i'm not arguing with you, junc....i politely asked you not to turn this thread into one of your crusades. There is absolutely nothing wrong with presenting the other side of an argument....but you tend to let your ego get in the way most times, which turns into whining about everyone attacking you. So again, I'm not pointing any fingers....just be advised, that this thread better not turn into one of your infamous clusterfucks. EDIT: in fact, this is my last post on this matter. If you have any problem with this junc, you can send me a PM.
The reality is the Jets have one SB team. Every Jets player who didn't play on that team or is in the HOF becomes a debatable entry into the ring of fame for that reason. There have been a handful of Jets players who have been really great over the course of an entire career or even for a small flash of time. Not to discount longevity but Toon was simply an NFL show stopper. He was a special talent. Walker was a real good player and might have had a better career, Toon made catches that still stick in my mind and always will. The guy was obviously the best player on the field for much of his healthy career.
I brought that up in an earlier post. Walker drop a ton of passes in his rookie year, it was bad. After a couple of seasons he wasn't known for dropping passes. It's just too bad some people still hold it against him for his entire career. Revis was mediocre year one...should I hold it against him???
People should try to catch a pass 20 yards downfield(his career average) with a patch covering one eye to see how easy it is. Total loss of depth perception with one eye yet his career was great. He should be there and there is no way Toon should be there ahead of him.
Walker will get in this "puppet show" ROF, no doubt. I was just trying to support my POV that the Jet's organization or whatever dumb ass committee made an error. All the players in this ROF are deserving, IMO, the one's that enter first should be more deserving.
Don't compare a lock HOFer to Wesley Walker. I saw it w/ my eyes as a kid, Wesley dropped a ton of passes. It has been reinfored through the years rewatching the old games on tape/dvd. Nothing against Wesley, I appreciate him and I don't disagree that he may deserve to go in before Toon(b/c I do think longevity counts) but I don't think it is a slam dunk. As far as winning, the win % in years they played was similar. Walker: 92-104-2, 47% Toon: 57-69-1, 45%
I wasn't comparing Revis HOF play to WW. Reread my post. I was comparing year one of both players. You were a little too young to remember Walker's early career, playing with Hot Wheels and getting your diaper changed. So don't question me, I've seen Walker's entire career.....he didn't drop many passes in the 80's....he got past it. Your reputation to be the contrarian in a thread is well documented......arguing with you is like pissing in the wind. It's sad you always have to be right.
I was too young to see him in the 70s but I watched him from 81 until the end and I have a ton of game son tape so not only did I watch them at the time but what I watched was reinforced as an adult. Wesley didn't have great hands just like Pat Leahy wasn't a great K. don't deflect please. Stick to the topic, I didn't proclaim I was right but your insecurity w/ this issue is making you deflect away from what I have actually written.
Like I said "It's sad you always have to be right". I 'm glad I have a life I don't commit my entire existence agruing on messageboards. It's funny, I get along with 98% of the people in this community......you can't say the same. You need to look yourself in the mirror, but you will never change.
Where am I proclaiming to be right? Good for you that you have a life, sucks for me I don't(good job as a mod insulting posters, I'm sure high traffic isn't something Petro wants on the board) Congrats on your internet friends:up: your internet wife and family must be very impressed.
at some point he will. I just don't want to see too many players honored. There shoul be something special about this and it should only be our top players in team history.
Toon was a very good receiver but putting him in ahead of Walker is controversial to say the least. The Jets have been very fortunate to have outstanding WRs over the years, not to mention tight ends. You are forgetting HOF WR Don Maynard. Not only were Walker and Sauer up there with Toon but if you go back to the Titans days we also had Art Powell. Although most of his stats were with the Raiders he did an outstanding job as a Titan. With the exception of Walker and Toon the other guys were before my time so it is hard to make comparisons aside from the stats. Keyshawn and Holmes are no slouches either.
Toon had every skill you could possibly want in a WR, he just didn't last long enough. I've never seen a more gifted all around WR in my life. Before the concussions, around the late 80s, Toon and Jerry Rice were considered the NFL's two elite WRs, that's good company and for those who didn't see him tells you all you need to know.
I feel very strongly that the ROH should be for the best of the best. I feel equally strongly that Gastineau belongs in that group. If Favre doesn't take a dive he still has the all time single season sack record. I believe that he and Klecko are the only tandem to earn 20+ sacks each in the same season. The New York Sack Exchange is the best thing to happen to this team since SB III.
I think this kinda sums it up. At his best, Toon was considered one of the 2 best WR's in the sport. Walker, who I love, was never considered that. That being said, anyone who watches old Jet games on DVD, Walker is in on so so many of their big plays throughout the years. He just got hurt alot.
Again you can make a strong argument that the ring of fame should be reserved for HOF players or at the very least very good players from Championship teams. Based on that criteria, Namath and Maynard belong and maybe Hill and Philbin. Obviously since that criteria isn't being used it all becomes very subjective. More than subjective, the organization has a strong reason to bias this in favor of the current fan base, most of whom don't go back past the mid 80's team at best. Sauer in a short career has great stats and a ring you could make a very strong argument that he belongs ahead of both Toon and Walker. Lots of people think Klecko was the best modern day player. Others believe it was Martin. I could make an argument for Mawae? I honestly thought Toon was over all one of the 2 or 3 most exciting players the Jets ever had and for a brief moment the best WR we ever had and I have seen all of them. From a pure football talent he was a freak and unlike Edwards cought the ball. I'm biased I loved the guy. I still don't see how WW belongs. Toon is also a player who most of the old timers and the new Jets fans got a chance to see. I personally think he was a talent at a different level than almost every Jets player I have seen. I think a lot of people who saw him were blown away by some of his catches. He simply has more of an impact on memory, great players do that to you.
