is using his time to get back his athleticism and will still have something next year. It would be great to grab him and worry more about other positions in the draft next year.
^ It's highly doubtful that signing a UDFA a year after he went undrafted would alleviate our needs at that position.
my thoughts as well. As much as I championed the guy throughout the draft process, something caused him to go undrafted. Either he isn't as good as we all thought, or his injury is far more severe than anyone here could have imagined. Meaning that it is unlikely he is the answer to our prayers. Also I still don't understand why he didnt sign with a team and go on their IR so that he could get elite NFL AT's working on his body getting him rehabbed to the best shape possible for an NFL career. Which if it doesnt work out, he at least is fully functional for the "real world"
Grab Nicks(G) And Landry(SS) Possibly Mario Williams? And keep all of our draft picks, Go OL, SS(Depending on Landry) WR, OLB(1st Round)
you don't want much do ya? I doubt Laron Landry or Carl Nicks get free from their respective teams. I think its more likely that Mario Williams actually comes loose. The guy is going to get paid oodles and oodles of money regardless of who pays him. He will have a chance to go to an elite team and still get paid more than any defensive player in history. Plus he clearly isnt getting a new deal before the year is up, so after the season, injury risk will be pretty non-existant, so if I were him, I would look to leave for a better team and I think he will do that, as opposed to staying in Houston where they may only win 9 games in the year they should be dominating the division without Peyton in play.
i dont think theres any way mario williams is not, at the very least, franchised cliff avril is a far more realistic option ... hes not quite worth the DE franchise number and the lions have a lot of money tied up in the d-line ... thats the kind of perfect storm that allows guys to hit the market
I was just talking about Avril the other day. Tremendous upside, and unless he wants to play fourth fiddle on that line when Fairley comes back, he may want out.
I've been a huge Avril fan for years, since I follow the Big Ten closely. Avril has the perfect skillset for our defense. I mentioned this before, maybe the other Boilermaker we drafted in Rd 1 of 2008 can convince Avril to eventually become a Jet. Drafting Gholston in 2008 killed our chances for Avril, who was drafted in the later part of Rd 3, which was a steal.
I never knew Avril had been called for as many personal fouls as Suh since 2010(both have 7), kinda makes me want him on the Jets even more... (I know all PFs aren't created equally)
A top tear running back would be absolutely amazing, but without a new OC, they would probably just be swallowed up in the black whole that Schotty considers an offense. Cliff Avril would be ideal because it would free up the front office in other areas, mostly the draft. A RT in the first, WR like Dwight Jones in the 2nd, and OLB in 3rd and we're set... Well at least for Safety. This defense first and foremost HAS to get an athletic safety. Eric Smith should not step foot on an NFL field unless he's running down for kick off coverage. There are a few options in FA but this is key to the Jets having a good offseason. So would it be too much to ask for Cliff Avril and Michael Griffin/Tyvon Branch/Dashon Goldston? And of course, a new OC
Maybin has what 5 sacks already this year, IMO if he can add some weight and play the run better he can become more than just a 3rd down pass rusher.... Will he ever be Suggs or Harrison no but he could become something special considering he was mowing yards this summer.....look at Von Miller
It probably is a lot. Avril is going to be expensive, all pass rushers are. Branch just simply won't come cheaply (he's my preferred off teh FA safety list) so it's probably not likely. Plus we have to get a #2 receiver, be it Plax or somebody else, we can't go into the draft with Holmes and Kerley 1 and 2. I know Tanny is a wizard with the cap, but I don't see how its possible that we could sign Avril, Branch a #2 WR and still have the cap space to put in a quality draft class. Then again, we could restructure some guys, Sanchez probably would change up how is money is earned to fix the cap...
Von Miller was the #2 overall selection. The fact he is a superstar in the makinig is expected. The FO would be stupid to pass on a pass rusher (be it in the draft or FA) because of Maybin. Hell if Maybin develops into a superstar pass rusher, then we have a fantastic problem. 2 guys on the same team who can just kill QB's. That would be amazing. But counting on Maybin is a bad, bad plan.
