I can't believe any Red Sox fan wouldn't feel anything but outrage right now. Terry Francona is a great manager. You know he bunted the least amount of times last year? That's the mark of a great manager

This is just as bad as what happened the other night. I do think he had little desire to come back though. I heard an interview with him last week where he was asked that question directly and the way he answered sure seemed like a guy who didn't want to come back.

This really sucks though. He was the best manager I can remember the Sox having. They better not do something boring like promote Demarlo Hale or something. If you're going to get rid of Francona, at least bring in someone fun or completely insane.

I'm surprised by this, and surprised there was even talk about Francona getting canned. The guy brought two titles to Boston after a loooong drought. I figured he'd get the "leave whenever you want" treatment after that. I also can't blame him for this collapse. I think it was as simple as lack of execution that did Boston in this year.

There is a case to be made that it is the manager's job to get the most out of a team, and as such he has to take a good chunk of the blame for a team that was one of the most talented in the league not making the playoffs two years in a row. Of course the players are also to blame, and they had injury issues the last two years, but bottom line, it isn't about what you did 4-7 years ago, the team has underperformed their talent level the last few years.

I'm still pissed that the Mets didn't fire their manager immediately after the '07 collapse.

The pitching stuff sucking 10-ways from Sunday was the biggest factor. THey could not stop people from scoring.

I'm not even a Sox fan and it pisses me off. It's like really? I'm not a Yankee fan but I'd be celebrating right now knowing that no matter who they hire he isn't going to be better then the guy they just had. This could be the beginning of another drought in bean town. Hopefully this negative energy rubs off on the team that hasn't won a Super Bowl since they got caught cheating.

Philly fans are glad they didn't.

This will be the off-season thread. How many more days before JD Drew gets off the books?! I hate that POS minus one big hit

    If I'm the GM...
Sign Papelbum to a 1 year deal, as he prefers.
Sign Joe Nathan to a 2 year deal.

    Better closer stays! yay!!
