I saw a few good things...but overall we could have done without his play calling. Never got the screen game going despite all these blitzes.
Today's overall is a c+. There was some good things that they can build on but there are definitely kinks that need to be worked out. The play calling really wasn't too bad overall but the offense as a whole could have done better. They needed a lot of help to get the win tonight.
He sucks Ware is Cowboys best def. player. Watch the tape. Sanchez holding ball less than 4 seconds. Great success. More than 4, not so much. Now. What is the ration between the two? (def and st cant bail you out every week)
I spent the whole game counting. 1 Mississippi 2 Mississippi 3 Mississippi. Ball gone, Positive play. Too many times getting past three.
I'd give him a B. It's always tougher for an offensive coordinator when you fall behind early, and that was especially true tonight (we never could get our run game going.) I would say B-, but that two minute drill at the end of the first half was a thing of beauty. Schottenheimer made a lot of very good adjustments in the second half though--some shorter routes designed to put pressure on Dallas' banged up/inexperienced corners made a world of difference (and the numbers would look even better if not for a few misplays by Sanchez/Mason.)
The difference in efficiency between the No Huddle offense and when Schotty calls the plays, is apparent. Enough of the presnap motion bullshit and start playing to the strength of your offense, Shotty. Christ. There's no fucking way the game should've been this close. Not with Dallas's banged-up secondary. When Mark was running the no-huddle...the offense was unstoppable.
The passing game was effective, but I just don't see any reason to think that a 15 runs / 44 passes split can be a good idea. Rex just said that he thought Schottenheimer called a great game and thought his battle with Rob Ryan was a "heavyweight title fight."
I'm sure that is true. I still can't take to much issue with the play calling overall. Part of your counting thing is the first or second read being there. If it isn't the ball isn't coming out as quickly. I didn't see to many awful play calls throughout the night. I took issue with leaving Sanchez out to dry in the 1st half but I did see some guys open if someone could have blocked Ware for more than half a second.
Rob Ryan's defense nearly beat us with a bunch of scrubs in the secondary....just sayin'. If that's considered a "heavyweight title fight" in Rex's eyes...then the offense is in trouble.
Well, it's hard to call plays when your running game provides absolutely nothing. I didn't think he called a terrible 1st half. I would have liked to take maybe one shot down the field, but Sanchez had no time at all in the 1st half. In the 2nd half, I hated all the WR screens to Plaxico and running the ball when it was evident the run was just not there.
Terrible terrible play calling. They ran one proper screen the whole night and got 30 something yards. Rob Ryan was blitzing all night. Why not call some more screen passes? To clarify - those passes to plax were not properly set up screens - Sanchez saw the cb playing off plax and threw it to him immediately.
Were you watching the same game I was watching? I am sure we watched different game. Look. If the defense is jumping on EVERY FUCKING SNAP, then you are not going to get anything going. That split second makes a world of difference in the battle of trenches. If the defense keeps doing that, the offense must make them pay by jumping. I have posted in the in-game thread; you must use hard-count on 2nd and 3rd downs, and you MUST call screen passes a few times. Dallas did the screen pass thing - they moved the ball really well with it. Jets? Not much. So basically, you are not forcing the defense to back off at all, then you are asking the OL to create all those running lanes against jumping defense? Are you freakin' serious?
Fifteen total runs in the game, not counting a Mark Sanchez scramble which was a called pass. Not really showing a commitment to the run here.
Very generous, if it comes to that. It's literally painful to watch Schottenheimer offense. If things are that much clear for even a layman like myself could notice, how much clearer it has to get? Dallas defense was teeing off on EVERY SNAP today. I saw ONE induced offside, and about handful - about two? three? - screen pass. If Jets lost today, I would have given it a square F - I'm staying with passing grade of D simply because you can't give him F on a winning day.
Can't wait for him to be fired after the season after more questionable calls in pressure situations deep into the playoffs.
Schottenheimer needs to figure out how to script a successful first quarter drive. 16 straight games without a first quarter TD is not acceptable.
