I definitely think that the thing is not without its merits...mostly deriving from the substitution issue but that is on the way in not the way out and the problem for this team in this formation is the way out in my view. Brad Smith, greatest kick returner ever? No...Brad Smith good kick returner on a really good system looking as good as he can look. Sure, Kerley can look cool too with the wildcat on our fine ball club, but at what cost? Not to mention he's a rookie and that's a shitload of responsibility to put on a rookie. IF YOU'RE READING THIS, DON'T DO IT SCHOTTY I'M ASKING NICELY.
I like the wildcat, but only in certain situations. I'm not real big on it being a one play a half type deal. If we can come out and run it for several plays back to back, I think that will be more beneficial than subbing the package in for one play during a drive.
Touchy touchy. Okay great. I didn't say he wouldn't. And duh. Of course he aint B. Smith. I'm just not sold. Scuse me for livin. Does every post have to be positive about Kerley? Everything on the field is subject to scrutiny. Even homer fans. Till I see him with the number ones I reserve judgement. Maybe that's why there isn't a buzz? He did great with two's and three's. Let's hope he ain't a preseason hero. Trust me. If he succeeds I'd be a fool to contest it then. Love. Love the JETS.
the guy at the jetsblog.com called it the "trojanhornedfrogcat" (mcknight and kerley back there). I lol'ed.
Fozzi58, what I should have said is that B. Smith didn't throw "much". That's true he did throw that TD to Keller. He had a couple throws I think, but the vast majority of the time when I'd see B. Smith line up in the wildcat, it was going to be a running play. I don't have the statistics in front of me, but it seemed like almost every time he'd run it.
I'm likely overthinking it here.... It seems like they may have intentionally shown a variety of plays off the wildcat- a straight run, a handoff, an option play and a pass. So the other teams have to prepare for it. Before the last Colts playoff game, Caldwell said they had to spend a whole day on defense in practice to prepare for the Jets wildcat. It was good to see them run a variety of plays from the formation, and it's interesting to see that the Jets ran a variety of plays- one time each. Something that will go on film that the other teams will have to be prepared for. But I expect to see us run variations on the basic plays. Kerley did a good job on the pass, good to see. It'll keep the defenses honest and not sell out on the run on wildcat plays.
They should just start Kerley at QB. He'll be the first QB ever to throw a TD pass to himself...that is if Cromartie doesn't take every kickoff to the house....It's going to be a good year. SUPERBOWL OR BUST!
I need to see more and in real games to say we've replaced Brad Smith, but so far I like what I see. On one play it looked like McKnight was clear to the right edge and Kerley went straight for about nine yards, but maybe I didn't see something he saw. Either way its encouraging, it comes down to Tannenbaum and Rex being able to get good guys in and put them in position to succeed.
Exactly. I am in no hurry to say we're improved our Wildcat at all based on a sort of knee-jerk preseason reaction. However he did look elusive and showed a lot more burst than his 4.59 40 time would indicate. Maybe I'm crazy, but I would also like to see LT get a few reps in that formation.
Pretty sure this happened years ago. Favre or Young maybe?? Around the 10 yard line, pass is deflected back to the QB and he runs it in.
Not a huge fan of the wildcat, or I should say, when Schotty decides to use it. It was nice to use when the regular offense was struggling. However, he would also throw it in when Sanchez was marching down the field. LT would be great to have in the formation, as both he a Kerley can throw it.
Nice call, it was Farve..and it resulted in a loss of 7 yards. That said, the rules changed regarding offense-to-offense deflected balls many years before that (dating myself). That is, at one point it was illegal to have a ball tipped legally from offense-to-offense. SB V (Colts-Cowboys, Orange Bowl '71), a Unitis brick over the middle was tipped by Colt WR Eddie Hinton, then by Cowboy DB Mel Renfro, then gathered in by Colt TE John Mackey who took it 75 yds to the house. Useless trivia: Fran Tarkenton (while with the NYG), attempted a 'dink-dunk' pass inside the opposing team's 5-yard line...it bounced off an OL whereupon Tarkington grabbed it out of the air and ran it in--technically a TD reception, but was ruled otherwise. Today, the offense-to-offense reception has been changed to allow an offense-to-offense completion provided the offensive player who tipped the ball is an elligible receiver (i.e. not center, guard or a traditional, "non-elligible" tackle).
I actually wished we woulda let Brad throw more out of the wildcat. It woulda kept the D honest. Brad played QB at a pretty high level in college. I think he could hit a few open guys. Anyway, Kerley looked good running it and had some zip on the ball. That little dude is shifty as hell. He kinda has some Dante Hall and Dexter McCluster in his game.
As others have been mentioning, that was the problem. It drove me crazy how predictable the playcalling was from the wildcat formation the past couple of years. When you have a formation that is intended to keep the defense guessing and then run the same play out of it 99% of the time it loses all of it's effect. I never understood whether they didn't trust B. Smith to throw the ball or what but it seemed like they could have done so much more with it. Kerley certainly looked good running the wildcat in the few plays we saw last night, but if Schotty doesn't mix up the playcalling then what's the point? I guess we'll see how it develops once the real games start.
