Did you seriously go on ProFootballReference and research all games by the Jets to find the worst DB performances in the past hour?

    Damn. That's pretty creepy.

I just signed on within the past 10 minutes.

What research would I possibly be looking at?

Finally, if you were a big Jets fan you would remember stuff like this I would think.

    Let me ask you again.

What research would I possibly be looking up?

This is not something I pulled out of a webpage or a book in an "hour" as you led yourself to believe. Go do an advanced search with "Cakes" and "Mickens". You'll find at least one old post from me on this topic.

    Sheesh.

    Why do I bother sometimes?

Cakes memory is pretty impressive, I doubt he did lots of research in the last hour.

But on topic, I seriously doubt its the worst a CB has played for us. David Barret had to have at least 3 penalties a few years back, and given up a few big plays in the same day.

Cromartie's third penalty was iffy. Like Phil Simms, I didn't see any violation on the play. The fumble on the kickoff was what turned this into a particularly rotten day by Cromartie. Without that fumble, it probably would not be looked at as being in the running for worst day ever by a Jets CB. (If somebody wants to point out that Cromartie was a kickoff returner on the play and not a cornerback and somebody wants to separate the two and be anal about it, then so be it.)

I watched the game at my parents' house. I had a half hour drive home. I have a young son. Trust me, I didn't have time for any research tonight. I don't even know how to go about research on this matter. What would you look up, exactly?

He's the most compelling player in the league, no doubt.

How many completions did Cromartie actually give up for how many yards? How many TD passes were scored on him? (hint - none). A bad day for a CB is when he repeatedly gets burned. The Raiders did not win this game by passing on Cromartie. He had four penalties and a fumble on a kick return. The first PI penalty contributed to the opening TD drive, but after the penalty the Raiders still drove 30 yards to score a TD. The other three penalties had no bearing on any scoring by the Raiders.

Yes the fumble hurt badly, but that was not Cromartie as a CB. There have been dozens of games where Jets DBs had far worse games than this.

This game was lost because the Jets gave up 234 yards rushing and did not force any turnovers. They lost because the OL is not playing well and the running game is not up to par. They lost because Schotty's play calling sucks. Period. Cromartie is an easy scapegoat, but those who blame him are wrong.

All of his penalties were on 2nd & long. All negated what would be 3rd & long. Two occurred on drives that lead to TDs The McFadden 70 yard run occurred two plays after his holding penalty deep in Oakland territory. Take away his penalties on the TD drives and it is very likely they dont score. His ill-advised run out of the end zone set the defense back and reeling on its heels, very susceptible to the next running play, where Oakland took it down to the one.

So yes, I think you could say that his play was either directly or indirectly responsible for almost 100 of the 243 rushing yards

You are correct that there is much blame to go around, but CRomarie is not a scapegoat. Take away his two penalties on the Oakland TD drives and the game changes. If he doesn't fumble on the kick-off, I believe the Jets would've found a way to win.

If you want to say that someone was unfairly scapegoated, its SAnchez

You want to go back a decade or two, who else remembers Tony Stargell?

He started day one as a rookie and stunk worse than any DB I ever saw.

The penalty before the McFadden TD was not a penalty. The fumble was bad, but , again, he was not playing CB at the time.

The official called the penalty on him, based upon the way he was playing. Maybe it was a bad call, but it was still called on him. He attempted the ill-advised kick-off return to counter-act his bad play as a DB, so I believe its all related and adds up to the most spectacularly bad day a Jets DB has ever had

BTW, I"M surprised no one has brought up Donald Dykes yet!
