How many offsides were you hoping for? Three? Six? One is usually enough to back a team off the snap count, which is exactly what happened.

You two just don't understand this team. "They're calling screens! Why aren't we calling screens! They score in the 1st Quarter! Why aren't we?!"

We're a ground and pound team. I went into greater detail regarding what that means in another post, so I won't repeat myself, but it sure as shit doesn't mean, "Shit; they scored. Well, forget this gameplan we've got- let's try to get in the endzone."

In response to the bolded section klecko... it's all wrong.

    1) We want the pressure to be on the defense.

    2) An emotional toll? You mean, like... Bart Scott starts crying or something in December if we have too many come from behind wins?

    3) "Better to get a big lead first." No shit, but we're not the Colts. We don't have Peyton Manning to rocket his way into the endzone a half dozen times a game, and we don't have Dwight Freeney to pin his ears back and spend the last two quarters of a game rushing the passer.

    4) Nah, man; the "ideal" is to win. Just because you're calling it a game in the third quarter doesn't mean this team is, and we are a FOUR QUARTER TEAM. There are a whole ton of team's in this league who can do some damage in the first quarter but can't finish. That isn't us.

You obviously don't seem to get it. I never called screens because THEY were calling it. I've said, times and again, Dallas D is over-aggressive, and are jumping on every fucking snap. We made them pay how many times? Especially, they NEVER had to give up 1st down because they jumped. (And that should be enough to force them to back off, you are telling me? Good riddance!) Then, one way to neutralize the aggressiveness is by calling screens - that's why I called it, not because either Dallas was doing it (I can't care less about what they do frankly).

If Schotty is using first quarter to get the feel for the defense as he claims, then I just don't see what tendency he sensed there - Dallas D was jumping on nearly every snap deep into the 4th quarter, and they were not backing off at all. Jets offense didn't do nearly enough to force them to back off. Had it not been for that lousy secondary situation, this game is a sure loss, no matter how you slice it. (And McKnight block.)

    You're the one who's wrong.

    1) You should want the pressure to be on opposing teams, not on the Jets.

    2) I have heard many coaches and players talk about the emotional toll and how it wears teams out physically, it drains them. A lot of the game is emotion, fire, and wanting it more than the other team. When you're spent, you don't have that energy. You don't have a clue what you're talking about. You're just showing your ignorance.

    3) I didn't say we were the Colts or had to be like them. Still, even with Penny at QB and with doofuses like Herm and Mangini at HC the team scored in the first qtr. It isn't rocket science. It's just a factor that shows one of the glaring flaws in BS as an OC. You're just too ignorant and blind to see it.

    4) You're unreal. Yeah, this is a real ground and pound team. 16 running plays tonight. I don't think we even totaled 50 yards on the ground. FOFLMAO!!!! Rex has said that the philosophy has changed and that they're gonna start airing it out more. Screens are one of the most effective means of slowing down pass rushes. I think BS called exactly one (on the TD drie right before the end of the 1st half) and it was very effective, then he never did it again. Teams routinely do it against the Jets, yet BS seems to think it is unfair or something or unworthy of calling. I'm surprised he didn't call an end around with his slowest WR tonight.

Thank goodness this team has heart and doesn't quit. Otherwise, they'd never have made it to the AFC Championship game. You act like those of us who point out their weakness of not scoring in the first qtr. are somehow betraying the team. We only want to help the team be better, to gain home field advantage for the playoffs, and actually make it to and win a SB. Not scoring in the 1st qtr. is not acceptable to anyone who really understands the game and wants the Jets to win. Obviously, you don't really care if they win or not.

    Last, but not the least...

    Consider this.

If you have lead - say, two-possession lead - do you know how easier defense becomes? Not just football, but in any sports. Especially if you are confident in your offense's capability to answer back, should the opposing offense scores?

Look at the Jets now. They have a kick-ass defense. Give them 14 point lead - and imagine what kind of ungodly things they could possibly come up. Jets are promptly denied of that chance because this offense fails to score.

I have to agree with Joeklecko our offense needs to score in the 1st quarter to take some pressure off our defense. I would prefer having a comfortable lead with our defense dictating things than for us to make comebacks and hope to catch breaks. If we keep playing that way it wont be long before it backfires on us. Hopefully we begin a trend of more efficient scoring going forward. I'm really tired of these close games.

THIS, I agree with you on. I don't know why we can never do anything on our first drive, it's pretty pathetic really. I think we tried, but the offensive line didn't cooperate.

However, I think we're moving to trying to get an early lead. It's not like we're just run-run-pass like we were in Sanchez's first year. We're trying to throw the ball, albeit in short increments.

I always like the idea of getting the ball in the 2nd half, and I'm glad we do that. That contributes to the offense not scoring in the 1st, but at the same time, we need to do better.

If we make the other team completely one-dimensional with a lead, it makes life a hell of a lot easier. Plus, points in the 1st count the same as points in the 4th.

Obviously. Most everyone wants to give every kind of rationalizing they can for our deficits, but it's obviously better to score first. There is no reason we can't. Plax just proved himself, he is a serious weapon. Sanchez proved he could go complete 60% and pass for well over 300 yards while looking pretty damn sharp.

This team can score early. It's not like the last two years. I thought the play-calling was more aggressive early but the results didn't come this time. Hopefully they'll get a little sharper with a couple easy wins and start to put the pressure on the other team instead of always the other way around.

My voice box could use the consideration, as could my heart. These insane wins are awesome but I could really go for a nice easy trouncing occasionally. This is a gigantic victory but Rex and the guys need to build on it and get this team playing to elite status week in and week out.

Glad we won, but Schotty still blows. BS is just BS.

This is my request for Schotty:

    1. Just scrap the pre-snap motion. You fucking suck at making effective plays with motion, so just fuck that shit already.

    2. WATCH WHAT THEY ARE DOING FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. Dallas D was jumping on every fucking snap from the first snap till the end of the game. So how did Schotty adjust to that? By doing abso-fucking-lutely nothing. Jesus fucking Christ.

I think the Jets need to adopt the Packers/Colts style and come out in no huddle at least for the first offensive series.

Get Sanchez warmed up and then turn to ground and pound. And then maybe we'll actually score in the first quarter!

Absolutely agree. Sanchez has always played best in the no-huddle or 2-minute drill. He seems to lose focus and overplay his reads when they come out of a normal huddle. I don't know if they script their first drive or not but it usually sucks anyway. Let him do what he does best.

All in all the play calling wasn't bad last night though. I can only remember 1 time when he ran it up the middle on 2nd or 3rd and long. That's usually a 10 time a game thing with him.

I don't ever post in this thread but I came in here to "brainlessly" bash Schottenheimer. He's so fucking bad at his job it baffles me. How many times are we going to run it up the gut with Shonn Greene after a big gain? It was like clockword: 10+ yard pass, first down... up the gut with Greene for a whopping two yards. Ever hear of running outside the tackles? Where the hell was the slant when you have Holmes and Derrick Mason on the field? Screen for LT? He's a complete joke.

Anyone notice we had our best drive of the game, the Plax TD, when we went into the no hudle?

The two best drives were no huddle. Don't forget about the one before halftime as well. We needed those 7 points.

Sanchez is a better playcaller than Schotty and Schotty is supposed to the OC? Sad. He is horrible. And I don't normally come in this thread either, but today after that game, it's necessary.

When it was clear that our O-line was being abused in the first half why not bring in an extra lineman, more 2 TE sets?

Few plays need to be called into question

    1) The WR sideline pass to Holmes on 2ND AND 4. You want to sell me on this on 2nd and 10? Fine. But the play was absolutely awful being so close to the Cowboys D that it was asking for trouble, no matter if Sanchez made the completion or not. Holmes nearly got killed there.

    2) Not having Mason as a check down receiver until the 3rd.......his purpose on the team is to be a short yard option for Sanchez to turn to when he needs help and when defenders are getting in his face.

    3) Mason over Burress on the fade pass in the endzone. Granted with Burress, he would have been double teamed but that would just mean someone like Keller or Holmes would have been all the more open. You brought Plax for this! Thankfully Keller scored next play(Anyone could have called that....)

    4) Understanding the Cowboys weakness. Their safeties are miserable and their corners are depleted and aren't even that great when healthy. Throwing to LT on 3rd and 9 for a gain of 4 yards in the 2nd quarter is no go with me. Amazing Keller and Plax had 0 catches until the 2nd half.....you can't do that.

How about spreading them out wide, and getting Kerley and Mason on whatever they have passing for 4th corners on that banged up secondary?

While I agree mostly on Schotty's lack of ability (1 yd screen pass on 3rd and 2 when you should just run the damn ball), just keep in mind everyone that the Cowboys pass rush was breathing down Sanchez's neck all last night, not allowing a lot of plays to develop. I'll wait to bash Schotty if this is same old same old in Jax.

I was BAFFLED sitting there in my seat every time we'd need 4 yards for a first or short third and Mason would be on the sideline. And how do you go into the redzone and not throw a fade to Burress right out of the 1st down huddle?! I just don't get him. I'm thoroughly convinced he's holding Sanchez back developmentally because when Sanchez does his own thing, he's a whole different QB.
