I said it in the game thread and I'll say it again... Drew Brees forces throws like that all the damn time. Sanchez is trying to do too much.
I'm more okay with a QB making a good decision and missing and getting picked than a QB misreading the defense or trying to make a play he cannot make, and in that sense Sanchez still has a lot of room to grow, but he's definitely showing improvement over previous years - mistakes are less routine and more the aberration.
Sanchez is improving, but a shaky o-line does not help matters. Of course he will still be liable to throw picks. Not everyone is Brady/Rodgers. Also, does anyone else think that since we clearly are not going to be a ground and pound team that we should just go no huddle the whole time a la the Colts?
get lost. peyton manning gets abused for faulty play, and he is one of the greatest of all time. the fucking QB is running for his life 50% of each play. you should be kissing his god damn ass. he is running for his life, and playing twice as good as he has ever played. jets gave up 200 yards rushing, shut up.
The difference between this year and last is that Sanchez is under constant pressure this year. His completion percentage is up because he's being forced to dump the ball off a lot more than he's done in the past because the downfield routes are still developing when he has to throw the ball. The Int's are happening because he's forcing the ball downfield when he gets long enough to actually throw balls at people 15+ yards down the field. If you'd told me that Sanchez would be completing 63% of his passes with a QB rating over 90 after 3 games I'd have figured he was really progressing well. Instead the jump in numbers is because he's throwing 80% of his passes 15 yards or less and nearly two thirds of them under 10 yards.
That type of line may work in fantasy football but in real football him throwing that pick was a back breaker. LT bailed him out on a few occasions and some dumb Raider penalties helped him in others. On the 4th and 2 I must have been the only person who thought he threw it behind the target and Mason had to make an amazing one handed catch to keep another drive alive. He constantly throws the ball to the wrong spot and he forces things way too much. It's year 3 and he still doesn't understand he's not playing against Washington State anymore and these guys are going to eat him up when he makes dumb decisions. Now I'm smart enough to understand that it's not all his fault but for a guy we all myself included have anointed as the Sanchize we can't baby him anymore and treat him like he didn't fuck up. He did and that pick was the turning point. Who knows maybe the Raiders win anyway but I like my odds better up 20-7 or 24-7. Quite honestly we left so many points on the board it's terrible.
Reading this gave me a tremendous sense of deja vu going back to about 1978 and Richard Todd. By the time he got things together and the Jets were ready to compete he had no mistakes left in the bank with the fans and so he wound up run out of town. Greg McElroy would be the Matt Robinson in that scenario. God I hope that doesn't happen again because the Sack Exchange would have won a Super Bowl with Todd eventually but he was already cooked by the time they really got established.
No, we shouldn't be in no huddle all the time. We're still a defense-first team, which means we do want to do well in time of possession and play lower scoring games as a whole. However, I do like sprinkling it in more. Sanchez does well in it, and we're clearly moving towards a passing offense anyway. But our QB and our talent doesn't dictate doing it all the time.
Is he never supposed to make a mistake again? all QBs make dumb mistakes now and then, I am disappointed in his play so far this year. I expected a nice step forward but insetad it appears he has taken a step back(his #s are much better but he was much better a year ago). I can live w/ a bad decision now and then, that didn't cost us the game yesterday. he had many more poor decisions that didn't result in INTs that hurt us even more.
As much as I hate the term, we drafted a gunslinger. He's going to throw the ball downfield in situations he shouldn't because he believes in his arm. I wish he would learn to throw it away more often and I'm sure that is the mantra for the CS right now but I honestly don't see that sticking. As for the OLine playing like shit, I'm not buying it as an excuse for these INTS. There was absolutely nothing going on in the play for yesterday's pick but he fired it in anyway. The INT to Sean Lee wasn't rushed, Sanchez just didn't see him. I don't remember the first one against the Jaguars but the second one was a bad guess without pressure. The OLine's poor performance has led to a lot of Sanchez's incompletions but his picks so far are on him.
Nope I am not blaming the oline for the int's. They were dumb mistakes and or getting baited by different coverages, he should have recognized. However, in the meat of the game yesterday, meaning late 2nd and entire 3 quarters, he was getting the cr@p (@work) knocked out of him. That is where the Jets lost the game with bad defense and bad protection. You let a team hang around and that is what happens. So the lack of offense here comes down to poor protection. Sanchez was running for his life for that 20 minute stretch, it was awful. At least we know he is tough.
Yes. FWIW, this team has been waiting for Offense for 3 years. Now that we have it the defense has shit the bed 2 weeks out of 3. Thank God for Tony Romo.
I understand your point, but the problem with it is that the INT kept the Raiders in the game, allowed them to put more D effort into rushing Sanchez, and before the end of the first half allowed them on O to keep to the running game. The fact that the Jets' D sucked, the problems with the OL, do not change the following: The INT decision was stupid. For the down, the location on the field, no receivers being open, it was a stupid, idiotic throw. The OL was not a factor in that play. Given the field location and the momentum the Jets had, Sanchez effectively left points on the field. Sanchez was not otherwise having a great game, despite the stats. Sometimes the stats lie. He made several poor throws, and was saved on a crucial third down pass by Mason's excellent catch. Another problem not spoken to here I dont think is that as he goes through his progressions, he's not somehow finding his wideouts. Two targets to Holmes the whole game? The Raiders can't cover Burress, and Sanchez can only find him a few times? His stats were inflated by some great runs after the catch, particularly LT's big play. But if you watched the game, and I am not saying the loss was all on MS, hardly, he had a chance to throw that pass away, keep the Jets deep in Oakland territory, and he made an idiotic pass. We were looking to see him show his third year improvement in 2011. So far he has not shown it.
yes, it was an awful decision on that throw ... but saying a 3rd year qb should never make bad decisions is not based in truth josh freeman did the same shit in nearly the exact same situation in the endzone ... flacco made some awful decisions last week, matt ryan made some as well in his first game and yesterday, and these guys are in their fourth year
Maybe for the first time I hated Mark for a throw and I liked to feel that way. Because despite how much I hated that stupid throw it didn't make me change one bit my mind that he's the right guy for the job. If I was his coach/boss it would be a situation where I'd be screaming at him calling him an idiot for doing that, yet never crossing my mind the idea of "maybe we'll need to find someone else in the next couple of years" or "if this guy doesn't improve we're in trouble". I agree with junc that while his numbers are better it doesn't mean that he's playing better, but I do believe that improving those numbers was a needed step in the right direction. Besides that throw (nothing to blame in there to the oline), he did what he could considering the lack of oline in the game.
