We have tried different things, we have had marginal success on the outside but when you face a D w/ the speed of Bal it's tough to get to the edge anyway. Would I liked to have seen them try? sure but w/ our Ol we would have struggled to run on the '03 Jets. You THINK these plays are the same, they aren't. Just b/c some plays may have similar looks doesn't make them the same.
he was under center. (and, just between you and me, if the ball was OUT, it would not have been fumbled) If he WAS IN THE SHOTGUN, he'd have SEEN Ed Reed. Simple thing. He was under center, and in the I formation most of the night. He had NO BUSINESS being under Center at all. Watch a NE game.
so now you wanted him in the gun on 1st down inside our 10 yd line? You never mentioned under C or shotgun before. it as get the ball out w/in 3 secs which is what they tried to do all night.
I hated every minute of this game but can't help but believe good will come out of it and that will start against NE this week.
so you are saying we had more success on the outside.... exactly my point. why not go to more of that. baltimore has speed, they also are sick up the middle. so why run behind a rookie center up the guy and keep going to that but not run off tackle, which had some level of success? perfect example of how shotty cant adjust
I can slightly understand some people defending Shittenheimer for the past 2 games because of Mangold's injury and the o-line being in shambles. But this is a years-long thing now. He's been here over 5 years and it's the same crap over and over. It's not just a 1 or 2 week thing and people are overreacting. And now his players are clearly turning on him.. respected players like LT and Holmes, and now the quarterback all have said something about the offense being predictable.
when a team is just pinning their ears back you would think you would call a few screens (havent seen one to keller this year), draws, traps, counters, etc. how about some max protect to give us a shot a beating their coverages on a double move? how about doing what dilfer said teams have had success against the ravens doing and running out of spread formations? nope, not schotty
Oh stop. Haven't you figured out that making sense has no place in this thread? Look at the title! This is exactly it. Firing Schottenheimer looks like an easy answer, because if the offense is complete failure it either has to be the coach or the entire unit. The sad thing is, and no one wants to face it, is that the problem is the entire unit. Starting at QB. You put it best. At his best, Sanchez is average. With the OLine at full strength, and his receiving corps, average is good enough to win. The problem, as last night showed, when the OL doesn't stop anyone, he can't make do. He just fails. As for the ground 'n pound, it would help if we had a RB who could create in space. You know, like a McKnight kind of player, rather than that clown Shonn Greene. No question the playcalls weren't very smart. I can't defend the playcalling last night, but at the same time, Sanchez yelling "KILL KILL KILL" loud enough for the broadcasters to comment on the play change isn't exactly making the job tough for the defense. When you give away every single play and lead on every single throw, to an elite defense, you're going to get murdered. As above, the "KILL KILL KILL" tells you all you need to know regarding Sanchez's allowance to change plays. Anyone who didn't already think Sanchez changes almost every play at the line is fooling themselves. I've been saying it for more than a year now. This is crazy. When Greene goes outside he just gets an extra yard before a LB tackles him. Forget monster, forget even great, he's not even good. As a COP back, I'd say okay, but we need to see if McKnight can be a feature back. That is way too optimistic for me. Good for you though Don. I just can't see how we don't get brutalized in Foxboro. -------------- I actually think it's funny that everyone is indicting Schotty today, with things like Mason's comments and lack of planning. It's even more funny that someone quoted Clowney's tweet. Yes, he is a reliable source of info. Let's try quoting Woody now: So yeah. I'm going to take the words of the guy with the rings over the preseason champion. -------------- All that said, I'd be fine firing Schotty right now. Simply so that I can start an entire "I told you this offensive unit F&*#ING SUCKS" when it doesn't change a thing.
I've defended Schotty on these boards for years, but even now I'm starting to join the 'fire him' camp. I get the o-line blows and from there everything is spiraling control, but a good OC learns to adjust. Schotty should be going into games with the mindset 'our o-line isn't very good right now, how can we best combat this.' And the answer is to get more quickness involved. I love Shonn Greene, but he's the exact opposite of what this team needs right now. Greene is a punishing type RB, a strict north and south runner who needs holes to wear down defenders, which the o-line isn't creating for him. I feel like if we put McKnight in, he can use his quickness to turn some corners at the edge for big plays. How about some screens? He needs to learn to turn lemons in lemonade, and at the moment he isn't doing that.
Whether or not you agree that Schotty deserves to be fired, I think that there is enough doubt in the locker room that it's probably the best course of action. Sometimes just making the change can kickstart a talented group of guys. So much of this game is mental, you almost have to treat perceived problems the same as ACTUAL problems
And with all this, what did the great Shittenheimer do with Pennington and Brett Favre before Sanchez? Nothing. In fact, those guys went on to have much better seasons ONE year after leaving Shotty's offense. Does that tell you anything, or no? This is not a 1 week or 2 week thing. This is a 5+ year thing and this guy has not done anything to give anybody any confidence in him. You can defend him all you want and say it's everyone else's fault over the course of 5 years, but at what point does the finger get pointed at him?
No one on the staff. I probably should have clarified before, I don't mean fire him immediately, you really can't get away with changing OCs in the middle of the season (but it might be time to change who calls the plays though), but it should be the first thing done in the off-season. Then I'd like to see the names Rex would float. He previously wanted Hue Jackson, so I know at least he wouldn't have his head up his ass with his choices.
I may have a rep here as a defender of Schotty, but I have always said if they can get someone in there to do the job better than him, they should do it. I just think it's more on the players, particularly Sanchez, who is just not that good, Tanny for letting the OL decline and not get enough bench strength, than it is on Schotty. And for those who say it can't get worse, bring back Paul Hackett (or someone like him) and it will get worse. Having said that, part of me says why not get rid of him just to see wht the Haters say when that probably solves nothing. At least that would be entertaining, even if the Jets do not play any better.
anyone else find it hysterical that a Mangini coach is being called "predicable" I find that hilarious.
