Namath has already been to see them practice under Rex. I think the point of that remark was to further illustrate that is on the outside and doesn't have the foggiest idea what went on with the Jets last week to prepare them for the Raiders game. And Namath will probably jump at the chance to go see practice, on a media day, with the cameras flashing as he smiles his pearly whites, and then when the Jets let him sit in on a meeting Namath will pontificate about antiquated passer techniques and tell stories about the days when he played, until someone changes the subject to how many broads he tapped 30 years ago and everybody leaves the room with laughs and back slaps. And then in another month Namath with make another attention-grab and maybe it will all happen again.
If Namath's comments help motivate the team to defeat the Ravens and the Pats and we wind up 4-1, bring on the fucking comments.
Whats funny is..Rex hasnt talked trash the whole season So where are u getting he needs to stfu from?
I honestly think that after the cakewalk Jags win they were looking ahead towards the big showdowns with the Ravens and Pats. He sure as hell wasn't trying to figure out how to stop McFadden, if he was then he is not the coach he says he is. Everyone deals with shitty losses in their own way, some people get like cornered animal and defend the team at all costs. I am still mad as hell, that did not look like a team capable of winning a championship.
I wont diss Namath because he's basically the Jet God. And he does have a point. I think Rex does have the Jets thinking they're better than they are. But he's done that since day one. He said we were SB favorites with a rookie QB. That was crazy talk. But we led at halftime of the AFC Championship Game, so it helped. That could lead to a lack of focus in a game like Oakland, which is unacceptable. But its hard to quantify how much that hurts the team. Rex has this team thinking they're SB favorites again. Talent-wise, or at least the way the OL is playing, I don't think that's true. But in the end, I have no problem with the team thinking they're the best. It might have more benefits than problems.
Joe knows what he talking about since he wasn't as good as he thinks he was. He the most overated QB in NFL history.
How does Joe know that Rex isn't calling them out in private? Seems to me Joe is just a frustrated old Jets fan throwing his beer at the TV screen.
Joe needs to realize that he's not a journalist and stop criticizing the team like he's with the Star Ledger. Our most famous player and ambassador for the team ripping the coach is completely unnecessary and self-motivated
Do you not understand verbs? Supposedly, he's been sober for a while, which is probably why he is talking so much.
Joe is basically an ex drunk fan being paid for his opinion. He's doing what any fan would do critizing the team when they suck and praising them when they're good. Lets face it if the team ends up sucking this year fans are going to blame Rex. If the team ends up great this year fans are going to praise Rex. I suspect from week to week that's exactly what Joe is going to do.
I didn't see Babe Ruth play either but I know how great he was. The game Joe played and the game these guys are playing is very different and some of these players parents weren't born when Joe was at his peak. I'm not sure how motivating it would be, we saw their reaction on hard Knocks last summer. So was Belichick looking past Buffalo? teams have bad games, it's natural. It happens every year. Did we look like a team capable of even winning a playoff game week 1 last year? or during the 45-3 loss or Miami loss?
He wants that lime light back so bad. So this is his best way of getting it back by dogging Rex. He couldn't dog our coaches in the past because they did suck and that wasn't new to anybody. You never heard his mouth this much before Rex Ryan came to town.
When you look at their entire careers and their physical abilities, the advantage goes to Vinny, except for the one big game Namath won. Even there, you look at the different eras--Joe won a home playoff game and it got him to the Super Bowl, Vinny did the same and it got him to Denver where the rest of the team couldn't hang onto the ball. Not related to junc. See above.
This is the problem I have with it also. And Lord knows we've had a lot of talk about "Home Field Advantage." Everyone in this league knows you've got to have like 12 wins to do that, so every game is super critical. I'm not saying all this "better than you really are" talk leads a team to think past a game like Oakland, but I'm sure it's going to be one game we wish we had back come December.
Vinnie had much more zip on the ball than Namath ever did and more range. He played for some pretty shitty teams most of his career, especially those early years at Tampon Bay, so we'll never know. But just because a QB doesn't win the big one doesn't mean he wasn't a good QB. Look at Dan Marino.
That's a pretty good point. No one truly believes that he runs around all week going, "Man, we can't lose this week because we're so fucking good." I just think this is the way the man is made... it's his style. "We'll kick your ass and then we're goin' to win the Superbowl this year." I just think it's not Joe's style... at all... except for the SB prediction at the end. That kind of talk didn't sit well with that entire generation. Can you imagine Vince Lombardi talking that way? He was low-profile smash-mouth and probably brow-beat his players' confidence levels down like dogs. Got them so pissed they'd go out and trounce another team just to get him off their backs and prove him wrong. Ryan's style is 180 degree the other way perhaps.
You can attack Namath, bring up his personal shortcomings, but the bottom line is, he's right. Rex is a defensive genius. We returned ten starters, and yet our defense got eviscerated by the Cowboys' passing game, and the Raiders' running game. It looks bad, and reeks of overconfidence.
