Wanted to do one of these in a few weeks but since the forum has been active I decided to throw it out there now too see what you all think. So any feedback would be awesome as always. First off it has become obvious what the Jets need in the upcoming draft to become an even more complete team, these top priorities are as followed in this order in my own opinion: 1.OLB 2. WR 3. RT In this upcoming draft I think the offense gets a little more attention since its obvious to this franchise that we are only a few steps away from becoming more of an elite team in the NFL. And for us to progress even further Mr. Sanchez needs to have all the help he can get to develop even more. So here it goes: 1st round- Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame Yes I know Baker Maker you're smiling right now because of this pick but its a solid one that even non ND fans should love. First off, I think with the Patriots picking twice in the first they screw us over at OLB and take a top DE/OLB like Paige-Moss or Brandon Jenkins ( yes I know they run a 4-3). So instead we go with best player available with Michael Floyd. I think by signing two older WRs the Jets tipped there hat a bit in there interest in getting a young WR for next season. Im not 100% sure the Jets sign back Plax but even if we do we need to get some youth/depth in this WR core. Floyd I think remains onE of the top players left towards the end of day one since I think there will be a run on WRs like Blackmon, Jeffery, Broyles, and maybe even Fuller. Floyd possess exactly what the Jets need to replace Plax, a young WR with great size, good speed, solid route runner, hell of a deep threat, and beautifully soft hands. He should become a great WR to grow with Mark and fans should be very excited if we draft him. 2nd round- Vinny Curry, OLB , Marshall I hate to go with the players that are very hyped around here and draft sites but this kid is just a MONSTER and should be there at the end of the second in my opinion because of his level of competition and teams not knowing whether he is a DE or a OLB. Curry is a sack machine who racked up 12 sacks last season and already has 3.0 sacks this season. As many of you might love he is a Jersey boy who grew up in Neptune, near my area, so the hype of him around here combined with his excellent production in college make him a favorite of mine. One of the Jets top needs is a new pass rusher off the edge and Rex would be licking his chops at the possibility of having an intense QB hunter. I think he could even make an impact his rookie season. 3rd round- Ricky Wagner, ROT, Wisconsin Ricky Wagner is another favorite of mine and would be perfect to develop with Callahan for the RT position. Wagner is one hell of a run blocker and has shown alot of dominance last season and this season. His is a Junior so it will be hard to determine if he comes out this year or next but if he does come out next year I think he can be a 2nd to 3rd rounder. In this case he goes in the late 3rd but only because of his youth. He can also provide depth at the LT position as a bonus so drafting him for the Jets would certainly be ideal for depth and starter issues. 4th round- Trenton Robinson, FS , Michigan State I had a hard time finding a late round safety that could be solid for the Jets but kept coming back to Trenton. This kid is very undervalued and IMO has a great amount of potential in the NFL. We need a ballhawk / cover safety to sub in for Smith or Pool or Jimmy and Robinson can be that with time for the Jets if given the right time and development. Last season he had 76 tackles with eight passes broken up and four interceptions last season in his first full season as a starter and already is showing solid play. Many may know him from his fumble against Penn State during the last minutes but im hoping more people remember him for his game play and impressive ability to break up and intercept passes. 5th round- Omar Bolden, CB, Arizona State Boldens value is EXTREMELY hard to tell because he was once stated as a possible 1st to 2nd round pick before tearing his ACL. He will be out all season for 2011 and may come back for 2012 but he is a senior and may want too see how much value he can still get out of his former stock. Bolden is an excellent cover corner who is injury prone but has so much potential. If he can prove he is still at his old self and can develop without any decrease in his former progression than he could be a sleeper and a great #4 corner for the Jets. 6th round- J.R. Sweezy, DE/DT, N.C. State I like what the Jets are doing at the DE spot and think they should keep adding depth. Maybe a guy to help rotate with at the DE and DT spots, maybe to even replace Marcus Dixon. Sweezy is a bull and has great size and athleticism, he has only one full season (last season) of starting but he proved he was one of the better players on the NC State defense, recording 11.5 TFLs, 5.5 sacks, and 50 tackles. If he has another solid season he could go higher than the 6th but for now I think his value is here. 6th round- D.J. Holt, ILB, California I like what the Jets are doing at ILB and would like to keep building on that with the addition here of Holt. I think DJ could come into this defense and play all 4 linebacking positions, hes a great run stuffer, has a mean streak, and is solid in coverage. He can also make an impact on special teams. I wanted to maybe add another position player but I think the progress of LBs for this defense is key and Holt could become a solid player. Maybe even fill in the Bryan Thomas role eventually. Worked hard on this one and ,like I said previously, would love some feedback. Thanks in advance, JTJ.
Ricky Wagner is one of my highest rated players. I believe if he comes out, he'll be a first round pick...and I'd have no problem seeing the Jets select such a talented tackle at the back end of the first. I really don't disagree with any of these picks, but guys like Bolden, Sweezy, and Holt would be overkill in my opinion. I feel like we're doing just fine on the defensive line and ILB for now. We need depth at OLB and WR - we should double dip at both positions if possible.
Wagner was hard for me to value, so hearing you say you value him as a first rounder just solidifies my confusion of where he could go. I knew before even posting it it would be wishful thinking he would be around in the 3rd but if by ANY chance he somehow is there I could see the Jets trading up for him because he could just be that special, but we shall venture to see. I kind of threw in the DE spot because I honestly couldnt think of another position besides TE to draft in the later rounds, and TE is weak this year so Id rather the Jets draft a rotational guy. Do you not like Holt because of his nice game against Fresno? hahaha. But in all seriousness I put Holt in because he could be somewhat of a utility guy for us in the LB core and could maybe even replace Mauga. I agree on double dipping at the position and was going to at WR but I liked Holts value better than a possible #4 or #5 WR. But ill keep it in mind in my next mock.
South Carolina's Antonio Allen is a mid-round safety prospect to keep an eye. He's been a standout player on a pretty stacked defense. Tennessee dismissed safety Janzen Jackson about a month ago. He's now at McNeese State. ...because he enrolled so late, he only has a limited role right now, but he'll eventually start. If this kid straightens himself, he'll be a major steal in 2012's draft.
Wagner stepped right into to Gabe Carimi's spot and that offensive line still looks incredible. Wisconsin's done a great job producing NFL offensive linemen. TE is weak at the top, but we're not looking for a starter. We're looking for an upgrade over Mulligan and Cumberland. Why would you want to replace Josh Mauga? He's done so well for this team, especially on special teams. I don't understand using a late round pick on a utility/backup ILB, when we already have two quality backups on the roster. A backup linebacker is not more valuable than a backup receiver on a team that will have two WRs under contract when the season ends.
Agreed, he could be a Carimi 2.0, his combine has to shine as well but I definitely dont see any doubt that he would be a top 5 tackle prospect in this draft. But value is odd in the draft so come March we all will know obviously. I looked at a few, I liked Rhett Ellison out of USC but I think the Jets are high on Cumberland. I dont "want" to replace him but some healthy competition at LB is never a bad thing. I like Bellore alot and wouldnt want to replace him, just saw Holt as a possible prospect the Jets could look at. Worst case if he was drafted he becomes a depth player at OLB, which I intended for him. (more of a run stuffer than a pass rusher though) I kinda assumed in this draft, although I didnt make it clear, that Buress could be signed back to another 1 year deal to wait until Floyd progressed. Which would mean a core of Holmes, Burress, Floyd, Kerley, Turner. But a later round guy like Marvin Jones or BJ Cunningham could be a solid pick up in the 5-6th round.
Why replace Cumberland Mr. E? Cumberland has immense potential and already has flashed a bit this season. If anything we should be looking to replace Mulligan.
Keller started out as a poor blocker but now he's at the very least adequate in that department. Cumberland's blocking skills may not be up to par (right now anyway) but as a receiver he has huge potential plus he seems to have pretty good YAC ability.
I don't doubt the kid's receiving ability - he was a wideout in college. This is supposedly a run heavy team and we only have run true blocking tight end on the roster. When Matt Mulligan is your team's best blocking tight end, you need a little help in that department.
Keller was also the Jets 1st round pick some year ago, Cumberland essentially does the same job as Keller but less effectively and can't block as well. The Jets could keep him next year as a #3 TE but a blocking te is a big need next year IMO. And with the lack of high prospects in the TE department next year we could get one on the cheap side (6th-7th round.
Gronk is an excellent blocking TE and Hernandez is an adequate blocker. Keller is an okay blocker and Cumberland cant block for his life, see the difference? Thats why theirs work so well, and also having Brady is a plus.
Brady def helps a lot lol I know but that doesn't mean Cumberland can't develop blocking skills. That's up to the coaching staff to determine though. You may be right.
Thanks man, sorry for the late response never saw this post. WR next year needs to be a Top priority maybe even double dipped. We will go into next season with a depth chart of 1. Holmes 2. Kerley 3. Turner 4. Payne That is rough to say the least, we need to sign a FA WR or go for a top WR prospect next year and 2012 is the best year too do so in.
That's assuming we don't sign Plax or one of the bagillion good receivers who are likely to be free agents. I'm also just partial to wanting a FS, been asking for one for like 3 years now haha. But considering how weak the S pool is in this draft, I would be cool with a receiver in the first round, especially if we can grab one of those pass rushers in the 2nd. Oh how I wish we took Morgan Burnett.
He tore his ACL last year early in the season. So far, I haven't seen too much to think he would be a good NFL player, time will tell.
Trenton Robinson could do alot in this defense as a main coverage kind of guy, I could eventually see him as a better Brodney Pool. He'd be a solid safety. I do also agree we need another safety but not until we meet the OT, WR, and OLB needs.
