I started off with half a joke, but: 1. If Rex called those putrid offensive plays, then he is to blame. I really mean that. 2. He MUST know how lack of time on the play clock affects the offense detrimentally - his defense feasts upon that, and forces that to happen by disguising the assignments and giving exotic, multiple looks. If he allows his OC to keep on doing this bullshit while knowing the effect himself (all too well, if I might add) then he is not doing his job. I mean that too.
That's just a stupid post. I don't even want to respond to it, but it's not Woody's job to mingle in everyday football affairs. It's not even Tanny's. The buck stops with the head coach. If he doesn't have enough talent, then Tannenbaum gets blame. People just give Rex a free pass like he has nothing to do with the offense. It's his team, he can do what he wants with it. If he wants Schottenheimer to do things differently, he has the power to do whatever the hell he wants. I love Rex, but if he gives full autonomy to Schotty and that's what he does, and we have the same problems year after year, then it's partly on him, too. If Sanchez played better, it wouldn't matter nearly as much what plays were called.
Well. All in all, while history of Schotty's mediocrity goes back to the days of Mangini, I'll lay it off for a while - bitching about the past is not going to improve anything after all. I do agree with your sentiment here, in that Jets we know these days bears the character of Rex Ryan - and offense is no exception. If Ryan is trying to enforce his identity to the detriment of his team (when the offense could do much better by adapting to the weakness of the opponent) then he must share the blame too. (But then where have I heard that week-to-week basis bullshit before...) Maybe, this team is not talented enough. Maybe this offense cannot just impose their will on the defenses no matter what the defense brings. Stark difference from Patriots offense - they don't care what kind of stuff you bring. They just do their thing and the opposing defense knows it, still unable to stop. I will not go to "We must adapt to the weakness of the opposing team" routine - we've been there before, and those darksiders then cried out "We lack IDENTITY!" That's an easy way out without offering any advice or opinion for improvement. (a.k.a. weaseling out) I like that the team is trying to play smashmouth football (I like that brand of football a lot as well.) Just, it's frustrating to watch the team not making any adjustment and watching Greene crashing himself into the wall of bodies - like I said, I don't think going away from the Ground-and-Pound root is a sensible idea, which is why I suggested calling more screen pass plays. I strongly believe that Jets must use I formation - normal I, Strong, Weak etc - as the base formation. If that happens, then the sensible solutions to overly aggressive defense are 1. hard counts (which Sanchez didn't use nearly enough - if at all, he didn't get any 1st down out of the penalties) and 2. Screen passes. Dallas offense didn't mind using 3 screen passes in one drive - why should Jets shun away from it? What then frustrated me was, if things are this clear to a layman like myself, why isn't Schotty (or Rex for that matter) doing anything to adjust to the defense? If it is Rex just holding onto his gun, then he shouldn't get a free pass either. At least I am not seeing 3rd and goal shotgun at 2 yard line, so that's a major improvement. (Maybe that WAS Mangini's bullshit after all.)
My post was a joke. I was pointing out that if you're going to state that Schotty bears the majority of blame (correctly) in things regarding offensive playcalling/gameplan in one sentence while rolling the shit UPhill in the next sentence (shocking that all successful organizations do the opposite)...why bother stopping with Rex? Rex inherited Schotty. You/we are unaware of anything behind the scenes. There was almost certainly some amount of pressure placed on Rex to retain Schotty initially. BS is part of the new regime. The FO likes the new regime and so do we. The new regime also drafted Gholston. Schotty is no Gholston but mistakes can happen. This is the year for BS to prove that he's not middling at best, and if he can't I give up on him. I'm sure the FO/Rex will be taking a hard look at other options if that occurs. I think Rex is fully prepared to air the ball out when the time is right. The league is designed to be a passing league today and Rex clearly understands the value of a strong passing attack. He traded up for Sanchez and has put a lot of effort into bringing in consistent WR talent. When the offense is ready, it should and will be run like every other dominant offense in the NFL. Doesn't mean we can't still play physical hard-nosed football while doing it. If Schotty isn't the guy that can make it happen, Rex bears little to no responsibility until he brings in a new guy of his own choosing and our ability to produce points early still sucks. Sanchez bears little to no responsibility until he's fully mature and has proven himself to be middling at best with a new OC. This will never happen because it's clear Sanchez is going to be somewhere between good and elite to anybody with eyes by now. Stop getting ahead of yourself/selves.
My impression is that Sanchez is not good in screen pass plays. If I were the OC and that were the case, I wouldn't call too many, either, unless and until MS shows he can make that play with any consistency.
A "Next Level" statistical analysis, courtesy of ESPN Stats and Information: MARK SANCHEZ: PASSING 10 YARDS OR FEWER 18-for-27 ... 66.7% ... 166 yards ... 1 TD ... 0 INT ... 95.6 rating Analysis: In terms of accuracy, a significant improvement from last year. SANCHEZ: PASSING 11 to 20 YARDS 6-for-13 ... 46.2% ... 117 yards ... 0 TD ... 1 INT ... 46.0 rating Analysis: Interception by Sean Lee ruined his rating. SANCHEZ: PASSING OUTSIDE THE POCKET 3-for-5 ... 60% ... 40 yards ... 1 TD ... 0 INT ... 125.0 rating Analysis: Confirms that Sanchez is better when on the move. SANCHEZ: PLAY-ACTION PASSING 5-for-6 ... 83.3% ... 98 yards ... 1 TD ... 0 INT ... 158.3 rating Analysis: A perfect rating. Doesn't really apply to your screen play impression but PA passes are often screen plays too. More on the D here- http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/je...ers?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
i think he meant coming into this game. for every drop ive seen a back have from Sanchez theres a few where he doesnt allow time for the play to setup or is leading them on quick throws in the wrong direction. quick recipe for INT's. Sanchez is pretty money with play actions. just wish we could get more YPA on those. I dont think Schotty is amazing by any means but people sweep Sanchez development under the carpet like Schotty is pissing away Peyton Manning.
Because Rex is a defensive guy and doesn't pretend to know offense. So he puts faith in schottenheimer and probably buys most of his bullshit because he can't really argue otherwise
I would think that a defensive guy like Rex could look at an offensive scheme and say "holy shit this will be easy for a defense to stop." I doubt you become a great defensive coach without someunderstanding of offense. I think the blame Rex stuff has gone a bit too far though. I would say Rex is a very good coach and a guy that woody and Tanny respect and listen to. If he was saying that schotty sucks behind the scenes he would be gone. All Rex has ever done is say schotty can coach for him as long as he wants.
All he has ever said is that anyone bum or otherwise that he is responsible for is the greatest thing since sliced bread until he turns around and axes them. It's a management style. He isn't axing a guy off of 2 straight AFC championships. We'll know a lot more after this season/offseason.
So...if you have talented players that execute the plays...you win? Good to know. You blame Mark Sanchez letting everyone sitting on their couches, much less the defenders, know where he's going to throw the ball on his coach?! Did you really spend the time to type that? Yes, it's clearly suffocating for these guys to work in this offense. Which is probably the #1 reason that Mason said he thought this team would put 40 on the board every game. Well, except that Rex specifically said no one on defense got a gameball because they all underperformed. This post is just unbelieveable in its ability to be hypocritical. The offense should be held to the same standard as the defense? Then the defense should be getting ripped right now too because they didn't exactly have a great game. (Though FTR, I think Rex is wrong. Bart Scott played his ass off on Sunday and deserved a game ball.) Oh stop with the facts. We all know those have no place in an internet argument! Yeah, heaven forbid someone say that Rex or Sanchez might not be perfect. It's got to be Schotty who is an idiot. Personally, while the haters point at his father as the reason he has a job in the NFL, I blame his last name for the treatment he gets by this fanbase. It makes me laugh that everyone blames Schotty alone for how Ware was covered. Does everyone think Bill Callahan tried to speak up in meetings during the week and was told to "STFU old man" by Schottenheimer? Chances are, he said "I think Hunter can block well enough that you don't need to double up." But again, everyone here knows what happens behind closed doors in Florham Park. 1) I wouldn't blame Rex, but I'd sure point a finger at Callahan. 2) Okay. So no props to Dallas? Then no props whenever the Jets defense stops anyone at midfield ever again either. 3) Are you serious? Did you watch the game? I did. And I pay attention to the play clock because it's probably the thing I'm most critical of for our offense. Sunday was the best I've seen it since Sanchez became the QB in terms of getting plays off before getting down below 3 seconds. Dallas, on the other hand, had a lot of plays barely get off before 0:00. But see whatever you want to see. Like I said above, I pay attention. You're correct. We had lots of time to spare. I only remember one time where I thought we might get a delay of game flag. That's not to say the clock never got into low single-digits, but it never looked like it has in the past under Mark. This. This freaking post. Perfectly said. (FTR, the 2nd paragraph is the point people such as myself are trying to make. It's not like this all Rex's fault, but Rex clearly isn't telling Tanny/Woody, "Look, I like Brian, but the guy's a toolbox. Dump him and promote Bill.")
He certainly likes to hype up guys but when he went out of his way in his book to say schotty could coach his offense as long as he wants I bought it. There was really no reason for him to bring up that point if he didn't want to. Now if after this year schotty doesn't take a head coaching job and the jets don't bring him back that would tell a different story.
This is what it comes down to. None of us know what is going to happen by next year. If the offense produces this year I'll be thrilled to see him stay. If it doesn't, I'll be thrilled to watch him go. You can put blame wherever you want. Sanchez held us back the last 2 years in the regular season, not just in his play but in that the playcalls were made to handcuff him by design (with good reason). I think Sanchez is ready to be a solid NFL qb this year, if I'm right we should put up well above average production with the talent around him. I'm optimistic that this will end up happening, but if it doesn't that is when the problems start. Since you can't fire Sanchez after year 3, I'd be looking at replacing Schotty unless the FO/Rex are really convinced that it's all on Sanchez and BS is a gigantic asset or no better options present themselves.
YEp, play action is hardly a synonym for screen passes. I thought it was commonly accepted that Sanchez did not in years one and two show much touch on screen passes.
This is Ryan's third year with the Jets. Even assuming, as I am prepared to concede for argument's sake, that he was encouraged to retain Schotty when Rex first came here, going into years two and three were different. By then Ryan had the opportunity to coach alongside Schotty. If Rex didn't like what he saw, or the results, he could have said so. Instead of that, he brought him back for a second year, and now a third year. Ftr my point is not that Ryan SHOULD be held to task for keeping Schotty, in case some here miss the point. The point is those who hate Schotty have to accept on some level that Ryan does not share their perception of Schotty. Of course that in turn can mean either that Rex is right and the Schotty haters wrong, or that in fact Rex SHOULD be held to task. Yet somehow the Schotty haters are not yet willing to call for Rex's head. Hm. Wonder why.
As long as Rex puts a top 5 d that gets us deep into the playoffs every year fans will give him a pass to for having an under performing O. At some point if the team doesn't take another step and the team ultimately goes into decline he will be blamed and fired.
I agree. Love Rex but the HC is ulimately responsible for all aspects of the team. iWhen Herm was coach all we said was he wat too conservative and he didnt want to open it up. So we have to hold Rex equally accountable for this offenses shortcomings. Plus I heard earlier today (and it confirms what I was saying to my brother during the game) that Sanchez checked out of a few runs to pass plays.
