Nothing surprising up to now... these are my 10 cuts (9 since S. McKnight got the axe): P. Turner - Didn't really show much. Good potential but there are plenty of serviceable WRs out there (although not as big as him). He should stick on our PS. Kroul - One year on the PS and then let's see if we've got a Moore 2.0 on our hands. When R. Turner gets healthy again I'm ok in cutting Felix and calling Kroul back on the 53 (in case a team tries to steal him). Right now we need a C and a guy who's played OL his entire career. Gilbert - Sucks for him but we have 4 pretty damn good DEs ahead of him. Tevaseu was getting pushed around a bit too much vs the Giants but I think they'll keep him ahead of Gilbert. Don't think he'll stick on the PS... some 34 team will pick him up. Berning - Good camp fodder but that's about it. Won't even get a chance to go to the PS. Posey - Seems like he's shown more in practice than on gameday... that said we're deep at CB. Might make the PS depending on what he showed during TC. T. Wilson - Who!? Deep at S and hasn't been here long enough to make an impact. Trufant - I think Lankster has shown enough during the pre-season to make it ahead of him. And now the difficult ones... Cook - At the end of the day I think Lankster has shown more... both on D and on ST. That said Cook should have a better grasp of the system so he's the one that might stay. I'd prefer to see Lankster around though... BONUS --> if Ihedigbo is cut by the Pats do we bring him back... instead of these two guys? Payne/Baker - Let me clarify here... right now Payne should get cut so we have Baker as a backup FB/blocking TE/ST in case Conner can't make it for the Dallas game. After that game (and also depending on how much interest Payne gets from around the league) we should re-sign Payne and slip Baker on the PS (assuming Conner is healthy). If the Jets really see someone they like during final cuts they might both get the axe. Maybe Payne on IR...? Problem with this is... A. We're thin at WR with two very old guys... and the NFL stands for Not For Long... however we have some good recieving options at TE. B. We're thin on the OL with a guy (Moore) who's coming back from an imporant surgery. C. Since they don't want to put McElroy on IR potentially we're thin at QB too with only a 40 yr old as a backup if Sanchez gets killed. Advantages... A. We keep 10 DBs and Rex loooves DBs... B. We keep some talented backup LBs in Maybin & McIntyre. BONUS QUESTION(S): Think we'll show interest in Ryan Jones, CB, cut by Chicago? What about that Bryan Braman kid from the Texans (although he hasn't been cut yet)? I think he has more potential than Maybin as a rusher. What interesting OL might get cut?
QB (3): Mark Sanchez, Mark Brunell, Greg McElroy RB (4): Shonn Greene, LaDainian Tomlinson, Joe McKnight, Bilal Powell FB (1): John Conner WR (4): Santonio Holmes, Plaxico Burress, Derrick Mason, Jeremy Kerley, TE (3): Dustin Keller, Matt Mulligan, Jeff Cumberland, OL (9): D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Matt Slauson, Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore, Wayne Hunter, Rob Turner, Vladimir Ducasse, Robby Felix, some tackle. DL (7): Sione Pouha, Mike DeVito, Muhammad Wilkerson, Kenrick Ellis, Marcus Dixon, Ropati Pitoitua, Martin Tevaseu, LB (9): Bart Scott, David Harris, Calvin Pace, Bryan Thomas, Josh Mauga, Jamaal Westerman, Aaron Maybin, Nick Bellore, Matthias Berning CB (5): Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Kyle Wilson, Donald Strickland, Marquice Cole, S (5): Jim Leonhard, Eric Smith, Brodney Pool, Emanuel Cook, Dwight Lowery Specialists (3): K Nick Folk, P TJ Conley, LS Tanner Purdum Since I made an extra cut to accomodate the incoming lineman, I'll say that Lankster keeps his head for the moment. Wouldn't have guessed Berning But I'll trust the reports and go with it.
I agree with almost all your players. I think we're going with 4 WRs, and keep Campbell, DePlama & Scotty, Nacho's boyfriend all on the P.S. We could go 2 QBs, till McE is healthy, and keep Willy on the P. S. I think McIntyre & Lankster are going to make the 53. I'm betting Maybin is toast!! I'm not sold just yet Berning is going to make the 53.
Did not see this posted could be wrong: JennyVrentas Jenny Vrentas OLB Garrett McIntyre has been told he'll be part of the Jets' 53-man roster, per a source. #nyj
TheJetsStream Manish Mehta I've been told the #Jets plan as of right now is to keep LB Matthias Berning, who was a standout last night vs. Eagles. #nyj
Hmmm Berning, Bellore and McIntyre all make the roster. Maybin may be getting cut after all... I hope not but its looking that way.
I'm guessing one between Vrentas and MAnish is wrong... and it will be Manish with his Berning story. I can't see how he sticks on the 53 (unless Mauga hurt himself in practice or stuff like that). Very happy for McIntyre though! Good call on saying he'd become a fan favorite for his effort E... Now let's see if Maybin stays around too...
Mehta is usually spot on. I'm not sure why you think he's wrong. McIntyre's a good player that's finally found a true position. I think Maybin's gone.
No Lankster TheJetsStream Manish Mehta #Jets will cut Ellis Lankster, per source. NYJ wants him for the practice squad. #nyj Yes Strickland TheJetsStream Manish Mehta #Jets have told CB Donald Strickland that he will make the 53-man roster, per source. #nyj
Because Bellore and Berning sound similar and both played at Central Michigan and both played well yesterday so maybe the guy passing him the info got mixed up... Also I would be pissed if we kept Berning over Maybin and #99 Jones! TheJetsStream Manish Mehta #Jets will cut Ellis Lankster, per source. NYJ wants him for the practice squad. #nyj Damn... hopefully he sticks around on the PS.
Lankster was getting burnt pretty badly last night and if it wasn't for that pick 6 he would have had a terrible night. I'd much rather give Maybin a spot over him now that Bellore, Berning and McIntyre are in.
Alright boys...the battle lines are drawn. I say Maybin stays and a few others do too. Most say he's gone. We'll find out. If they cut to 4 WR and ship out lankster (cook if they go that way) in the first instance...they could be keeping all 4 of the lbs...I don't really see that though. I think Maybin beats out 1 of the 3 and they either chop lankster/cook (whoever is standing after tomorrow) or a 2nd of the 3 lb's when they find an O lineman. If they cut him I'll eat my crow...expect you guys to do the same if they don't.
wow they cut lankster just like that? I thought he was going to be the bubble man I guess they're declaring their position very strongly now. Logan Payne will be the last man to be cut after they find the olineman. All 4 LB's. Awesome! Never cared too much about losing Logan anyway. I think this way provides a ton of flexibility because they can call up any of the PS receivers for one of the LB's in the event that one of the 4 goes down or is underachieving that badly you'd want them replaced for some random reason. Actually it will probably be 3 guys since McIntyre, Berning, or Bellore are the last guy out after an Oline comes in.
What impressed me about Lankster was his special team play. The guy has some ballhawk skills, he made 2 Int's in same game for Buffalo in the preseason last year. Everythong right now is second hand reports, the Jets haven't made any announcements. They will probably announce all the cuts at the some time after 3 P.M. tomorrow.
It is all second hand but it makes perfect sense to me. It was clear there is a lot of depth and possibilities at LB...and if this all shakes out true to form I have to really hand it to them for being this gutsy to go that way and cut Lankster and keep everything trim back there. I'm just not a person that buys that special teams contributions are important enough to trump any but the most negligible defensive performance advantages. I'm very happy to see the reports leaning that way. Now just announce Maybin is staying and let me sleep easy! And the problem with Lankster is that we have too much going on at CB. Revis/Cromartie. Kid ready to step up. Bring in Donald Strickland with Marquice coming in when they feel like using him. How does he fit there? Cook is the smart bet keeping things shored up with our Safety weaknesses. I truly believe in my heart that they're not going to do something so stupid as to cut Maybin before they cut an injured and unproven Logan Payne...or worse just stick one of our practice squad receivers on the roster to start out with without the need expressly there. This team is too smart for that.
Yea, Manish gets his info from his sister's friend's cousin's ex-co-worker's butler. I'm sure the dude has credible sources.
I don't think Bellore will clear waivers. Some other team will sign him. If the Jets cut him, I think it's a big mistake. The kid's a player.
I don't think he stood out much on ST. In fact, he struggled there against the Giants (IIRC, he was absolutely destroyed on the KO team), and I didn't notice much of an impact from him against the Eagles. He had a late tackle on the opening kick off, but only after struggling against blocks.
