To be accurate though, I can think of one better time to be a Jets fan.

No doubt. This truly is the golden age for long time Jets fans. My old man saw them win the SB, and while that feeling (ultimate underdog) probably will not be duplicated, even he says this is the most fun its ever been being a fan for an extended period of time.

This will be the 2nd time in franchise history that they make the playoffs 3 consecutive wins. That says enough about our head coach.

Did you mean 3 consectutive years? Because this would be the 1st time in franchise history......:jets:

Walsh became the 49's head coach in '79 & won the superbowl in '81...this is Rex's 3rd yr, hopefully he finds the same success Walsh did.

Of course there has been a better time, January 12, 1969..that feeling was nothing short of euphoric.

    Just a correction to note-
Cowher won a Super Bowl in his 14th season coaching the Steelers.

Walsh is a great example. The franchise was a mess on and off the field when Walsh was hired.

Jim Schwartz, who I liked as a possibility to replace Eric Mangini after the '08 season, is starting to turn around the Lions. As you know, they were a bigger mess than were the Jets when Ryan took over.

Mike Holmgren did a great job right away with the Packers. They had been mediocre under Starr in the 1980s. Then Gregg had a couple mediocre years and then the team started to suck. Then Infante got the job and he blew, although they did have that one freaky 10-6 season with a bunch of last minute victories. When Holmgren took over in 1992, the team became an instant winner.

It doesn't hurt your resume when you get a Brett Favre & Reggie White on your team.

White was not on Holmgren's first Green Bay team.

You could play this game with every head coach.

It didn't hurt Ryan that he had Revis and Harris.

...And Holmgren was the OC under Bill Walsh before he took the Green Bay gig.

A lot of great head coaches were assistants in SF.

I consider myself extremely lucky that I started following the Jets in Mangini's last season... I mean, I have never experienced a losing record... however I pride myself of actually becoming a Jet fan the off-season after a 4-12 season...

There is something about being a true fan that causes you to stick with the team through thick and thin. I don't know what it is. I sure as hell don't know why. It sure as hell would be easier to be some crazy bandwagon Pats fan. Why we endure the torture to follow this team is beyond me. But we sure do, and i know that no matter what, 20 years from now, several of us will still be here, Jets fans bound together by the craziness that we were somehow born with.

I remember in the infancy of the board, back in 03 when I first joined up how optimism was flying high following the 2002 miracle. Then Chad shattered his wrist, and down we spiraled. In 04 we came back ready to beat Pitt for a shot at an AFC title. Doug Brien came along and stabbed us in the heart. 05 was just unbearable. 06 we pulled it back together under Mangini somehow he got us to 10 wins with literally no talent what so ever. our cupbards were bare-bones and it showed in 2007. Then in 08 we were all over the back pages, spending like crazy in FA, drafting Gholston and Keller in round 1, trading for Favre, cutting chad and letting him become a Lol'phin. Then the collapse to end 2008 was just terrible to watch, but looking back, it literally is the most important thing that ever happend to this franchise, since Joe Namath was drafted. But despite the crazy ups and downs of the decade, (removing 1968 from the equation) it has been the best decade of sustained success for this franchise in it history. That said I fully expect the 10's to surpass the 00's simply because we have a great coach, and a budding QB who is ready to take the next step and lead us to where we all want to go.

It's been a rollercoaster decade here on the gang green. Despite all the hell us Jets Fans have been through, the day we finally break through for that long anticipated ring, the joyous feelings we will experience will only be incredibly enhanced for what we have felt. especially the older fans who had to suffer through the 70's, the fake-spike, the mud bowl, 1996, and so many other SOJ moments. The second the clock strikes 00:00 and the Jets are superbowl champions, I can't even speculate as to the emotions that will flow through everyone.

I'm young, so I barely remember the years we were the shittiest of shit in the league, the Kotite years. All I remember is being good one year, being shit the next. Thank you Chad Pennington and Vinny Testaverde. Now, I'm confident that in ten years, we'll have at least two Lombardis.

The feeling of confidence builds with every great win (most recently Dallas) but as a Jets fan who got success early and then had over 40 years of disappointment, I'm still a little cautious. Its great to see the younger posters, who are growing up with a winning culture

as long as the jets continue to make the playoffs I'm happy. just give us a chance. it's really difficult to get on a run and win the SB. andy reid has still yet to win a SB. is it because he's a bad coach? should he fired? no and no. what he's doing is working and has been working in philly for a decade. they're a good football team almost every year. when you're that good for so long odds are you're eventually going to break through.

This post kind of reflects how I feel about the OP, fwiw. The point I quibble with is it doesn't necessarily follow that a high level of consistent success, like for the Eagles, means such a team will "eventually" break through. The Eagles in fact are a case in point so far showing that is not necessarily the case. I vividlly remember, because the result was the hated Pats won that SB, how McNabb choked away the game when they finally made it. And of course that was not the first time Philly made it to the SB and lost. So there's that.

As far as the Jets are concerned, though, and adding the additional quibble that the very best time to be one had to be when they won SB III, that I kind of agree with the OP. Winning the SB is something I think we all think is due the Jets, if not this year, at some point very soon. They have the players, the HC, the organization, to do so. Ryan in particular inspires confidence. But it's really not just about winning the SB. As a fan, watching games week in week out through the season, following a team that wins more often than not is, compared to the opposite, a distinct pleasure. And making it to the playoffs, and winning a few there the last two seasons, is also great.

So it's not all about winning the SB, even if I think we all pretty much feel that will be a necessary part at some point of feeling this is really THE golden era. Until that happens, let's call it the silver era.
