Our receiving corp looked good considering Plax wasn't there and Holmes had limited action. Mason was good and looked to be picking up the offense well. Both Kerley and Cumberland looked solid tonight for backup players. McKnight still did not show much. He is losing the return battle and can't pick up a block for shit. Powell didn't do much either, but at least it's his 1st year and based on how McKnight was this time last year he's not doing that bad. As stated and agreed upon, our O-line depth is weak, but give a hand to Robby Felix, who came in and played well at center for a guy most would have written off as just a preseason roster filler.
No mentions for Sanchez? I loved the tempo the O played at when MS was in, quick accurate throws and hustling to the line for the next play, tough for any D to play against.
Sanchez played good, but he didn't get us in the endzone... twice on the other team's side of the field and only 3 points. McElroy was pretty good for a 7th round rookie in his 1st nfl game and no O-line support to stand behind. The kid learned a lot last night and toward the end he was making some good reads and throws. The dropped TD could have really helped his stats. Completing 23 of 39 for 208 yards and a TD doesn't seem too bad considering how many times he hit the turf and gives hope that he could work his way up to 2nd on the depth chart in 2012. The last play of the game sucked, he should have thrown a pass to the endzone and let a receiver at least have a try for the TD.
Yeah...it was an absolute bullet. Christ, I said repeatedly the kid had an excellent game, why are you harping on the fact that I think the kid doesn't have a strong arm? He doesn't. The ball was underthrown. Not on the TD, but the pass 3 or 4 plays before. I forgot that everything Gruden and co. say is 100 percent accurate. They also compared a second string pass rusher on the Texans to Jack Lambert, so take it for what it's worth. The duck dropped between three defenders so I'm sure it was an underthrown ball regardless of what an announcer said. The WR had a step on the secondary. There...it's pretty easy to disagree with someone without having a douchey tone.
An extra 5 yards and Nick Folk still can't kick a ball into the fucking end zone. And my Kerley praise is on hold until he actually catches some balls. Ducasse is asse and McElroy is the return of the noodle arm. Aside from that, I liked what I saw from Powell and Turner. The Terminator was wreckin' shit and Cumberland looks like a nice big target for us.
i dont think anyone really shined. there was some encouraging things to see for sure, but i wouldnt say anyone shined. especially kurley, who i was extremely disappointed with
Well, it was his first professional game. He didn't drop any passes, that's enough for me to like what I saw. He'll be fine.
I don't. Plus, I don't know if gym work can help. A lot of it is the hand size. Along with everyone else, I liked his guts and the way he battled especially after DuCasse's pass blocking almost got him killed, but he throws too soft for the NFL. I was hoping for some fair-catches out there watching those rainbows. If he QB's for an extended period of time, we'll have concussion problems amongst our receivers. As much as Coles loved Chad when he was here, he would have had a longer career had the ball consistently arrived 1/10 sooner. McElroy looks to be a career back-up to me, and I'm fine with that. He made Leinert look like he had a rocket arm. Yates too.
How can you be extremely disappointed with a rookie wr who averaged about 32 yards on KO's under the new rules?
Interesting game. As everyone noticed the Jets OLine backups were really bad. Better hope the 1st OLine stays healthy. Mason looked like he could catch anything in the general vicinity, however he also looked pretty slow. Plax must fill in for Edwards because if he can't the Jets offense is going to take a big hit. Plax is going to be a very important player for the Jets. There wasn't a running game in evidence at all, no evaluation possible. McElroy looked good, lots of spunk. Kerley is def going to make everyone forget Smith. The question is whether or not he will see much time as a WR. The red zone drop is a concern. The Jets had the best return team in the league last year. I suspect the new rules are going to make that less of an advantage because there will be more touchbacks, and make it harder for the Jets O.
I'd love to hear from Westy this week. I have a feeling he may have told Nick to lay off a shade so they could test the coverage schemes.
There's nothing wrong with McElroy being a career backup--he was a 7th round pick after all, if the Jets can turn him into a reliable #2 then that would be a huge win for the organization. At the risk of sounding like John Gruden, I absolutely love McElroy's fire. He got beaten up all night, but he bounced back from having a game winner dropped to make a perfect throw for a first down, and then he got into the center of the huddle before the last play and got the team fired up. Even though he botched the last play, I was very impressed with everything leading up to it. Let's not forget, this guy was the leader of an undefeated Texas state championship team in high school and an undefeated National Champion in college. He scored a 43 on the Wonderlic test and got brilliant grades all throughout college (Bama isn't exactly Princeton, but still.) This is the kind of guy you want holding the clipboard.
Turner's lack of ST ability is really going to hurt his chances to be our last receiver. Just throwing this out there as an option... but if we were to keep a 6th WR, it would likely be a guy who is a high end ST guy, and not necessarily have much in the way of WR skills. That guy just might be Dan DePalma #87. I saw him in on at least 3 ST plays on KR, and he was the primary back up punt return guy. I dunno, something about him says future Wallace Wright to me... I could be totally wrong and he may suck the rest of the way, but I think he clearly outperformed any of the other "fringe" receivers in the ST department last night
I think they were more worried about keeping Sanchez upright than scoring a touchdown, especially on the 2nd drive.
