They have no rings because they had great days??? They had great days and as a result the other 10 guys did not??? I know you are trying to make a point here, but you sure didn't state it clearly.
The basic point is that Darrelle Revis performance is only going to matter if the rest of the defense and defensive schemes are good enough to make it relevant. Unlike a great NT or ILB Revis cannot take the team on his back and carry them to a win on that side of the field. Unlike a great safety Revis can't flow to the ball and dominate that way. I think Darrelle Revis is a great CB and I really love watching him play however I also recognize that his play isn't going to get the Jets to a Super Bowl. it could be a strong contributing factor if the rest of the guys play at a Super Bowl level but it isn't going to get us over the hump. I enjoyed watching the Jets defense more when Rex Ryan was engineering it to make Revis more relevant. If the blitzing is really gone then we're capped because our best player on defense really doesn't matter all that much unless the opposing QB is under so much pressure he can't think straight.
There is only 1 3-0 team in the AFC, and that's the Buffalo Bills. No team is without flaws right now - not New England, not Pittsburgh, not Baltimore, not Houston. There are definitely some concerns, but it's very early.
I don't really think the sky is the limit. We would have seen more from him if the sky was the limit. He was never an elite physical specimen. That said, I never said he couldn't get better going forward. Sanchez is the one guy on this team that can step up in a big way and make this team better. And he has improved this year. But he's still only an average QB right now, I could name 10-15 guys I would rather have this year than Sanchez. He's still young and has the potential to improve, but I'm mostly talking about this season. We are a win now team, right? If Sanchez improves enough, he could make up for the play in the trenches declining. I mean, Greene is young, so I guess he can improve, but runningbacks have shorter shelf lives, and they usually show their talents more quickly. Plaxico can get better as he shakes off the rust, but there's just as good a chance he tweaks a hammy again or something.
I don't want to speak for the OP, but I don't think his original post, or anything he has written thereafter has suggested (1) that he thinks the season is over (2) that the Jets are a shitty team or (3) there is no coming back from these problems. I think he is acknowledging truths and voicing his frustration. My question here is to all the "we're gonna be fine" or "it's just week 3" people. What have you seen (and I'm not asking about stats or record) that makes you confident we are Super Bowl bound this year (because that is why they play and we cheer. We want a Super Bowl team)?
Neither was Tom Brady. What makes a great quarterback is not great physical attributes but smart decision-making.
Good point, but Brady also has a bigger arm than Sanchez to move the ball down the field. And Sanchez has to improve his decision-making. Side note: remember when people were arguing who could throw harder, Brady or Pennington?
Brady increased his throwing power a lot since he joined the league, Sanchez has improved and can continue to do the same.
I agree with you, without a few "lucky" plays we have a losing club right now. But whats promising is that if the offensive line can start to hold it together, and give sanchez some time and our recievers some time to run their routes I think we could see a drastic improvement. And correct me if im wrong but the offensive line as a unit could have suffered the most without an offseason, as they usually take a little while to mesh. Rex will fix the D, and when the Jets go down to Baltimore and beat the Ravens everyone will be talking about taking the division. In all honesty although they are football players their still human....Long flight to the west coast, playing in an extremely hostile environment(some say it doesnt matter but i disagree), After the Jacksonville game which we coasted to a victory, its not uncommon for a team to get complacent and with the Raiders thats what happened. We played an angry Raiders team who was pissed about the Buffalo loss and pissed about the "Hotdog" incident 2 years ago....thats the beauty of football any given sunday any team can compete and win. These guys are seperated by such a small margin talent wise, that sometimes a little "team" motivation, can go a long way. (i.e. New England divisional game after they THRASHED us on NATIONAL TV).
You're absolutely right. And Sanchez has the work ethic to work on that. You can't expect to win every close game. Things happen. It's not like we have an elite quarterback who won't make mistakes. We did win a lot of games last season with a late TD/FG. That doesn't always fly. We're a good team, but without an elite quarterback, it's very tough to be a great team. And without an elite QB or an elite OL, it's tough to even have an average offense. Sure, you can say that if the D made a stop at the end, we could get the ball back and probably tie the game. People said that about the Steelers game. But we didn't. As good as our defense is, when you play elite quarterbacks and elite teams, you don't have much margin for error. And this team as I see it right now, has very little margin for error.
Again, no depth. Offensive line destroys us. Coaching lets us down. Runningbacks can't make anything happen. Quarterback can't make anything happen. Receivers can't get separation. I know Ngata is a stud, and I know Mangold is a stud. But no one offensive lineman should make that much of a difference. Good teams, like the Jets last year, can lose a Woody (one of the best RTs in the league) and still function.
How do you expect the RBs and our QB to do anything behind an offensive line that's "destroying us" ??? A center makes a difference. ...especially when the drop-off is best in the league to a UDFA that wasn't even on our camp roster. Making line calls is incredibly important. You aren't thinking about the mental aspect of the position.
I put the blame far more on the OL than anything else. That's for damn sure. But it's not like we're the only team with a bad OL. Sanchez is 10-29 passing, virtually all on routes within 8 yards of the LOS. He's not blameless.
Our pass plays are a joke. Even when a receiver makes a catch it's with one or more defenders draped all over him. How hard is it to design a play where somebody actually gets open? It seems our receivers always run 4 routes: 1. Quick screen 2. 5 yard slant 3. Corner fade / jump ball 4. Run 10 yards and turn around Schotty isn't cut out to coach peewee football. But hey, maybe it's not coaching, just a lack of execution. Put mangold back in there, and this offense will be unstoppable.
All of these quick routes that Schottenheimer likes to use are based on timing. ...and Sanchez doesn't have time. The timing routes aren't working because he's having to get rid of the ball too quickly. Everything is thrown off because of the piss poor blocking. The entire offense is terrible, but the problems with execution are starting up front. The main problem is the scheme which hasn't been adjusted at all.
Defense played well today...Kind of hard to win games when your offense goes and gives up 3 return TD's. As always, our offense will continue to be our downfall. The JETS offensively were never in this game. The Ravens decided to get too greedy trying to throw and they paid the price for that. Rex should pull Sanchez, this game is lost. I'd hate to see our QB get hurt in a game which is a lost cause.
Oline depth has killed them, with the inury to Turner and Mangold. The O and D schemes need a little tweaking. They give up far too many 3d and long conversions because they just don't have the athletes at OLB and our blitzes rarely fool anyone any more. The Offense is a little smattering of everything done half-ass. The line doesn't run block or pass block well, and the inability to sustain drives in rhythm limits the carries the RBs get. Maybe a couple of losses in a row will get this team's head on straight-- limit the talking and start practicing and watching more film. 2 games in a row this team was physically dominated.
The blame scale 1. OL 2. Scheme 3. Sanchez I'm just saying Sanchez should be on it. He's looked shellshocked this game. He has reason to be, but even when he's had time, he isn't making great throws. The offensive line is going to lead to the downfall of this team. The rest of the team isn't good enough to make up for it. It will be better with Mangold, and against lesser opponents, but to what extent?
That's going to happen. He's obviously rattled because he's been getting lit up. There's no rhythm to this offense. There rarely is. I'm one of the biggest Mark Sanchez supporters on this site, but he will fail if this keeps up... I said it in the game thread and I'll say it again: If these problems aren't fixed, we will have this decade's version of David Carr as our quarterback. There's absolutely no possible way Sanchez can progress in a quick pass scheme behind a shitty offensive line. Even when Nick Mangold returns, the right side of our offensive line will still be shaky
Whatever magic this team had the past few seasons is completely gone. The oline is horrific, Sanchez has regressed. Our WR corps was def better last season. We need a new approach on offense, Schottys play calling is so predictable and boring. I don't think Greene will ever turn into a real number 1 running back.
