Look, if we have an elite defense, we don't allow a 13 play drive with 7 minutes left and don't give our offense one more chance. They played fairly well. But I can think of a number of games, not just last year's Steelers game, where we couldn't get a big stop late. I realize they were on the field a good amount, but people need to stop making excuses all the freaking time for everybody. The Pats were on the field 4 more minutes than average, and there were multiple time outs and reviews in this game for rests. We got pushed around by the Patriots on that last drive. If you think that the OP is completely off-base, then you're an ignorant homer. Our defense is good, one of the top defenses in the league. But too often, when our defense sorely needs a stop in the 4th quarter, they can't come up with it. They deserve some criticism. Obviously, the offense deserves more blame, but to say that the defense is blameless because they were on the field too much is a load of crap.
Yes, the offense is a huge problem right now, whether it's the oc, the qb, or a combo of both. But they did get us to within six, with seven minutes to play. Fatass is always shooting his mouth off about his vaunted d, and, tired or not, that's when they have to show up.
Ellis was running all over them the entire game moron. What game were you even watching? If 8 minutes more in time of possession isnt that huge of a discrepancy. Quit making excuses for them. How many 100 yard rushers have they now allowed this year? Where do they rank in terms of stopping the run and total defense? Sit down and shut up.
Ok fine we won't consider this game....the defense was gassed. Fine. What was the defense as the end of the AFC title game when we just needed the ball back to have a chance to win down by 5? Was it gassed then too? How about vs the colts when we had a 2 pt lead and we needed to keep them out of FG range and the defense let them march down the field for a FG...was it gassed?(Thank God for the good kickoutt return in that one)....bottomline is and as many people have agreed with me....this defense DOES struggle to make the clutch stop.
*Raises hand!* If 1 are offense only get 11 3rd down tries.... and 2 only coverts 3 THATS ALOT OF TIME ON THE FIELD
No point in trying to reason with MikeHomer. He has his mind set that this is some elite defense we've been seeing out there all year and if it wasn't for Schotty and the offense, the defense would be top 3....
I think this thread is VERY unfair to the defense. The offense was AWFUL and kept going 3 and Out. The Patriots offense is #1 in the league. By the time the 4th quarter rolled around, the D was gassed. How can you not understand that? Even you Mack.
Yeah it's really easy to stop Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.. that's why everyone does it. Didn't the Jets D hold Peyton Manning to 14 points the whole game until the end in that playoff game? What were the Steelers offensive stats like in that playoff game? This defense carries the team over and over, and then a slight fuck up and everyone likes to jump all over them. How about the Jets scoring ZERO points in teh first half vs the Colts last year. How about the Jets scoring THREE points in the first half vs the Steelers. How about the Jets O doing NOTHING today for the most part. How about Shittenheimer calling plays leading to 3 and outs over, and over, and over when the D kept holding the Pats and putting them in position to take a lead.
Ok but I want you to forget today's game because this thread is not only about today's game. It's an ongoing theme with this D.
Umm the defense has been top 3 the past 2 years, what exactly is your point? Do you even watch the games? I bet you are one of the retards who thinks Shittenheimer is a good OC and the O isn't a problem. Let's all blame Rex and the defense!!! They kept the Pats in check all game.. dominated the playoffs last year, but they didn't get one stop at the end. Cry me a fucking river. The offense is the problem on this team, not the defense. I'm sorry you don't know anything and think it's super easy to stop Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.. I don't know what to tell you.
Some people so easily forget how McFadden and Jones-Drew ran wild on this defense but at least they are top 10 backs. The offense is a disaster but the defense deserves a ton of blame this year as well. Its baffling how some people are so eager to give them a free pass and blame every awful defensive performance on them being tired. They need to be criticized and held accountable just like Sanchez and the offense has been.
What is the point of the thread then? The Jets D is not the 2000 Ravens D? We all know that. The Jets are 2-3. Dallas win was due to ST and Defense. Raiders loss was overall bad play, Ravens loss was terrible O play, Jets D was great. Today Jets D was good again. Ideally you want a big time defense to shut teams down. The Jets D is not that this year. We all know that though.
The offensive problems are well documented but the bottom line is that it seems whenever the Jets get close at the end of a game and need that defensive stop...they can't get it. See, the offense gets criticism but the defense doesn't so much. This defense just isn't clutch. This defense reminds me of Armando Benitez...I don't know how familiar you are with baseball but he was a relief pitcher who would ALWAYS mess up at the most clutch times but people would site how well he did over the long hall. But that's no good...you need to be good at CRUNCH TIME TOO!
This defence is good not great....frankly their are no great defences in this league...Baltimore/Jets/Pitt defences are the top tier ones. If we had a half decent offense we would be 4-1 now...if our running keeps improving and we go back to the team we were this defence is good enough to get us to the playoffs & once their make some noise but with this offense gets us at most another AFCCG loss & that is if the running game is effective...
The Jets failed to stop the Pats on that last drive because of the personnel the Jets had on the field. It was not the fault of the defensive players. The Jets CS was too stupid to realize that they had to go back to a base defense for that last drive. The Jets had 5-6 DBs on the field until the Pats crossed into Jets territory and stayed in the nickel until the Pats were in the red zone. Pettine and Ryan take the blame for that one.
