Per Manish's Twitter account, Nick Novak and Chris Bryan are out, and Folk will get the K job, while Conley will be the punter.
It's getting to be that time. We should see a few more roster moves today. I've never doubted Nick Folk. ...and like I said in another thread: Westhoff and the coaching staff must see something in TJ Conley if they keep bringing him back. He was a heck of a punter in college, so hopefully in translates over and he's consistent.
TheJetsStream Manish Mehta Source tells me the #Jets are open to looking at all available punter options. TJ Conley is penciled in to be Week 1 starter though. #nyj
nick folk is a dick he doesn't have the leg on kickoffs that we've seen almost damn near every other team have in the preseason. but yea... i'm a nick folk supporter. understand where the hate comes from, but i don't see the point. he can get the job done.
You obviously don't understand what hes doing then. The Jets are purposefully kicking the ball up high so they can stop you before the 25 which they have been doing a lot. Other teams are just booting it and being ok with touch backs. When you have a ST coach like Mike Westhoff you use him.
Honestly, I think with the new KO rules, Folk becomes more of an asset because his kicks now wind up in that gray area that makes a Kick returner hesitate about downing the kick or taking it out of the end zone, and we've seen it make short work of a couple returns.
I'm a bit ambivalent about Folk. I support him, and I think he'll do fine, but I just always have this nagging feeling like he's going to wind up proving the doubters right and blow a major kick. He hasn't particularly let me down for supporting him yet though, so I don't know why it nags at me. As for Conley, I like him enough. He has to get the job done when the leaves turn red though.
I still think the Jets will take a look at the punters being released on final cuts day... just like we did when we brought in Weatherford a couple of years ago. Not saying Conley won't be here in the reg season but they don't seem 100% sure on him. As I suspected... I'll admit that I don't like Folk very much but whatever. It's not like Nick Novak (or any of the other unemployed kickers out there) are any better than he is. I like to think of kickers as relief pitchers: there's a small group who are elite, and other than them you can't really predict what their performance will be from year to year. So you ride the hot hand (or in this case, foot) until he goes cold, then you go in a different direction. Hopefully Folk stays hot for a while.
Folk won us a playoff game on the road, which is pressure that's hard to simulate. Unless he really shit the bed I wanted him back, we know he can handle a BIG kick. Nobody makes every kick.
You should care about those guys. They tend to be important in at least a couple of games over the course of the season. Like game-enders. That's the thing. I want him to make the FGs. I'd like him to boot it between the 5 and 15 on KOs, but that's gravy. Score the points and let the STs and defense take care of field position.
I know, but their job isn't to make plays. It's to not fuck up. Their roles are thankless, and deeply uninteresting. As long as they don't screw up I don't care who they are.
Agreed. Ride the hot hand and then throw him on the scrap heap when he fades. Whatever you do, don't use a draft pick on a kicker.
The way the Jets' play defensively on offense, the punter is more valuable in our scheme than a kicker. This guy better perform. Tired of touchbacks when the kicks should be inside the 10.
i just googled and saw 3 K/P that were drafted in the first round... OMG Ray Guy was drafted in the first round by the Raiders in 1973 Charlie Gogolak was drafted in the first round by the Redskins in 1966 Russell Erxleben was drafted in the first round by the Saints in 1979
