I hadn't thought about what Martin28 said before, but he's right. Namath's never been out in the media as much as before, and the Jets are actually relevant for the first time (in the media, at least) since the Parcells days. You could argue about the whole Herm "Play to win..." speech, but in terms of national media, we were barely a blip on the radar then. The one thing I will not dispute is that Rex puts us out there, so he is opening himself to these types of remarks. I just wish a guy like Namath cared a little more when we were the sad sacks of the league. I've always been a bit of a sports media junkie, and I don't remember him ever saying a word.
So what? I don't get this argument. Again, it is really a homer's criticism of WHAT Namath is saying, not THAT he is saying something. If you agreed with what he said you wouldn't be saying "Great observation, Joe! But since you haven't been saying all along stuff I totally agree with, shut your pie hole, old man!" No. Something tells me if you agreed with him, you'd be saying something different.
You're right. I don't agree with him. I don't think ANY coach should tell his team otherwise. Even if the team goes 0-16, I don't think its a good "tactic" to be like, "you know what, you guys fucking suck." This doesn't mean I don't think they're a mediocre team, right now, because quite the contrary, they are a .500 team, the very definition of mediocre. Go look it up...he's never said shit until now. If I'm a homer, like I said, then so be it. I guess if you agree, you liked all those 5-11 and 6-10 years then, huh? I wish ANYBODY would have opened their mouth back then.
Maybe Joe is right in that respect and the Jets - as well as just about every other team in the league - is unprepared. No offseason this year, no minicamps, no OTAs, an abbreviated pre-season and restrictions on practices during the year. The Jets got very little opportunity to work in new players on the d-line, WR and the o-line. Throw in the fact that Brandon Moore was hurt for the majority of the pre-season, Rob Turner thrown on IR, Ducasse most likely has busted, and Mangold being hurt, why should anyone be suprised by an offense out of sorts? It is hard to prep during the week when you are trying to get players upto speed, are limited by practice restrictions, and trying to plug holes on the offensive line. The Jets used to basically all-out hit scrimmage on Thursdays before gameday and that has all been eliminated with the new CBA. Tackling is a perishable skill - if you don't do it every week you get soft and begin to shy away from contact. O-line blocking is probably the most complex movement of 5 parts in pro-sports - it takes months of prep, practice and repititions for the best lines to optimally perform. Take an All-Pro center out of the equation and throw in an underperforming RT and this is what you get. It isn't helped by the fact that Schottenheimer needs to go and there is some understandable regression by a QB in his 3rd year as the shackles come off the throwing game. Add in the fact that Rex has pumped up this team and expectations, so yeah it is all a bit of a letdown. The problem is that Joe just wants his soundbite out to push his latest and greatest. Of course a nuanced discussion and observation of what is truly hurting the team doesn't generate website hits or gain more Twitter followers. That is why you get Joe blasting away as he has. Is some of it legit? Sure, there is always some truth in all criticism, but their is no context whatsoever in those inflammatory soundbites. As a lifelong Jet fan, Joe is entitled to his opinion and certainly many of his points have merit. My problem is that I wish he and other Jets were more vocal when this team truly sucked and had no direction from the top.
If Namath was right that completely changed last night. Apparently there was enough anger in the locker room afterwards that nobody will be taking anything for granted right now.
He's said some positive things in the past two seasons, but he does love to complain about the team. Remember his appearance on Hard Knocks last season?
I haven't seen shorts hiked up that high since a young nerd named Steve Urkel burst onto the scene in the mid 90's.
Somebody gave Joe a microphone again. http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/sto...pares-rex-ryan-rips-others-new-york-jets-loss
These people who don't think Namath has been out in the media before the past few years are absolutely fucking delusionsal. Namath has been in the media commenting on football off and on again for 50 years. Hell Namath was a color commentator on MNF. He has been in the media more lately since he's been sober for the past 8 yrs or so and he is very popular on Sirius NFL and has been making the talk show circuit as an entertaining guest etc. Most importantly - Namath was absolutely correct in his critique of this team and Matt Slauson needs to STFU because he clearly doesn't know wtf he's talking about and he is getting his butt kicked on a weekly basis. The homers here who think Joe should just say nice things about the Jets even when they are playing poorly are nuts. His comments are right on the money and if the Jets don't like them then the Jets should win a football game.
I was rooting Joe on for talking until he got to the part about it NOT being Sanchez's fault. Since I think it at least partly is Sanchez's fault, I went from thinking Joe has a right to be heard and to say what he thinks, to thinking that old drunk should shut his pie hole!
he was one of the worst color commentators in the history of televised sproting events, he didn't last long on MNF or on NBC. There's a reason for this.
Namath haters certainly make their arguments a moving target. First it was that he didn't say anything before last week. Which of course you had to not be paying attention or are 8 or something to think in the first place. I guess now we also have that he was supposed to be a bad commentator. Alrighty then. The homers here are certainly serious about being homers, I will grant you that.
