I would love to see Brady's stats if he played in that era. He might not have played more than a few seasons. QB's were fair game targets as ere receivers.
Today's QBs would laugh at the hits from those normal sized men of the 60s and 70s. The reason they protect the QBs now is b/c the players are so damn big, strong and fast they would literally kill the QBs.
So, Willie Lanier, Jack Tatum, Joe Greene, etc etc etc are pussies that would have bounced off Tom Brady. Gotcha. Those people used to break helmets. Brady's knees are relatively soft in comparison, and would have been fair targets. Brady would 'Out-Tall' them though, you got me there, but his 40 time is lacking. On average the guys were much smaller. QBs weren't 230-240-250 lbs, QBas today are as big as some DEs and most LBs back in those days. Those were tough guys but they never saw QBs this size back then and the caliber of athlete was not on today's level.
A KC DL or the Oakland Raider D line that averaged about 260 with a couple of guys in the 270's are much smaller than todays rushing Line Backers in the 3/4. A 260 pound lineman who was allowed to go to the head of the OL man with his hands, where the OL man couldn't even extend their arms and the QB was lined up on an extended hash mark pinched into one side of the field would be safe today? Not to mention they could lead with their helmet go to the head of the QB but todays 255lb linebacker who can't go to the head on the OL man who's opposition is allowed to fully extend their arms on them who can't use their head or go to the head with their arms and the QB has the hash marks pulled in and you consider todays QB more at risk? Brady would have had the crap kicked out of him for pointing at a Ref about a hit to the legs or the head back in those days.:rofl::rofl:
I don't have the time or patience to be junco's arguing partner today, but I would imagine if the pint size defensive players from that era were knocking the shit out of offensive lineman, they wouldn't be afraid to take a headfirst flying spear shot toward the back, gut, head or knees of a 250 lb quarterback. Or pick him up and drive his throwing shoulder into the ground on a sack. Especially since it was a legal hit then and considered part of the game.
I don't think you guys realize how much bigger, stronger, faster and more athletic today's players are. If the old rules applied guys would be getting killed on an annual basis.
I didn't say they'd be afraid, they just wouldn't have the same effect as they did against the MUCH smaller and less athletic players of their day.
How come Namath is the only QB in HOF with more INT then TD? All I get is the era he was in but what about Jonny U? and other QB who are in HOF from that era. I agree with you Joe Mouth is the most overated player in AFL/NFL history.
Uh, I have worked at least a 100 NFL games on the field, been to training camps and in the locker rooms before and after games. I have a vague idea from seeing it up close.
waitwut? junc is saying that the QB's are bigger and tougher now. And he's also saying they had to change the rules to protect these big tough QB's? Some rules were for player safety. Some rules were changed to help generate more offense- because it makes for a better spectator sport. They stopped DB's from playing bump and run all the way down the field because it was shutting down the passing game, not because people were getting hurt on the bump and run. Either way- they hamper how the defense plays the game and benefit the offense.
if your ramblings were factual, you wouldn't keep coming back here. Unless you're one of those weirdos that enjoys whipping yourself with a leather belt buckle.
so you are a lawyer and work for NFL teams? You are one talented man. So in all your years of experiencing NFL football up close you don't think the size, speed, strength of players has chanced throuhg the years?
I'm saying players in general are much bigger and stronger. Not just QBs. The players around the QBs have grown tremendously and the rules are there to protect QBs, if the players of the 70s hit today's QB's they'd laugh compared to what they get hit by now.
No not at all. Look at how many post I have on here. Most of them came when I first came here. I come on here just about everyday but I don't post that much. I just like to come here and get info about the Jets. It easier!!
