He had a great end of the regular season and postseason last year. First 13-14 games, not so much. I give him a C tonight. The run/pass ratio was inexcusable. Too many WR screens reminded me of his worst games last year. He does deserve credit for some of his gutsier calls, but he did not do well and was not the reason the Jets won the game.
16 games in a row with no 1st quarter offensive TD. That needs to be fixed immediately!!! It's amazing how much we win considering we only score in 3 quarters.
Well. Not just against him. Whenever I see repeated fuck-ups that do not get corrected, that literally gets on my nerves. Remember - I said REPEATED. First few times I can let go - to err is human after all. If it stays there, it's not an error - that's more like a character.
I wanted to run the ball more in the 1st half. I even told that to Scik. I should have mentioned that in my first post. I thought we gave up on it too early. But it wasn't breaking anything, and their secondary was completely beat up. Run a little more, and maybe take one or two shots to stretch the field. Instead, we just did a ton of short passes. Early in the game was the time to run the ball. We didn't do it enough in the 1st half. But in the 2nd half, when you're trailing, and they are down to their 4th and 5th cornerbacks, throw the ball down the field a bit. Coming from behind, I was in favor of abandoning it in favor of trying to exploit secondary weakness. You guys are right, we did abandon the run in favor of a short passing game. But there were no holes to run through at all. The way to beat the Cowboys was by throwing the ball. I was all for establishing the run in the 1st half. But I was all for abandoning it in the 2nd half. Plaxico on a 4th stringer is a total mismatch. Same with Holmes. Try to exploit that. And we went no-huddle and started to do that. I do agree on your points about the screens and hard counts. I would have gladly gotten rid of those WR screens, which Sanchez never throws well anyway, in favor of more RB screens to LT and Greene. Hell, one of our biggest plays of the game was the screen to LT. Both teams were able to have success doing that. I never said I loved the playcalling, but when the offensive line is getting manhandled like they were in the 1st half, there aren't a lot of good plays in the playbook. I always have problems with Schottenheimer, but I'm more down on our offensive talent now than I was earlier in the game. Definitely want to watch the tape of this game.
A- This, most definitely, is some brainless Schottenheimer bashing. Our offensive gameplan was excellent. We started the game a little pass heavy to exploit Dallas' weak secondary, it wasn't there yet, so we shifted back to the run to soften things up. And that's exactly what happened- Shonn Greene softened Mike Jenkins' skull. After that, and after the Scandrick injury, we went to the air for the remainder of the game, just like we should have. This "we should have run more" crap is ridiculous. Why should we have run more, to lose like Jets? As I said in another thread, we just hung up 334 passing yards on a Ryan defense. There was a shit-ton of lousy execution, but there wasn't a damn thing wrong with the gameplan. I don't like Schottenheimer, but you can't get on him for this one.
What's with this obsession to score in the first quarter? As long as we put up the points by the end of the game, it's fine. We defer the ball to the 2nd half all the time, and that contributes to 1st quarters without scoring, and more scoring during the 2nd half of the game. We had 360 yards of offense. It really doesn't matter if those yards came later into the game, rather than in the first.
Fuck Schotty, he sucks, but our problems on offense go deeper than him. Rex's refusal to take the training wheels off the offense, Sanchez's inaccuracy, and the OLine's shitty run and pass blocking all contributed to our struggles. The game thread was classic. When the run gets stuffed, everybody yells "Pass the fucking ball Schotty!" When Sanchez throws a pick, it's "Where in the Hell is the Ground and Pound?" Maybe we should just take a knee every play. Oh, and by the way, we fucking won!
I actually liked the screens to Plax, only because Jenkins was hobbled. Using first down to force an injured corner to tackle our biggest receiver is sound thinking; to Jenkins credit he stepped up and dropped Plax on one of them (and Sanchez blew the throw on the other) but it was an alright call I think.
Mark's cadence was excellent. He used his hard count the whole game and exposed the defenses plans consistently. You seem to not remember him drawing the overzealous Ryan defense (they all are) offside. And we moved the ball well on screens. I think you're right- you were clearly watching a different game.
I tend to agree with this. The jets had two possessions in the first quarter if I remember correctly and they were in the middle of the second one as the quarter ended.
Ugh. You obviously didn't read my other posting. How many off-sides did he induce? I remember seeing one. Screens? I remember seeing TWO in the first half, and then not much in the second half.
You can't be serious!!! When the other team scores in the first quarter, the Jets need to score as well. We can't count on the team falling behind and then coming back every week. That puts too much pressure on the D. Those things wear on a team over the course of a season and take an emotional toll. Better to have the lead and let the D dictate things, and the offense then has options of how they play rather than being forced to play catch up and having to throw the ball most of the time. Getting yards late in the game is meaningless if you lose. If you win, it doesn't matter as much, but again, the ideal is to take the lead and put the pressure on the other team.
Offensive Gameplan Come on guys...I understand that we want the running game to be more EFFECTIVE than it was tonight, but the truth of the matter is that the Cowboy defense was very vulnerable in the secondary tonight. They took advantage of the cowboys weakness. Thats the way you have to plan. Have no problem with it. It would be stupid to just run run run when they have a good front 7 and an extremely weak secondary.
Sanchez was also using motion to determine the type of D the 'girls were playing. You could see it repeatedly throughout the game. He would send, usually, Keller in motion and see what the 'girls did, then he would audible. Clearly the training wheels are coming off and Sanchez is getting to play with a larger offensive package and being more successful with it. 300+ yards, 60% completion percentage, 2 TDs and 1 bonehead INT. Oh and a win. I was very happy with the progress I saw today.
