Bill Belichick doesn’t see the point in extra points Patriots coach Bill Belichick recently caused a stir when he said the NFL wants to eliminate kickoffs. Now Belichick has weighed in on a play that he says would be better suited to elimination: The extra point. In an interview on WEEI, Belichick pointed out that the point after touchdown is so easy that it rarely creates any interest at all, and he said that if the league isn’t going to make it harder, then the league should just get rid of it. “Philosophically, plays that are non-plays shouldn’t be in the game,” Belichick said, via Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com. “I don’t think it is good for the game. Extra points, when you’re up to the 99 percent range in extra points it’s not a play. Let’s move the ball back to the 15-20 yard line and not make it a tap in. Make them kick it. Same thing with the kickoff return, if you’re just going to put the ball on the 20, put the ball on the 20.” Belichik is getting more opinionated... maybe he's hanging out with the Ryan boys in the offseason. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/23/bill-belichick-doesnt-see-the-point-in-extra-points/
He is sort of right, but the ability to go for the two pointer makes the play relevant still. I'd be happy to see the kick made more difficult though.
I would agree with moving the extra point back. You'd then have an issue with the two point conversion, though. I guess you could move the XP back 5-10 yards and keep the LOS the same if a coach opts to go for 2.
Yep, been saying that for years. They just ruined kickoffs, but how about fixing something that has been ruined for years? Push conversion kicks back to at least the 5 or maybe even the 10 for 1pt. Give an option to go for 2pts with a kick from the 30. A 47 yard kick has to be as probable as a 2pt try from the 2 yard line. How about this for a silly rule: a personal foul at the 20 yardline is more yards than one from the 15. Granted, it is only 2.5 yards, but backed up to your own endzone, that 2.5 yards can be huge. The NFL is broken in so many ways, but the owners will only focus on what the media, players, and fans make a big issue about. Player safety has been the biggest talking point. The NFL made the kickoff changes primarily to draw attention away from a bigger concern which is concussions and helmets. Last time, concussions and helmets were this big an issue, Congress almost outlawed football. Earthquake just delayed me posting this about an hour and a half. Damn evac. I think I got a sun burn.
The ease of the PAT is the only deterrent from just going for the 2 pointer all the time, which would take away from the excitement of 2 pt scenarios.
There should be a narrower set of uprights inside the existing ones, maybe about 1/4 of the width. If the extra point goes between those, you get 2 points, 1 for anywhere else in the regular goalposts. If you miss altogether, you lose a point, if its blocked, its just nothing. Or allow the option to set up for a 50 yarder that counts as 2 as an alternative. Or allow extra points based on a panel scoring of the TD dance. /stupid thoughts
