It is if you haven't been paying attention to his first two years, when he dealt with bigger crises. But how can you point that out to a guy so busy patting himself on the back?
And, if anything, Rex has shown a remarkable ability to rally the team back AFTER the sky had fallen.
How about after losing to Atlanta in the first season to effectively eliminate them from the playoffs, or the losses to Baltimore, Miami and New England last season when everyone said the sky would fall in. Or how about going into New England last season being a huge underdog. This is not the first crisis and we should all be confident in Rex and Co. to bounce back.
Rex Ryan's Jets are the only team in NFL history to make the playoffs after being unofficially eliminated by their head coach. But yeah I take your point.
the Jets are a good team that simply aren't playing well right now. it happens. after years of bad to mediocre teams that you hoped would be better but always struggled, you would think Jet fans would be able to tell the difference by now. maybe this team won't figure it out this year. maybe this entire season will be a struggle. who knows. but this isn't a bad team, it is a flawed team, and if those flaws can be remedied they can certainly turn this season around. in the end, this is a far less disappointing 2-3 start than any comparable start the team has had prior to Rex, because I don't think it is indicative of a bad team that you only hope will be better. this is a good team and hopefully they get it corrected this year.
Honestly I think the Jets are over-rated right now. The only players on the team that are really plus players are Mangold, Holmes and Ferguson on the offensive side, with a nod to LaDainian Tomlinson in a part-time role, and Revis, Harris and Scott on the defensive side. The Jets have a lot of good journeyman types alongside those six players and a few potential risers in Sanchez, Wilson and Wilkerson but I don't think it is a stretch to say the Jets are the least talented team right now among the group that would be considered upper echelon in the NFL. By the end of the season I doubt they will still be considered upper echelon.
This is the 1st crisis because nobody expected anything in 2009 and the 2010 team got in trouble after the Patriots game when the playoffs were all but locked up. If you guys think 2-3 and no defense and troubles all over on offense are fine, great. We're 1 Tony Romo stupidity away from matching The Iggles in the futility department.
great wins and great seasons, but this is a different team and different year. you can't rely on what you did last year and expect it to be the same outcome this year. constantly playing on the road and the odds will eventually catchup with you! past playoff games are just that, "the past", not what this team should be looking to try repeating.
Rex isn't immune from blame on all of this. After all, he is the head coach. I know to some he can't do any wrong, because we all love him, however, when the team sucks, the coach needs to take blame as well. I just hope that the skid stops at 3.
I am beginning to realize that this is more than just Schotty calling bad offenses, but our flaws this year (and in the past) reach deeper than that. Tanny seemed to not even address our lack of O-linemen last offseason. Whats the point of drafting a guy such as Powell if we don't even have a good offensive line? I'd rather take on UDFAs especially when they would be fighting for the 3rd string at the HB position. Another problem that Tanny has created was getting rid of BOTH Braylon and Cotch. I realize that Braylon wanted #1 money, got the DUI, etc, but bringing in Mason who has done nothing over keeping a class act like Cotchery who is tough as nails has slowed down this offense. The CS is essentially making Sanchez start all over again with chemistry with his receivers. While I think Rex knows a thing or two about offense, his problem is that he relies too much on Schotty to call the offense for him as if the offense is something that runs independently of his control. Whenever the Jets are in crisis mode like this, Ryan starts to take over and simply things. Returning to the ground and pound was not a bad idea, but Rex should have told Schotty what to do in terms of the passing game as well.
The biggest blunder for the OL was Ducasse. If they got even a decent player with that pick, the line would be in much better shape. In terms of WR, I think they just tried to do the best with the situation they were given. Don't forget that Cotch wanted out and Braylon wanted more than they were willing to give. Braylon is hurt and Cotch has 0 catches this season. Both players are to blame for their actions. Should the Jets have looked for better options? Possibly, but that's what they got. As I've said, we can hope Kerley develops into a solid #3, and who knows, maybe better. Either way, something needs to be done with the offense. There's always the idea that you can fire 1 coach or you can fire a whole team. Firing 1 coach is much easier. Looking at Schotty's track record, it's easy to point the blame on him, which is why most of us are calling for his head. However, if there's a deficiency in that part of the team, then Rex as head coach needs to put an increased focus on it. Not just an increased focus, but maybe even make it his #1 priority until the thing gets fixed.
Especially considering that quarterback is not one of our elite players. That's the issue with our depth. We have no young players that seem ready to play big roles and help make a big impact.
