The second pick was Sanchez. The read on that play should have been the hips of the defender covering 2 targets. He made up his mind early where he THOUGHT the defender would be. He should have looked at him. He was inside, the ball should have gone outside.
I personally think the play design allows for turnovers to happen, because its just a dangerous play. Sanchez sees 3 WR to his left and his to pick the right one to throw to? I don't see the elite QBs having to make that decision, so why Sanchez? It did work, but if the throw isn't perfect to mason, the safety will close in and knock it down. Its just a bad play design, IMO. It worked against JAX, but its not a play I see working against teams with good secondaries. It was the same with Leigh Bodden's pick 6 in 09 - that had a very similar play design. And Sanchez to me still has issues throwing to his left.
Saw this on the side bar, good article. http://www.ganggreennation.com/2011/9/20/2439230/mangolds-injury-just-what-the-doctor-ordered
Good points in that article. But that's why I've called Schotty the anti-Rex, because he let's the defense dictate the offense's plan of action, not the other way around. That's a mangini trait that I wanted buried and dead, but of course it lingers within the offense. It still aggravates me.
I don't disagree with you here. I'm not just talking about Sanchez. I'm talking about the offense, which makes a lot of mental gaffes, with the exceptions of Brick, Mangold and LT. Holmes usually runs great, crisp routes. But there are times it's either that he doesn't or Mark is mentally crippled because he throws to an area completely off from where Holmes is. That's what I mean by precision like the Pats. The reason their offense runs so well is because the receivers are always where Brady throws the ball. It's all precision, which is what Scottenheimer's offense requires. You don't need to be exceptional, you just need to be completely focused. I don't disagree here either. Schotty calls some bad plays, but it's still on Sanchez to throw the balls. No play call absolves the QB of throwing into double-coverage if the ball gets picked. It definitely is on Schotty to make better calls, but it's on Mark to be smarter when he throws it. Correct. I don't particularly disagree here either, though I think it's more Sanchez changing the play at the line than what Schotty is calling. This is where I wish Rex would step in and say "Guys, I get you want to fool the defense on every play by adjusting to coverage, but sometimes, you gotta just run the play you want to run and challenge the defense to stop you!" -------------- Again, I know I come off as a rabid Schottenheimer homer, but I'm not. I go crazy during games and curse him left and right. My point is though, I don't remember the last time we had anywhere near as an effective offensive scheme (during the Vinny years?) and I just think it's smarter to stick with a system that really does work when it's on than take a chance on the next Heimerdinger. The issue is execution. It doesn't matter who is calling plays, or what those plays are, if the players aren't making the most of opportunities, which is what our true base problem is.
I don't recall complaining about it yet this week, but you know that was an awful read by Sanchez. Disheartening.
"relying on the greatness of Mangold has, in part, created some bad habits. His injury will force the team to change those bad habits, habits that will keep them from getting to the Big Show. A couple of weeks without Nick could be just what the doctor ordered for this offense. " What a stupid comment. Mangold's being out has the potential to put the team behind in the standngs, and could affect the playoff seedings. NOT what hte doctor ordered...
I agree with all of this, just wanted to say that. Far more sympathetic to Schottenheimer than the average poster here.
Of course it does, but the whole point is that maybe, just maybe, brainless Schottenheimer will break his bad habits out of necessity and it could hopefully have a positive effect going forward. Of course there's always the idea that changes are made til Mangold comes back and then it goes back to normal.
Lets go with play action, tosses, dinks, dunks, and eat a vanilla ice cream at the same time. Fucking hate this guy's soft offense
Ray Lucas killing Schotty with the same question we ask here every single week - why does Schotty not let Sanchez run the hurry-up other than at the end of games?
Banged up offensive line. Sanchez can't stand in the pocket for long pass plays to develop. Yet this offense puts up 24 points. Raiders end the game with 34 points with no major injuries on D or special teams .... Shotty blew this game.
Why doesn't Ray Lucas direct that question @ Rex?? Why the hell doesn't anybody hold Rex accountable for this stuff. Rex is not gonna let Sanchez go no huddle for the entire game & not give the defense proper rest.
I use to be relatively ambivilant about Shotty, but I don't think it's a coincidence we're able to run down the field during the no-huddle, yet otherwise, the offense is completely incompetent. That seems like total proof that Schottenheimer needs to go.
