conley is killing us... he gave them great field position all game.... dont see why they chose him over keeping weatherford... weatherford was consistent throughout the season last year... shit the bed in the playoffs but showed what he can do... as of now, conley BLOWS and is not helping our cause... anyone know of any punters available
That news story of Westhoff talking shit about Weatherford is pretty ironic now that we have Conley and he's even worse than Weatherford. I liked Steve, I thought he was a hell of a punter and one of the better ones we've had in a while and I was pretty shocked when we didn't re-sign the guy, even with his so-so postseason performance. Oh well, we're stuck with Conley for the time being...
I thought about this yesterday too. His punts yesterday realy sucked, and I can't reemmber him wowing me even once this season.
i liked steve too... i remember a lot more good punts than bad ones from him...just another questionable off season decision... if this shit play continues for the team in general, tanny's got some explaining to do... some explaining that we'll never get to hear
I thought he a 1 or 2 nice punts yesterday. However,a couple of them were just terrible. Conley is 22nd in the league in net punting. The Giants are 21st.
Conley has sucked hard. I'd be much more comfortable with Weatherford, but that boat sailed. Westoff needs to make Conley better if we are going to punt so often.
Not to veer off into a different topic, but it's encouraging that Joe McKnight seems to be the great equalizer on special teams yardage.
Mike Westhoff is maybe the greatest unit coach anywhere in the NFL at this point in terms of his results. I give him a pass on this one I think. Dick LeBeau is pretty good too. I think those are the two candidates for best unit coach right now and they have been for about ten years which is an amazing run.
Absolutely, ST are the least of our worries. He's the reason why it didn't matter that we let Brad Smith go. He just plug someone in (McKnight) and usually get similar results. From Chad Morton to Leon to Brad to Joe.
Ftr, Punting in very important to this team....When we lost Weatherford I said that it was one of our bigger losses simply because as a defensive team, field poisition goes hand in hand. That can't simply be pushed to the side. Weatherford was one of the best Punters during the regular season. Week in and Week out he set up our D. On the other side, if you win the FP battle, your offense's chance of scoring increases based off a good starting FP.
I thought he played well week 1.. to be honest, since then I haven't really noticed or payed much attention to him. Has he been that bad?
although there are much bigger problems, field position has such a huge impact on a game... the punting game usually goes unnoticed, meanwhile were literally giving them free yards with these shitty punts... give brady a shortened field time after time and your not going to win... this IS a problem and unline our other problems, this is a one player fix... the question is WHO?
See above PJ4. Conley is directly behind Steviey-boy in punting this year. Clearly this is more an indictment on weatherford than it is on Conley being good. Conley is average at best, but as shown by Weatherford's postseason and struggles early this year, we were right to move on. We just didnt find any good options out there on the market. As a result Conley is the guy we went with, and so far is as serviceable as weatherford has been. Do I wish we had a better punter? Hell yes. But we could certainly do worse than Conley, no matter how unbelievable that may sound.
