Historically speaking, anyone have numbers on an offense's relative performance for the remainder of the season when you replace the OC? There are probably some obvious examples but I'm brainfarting.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Billick The Ravens missed the playoffs in 2004 (9–7) and 2005 (6–10) before bouncing back in the 2006 season. Billick fired offensive coordinator Jim Fassel on October 17, 2006, assuming the role for the remainder of the season, as the Ravens earned a franchise best 13–3 record, won the AFC North and earned the first playoff bye in team history. Baltimore, however, lost to eventual Super Bowl champions, the Indianapolis Colts, 15–6, in the divisional round. In 2007, the Ravens dramatically dropped to 5-11. That prompted team owner Steve Biscotti to fire Billick. "The team has to move on," he said. He was replaced by John Harbaugh.
There is no mileage in this "fire Shotty" strategy. Rex is not throwing Shottenheimer under the bus; it's not his style. If we are frustrated think how Rex must feel, that Offensive coaching staff is packed with thoroughbreds. We need to get a bit more aggressive with our play calling and start to generate some confidence.
I think it's unlikely as well. Just wanted some empirical data about whether a change like that is better served in the off-season.
I do not believe Rex is as frustrated as the fans because he actually has the power to change it, we as fans do not and that is what is so maddening. I understand Rex is loyal and isn't going to throw anyone "under the bus", but how is firing someone throwing them "under the bus" ? Blaming him endlessly for the teams ineptitude, would be doing that, replacing him because he isn't working is different imo. *Note* Rex is pissed and frustrated at the losing, we all know that, I simply meant on the particular issue of "To fire or not to fire Shotty" I don't think he is as frustrated as "we" are. **Edit** I do agree with you that he is unlikely to be fired before the end of the season, I just don't think if he were it would be him getting thrown under the bus.
There are already multiple threads dedicated to eviscerating what's left of schottenheimer. This thread is an attempt to gather pertinent info related to whether, historically, changing OC's has been a positive move or if teams are better of just waiting until the season is over.
I haven't seen Rex's contract. That would have the actual information on whether Ryan can hire or fire people without front office consent, which is pretty doubtful. He could raise hell and make a recommendation to the front office, but he likely does not have the actual power to make the decision.
This seems most likely given his demeanor and handling of the situation. So Tannenbaum will have to be the on to actually fire him. Unless Schotty helped him hide a dead hooker it'd better happen soon.
there are basically no stats because it doesn't happen. the ravens were a rare case and the oc was running the head coach's offense anyway, so the change made little difference in scheme. if you are thinking of giving up on the season and calling it a waste, then you fire your oc. otherwise, you play out the season and hope to make the right adjustments. shotty will finish out the season, or else it will be considered throwing him under the bus!
Well, I'll say this. The Schedule maker clearly set out to fuck us over. We ALWAYS travel to Oakland, and to go West and start a three game road trip that follow that up with Baltimore and NE, is ridiculous. And, Boger was clearly out to push last nights game. We got killed by the officiating last night. Boger GAVE the Giants a win two weeks ago, and did his part for NE last night. All I want out of this season, even if we do miss the playoffs (I doubt it), is for Rex to start learning how to APPRECIATE and offense. He can Attack one, but he seems to have no appreciation for how to make one impervious to attack. That would explain his comfort with Schottenheimer. Parcells used to take over Offensive play calling, and he started out as a defensive coach. If Rex is getting some OTJ training in that regard, we're good. If he does not...
