Ken, do you wear an ascot?

JK- you strike me as a "normal" Pats fan- talk about a contradiction!

I'm still curious as to how much Shaun Ellis played last year. Wasn't it around 60-70% of the snaps? That's a pretty large contribution to fill (entirely with unproven players no less) and I believe it's more than any other D lineman on the roster.

Am I mistaken in this assumption? Did he have a smaller role than I am remembering?

If the Pats paid this guy 4 million then Belicheck has lost his mind and the Pats are really hurting in the front office since Scott Pioli left. They draft 6 million players so they are bound to hit on a couple, same thing with FA. Still, the price they pay is nuts. Haynesworth will be cut before the regular season he's such a piece of crap. I am sorry, we have the best personnel department in the AFC East and that will carry us over the years. Ellis is finished and I think the Jets made him offer so they did not look bad and then cut him once the pre-season was over. He was a non contributor last year, sorry, what he did the last 10 years does not matter to me. I root for the uniform. Learned that the day Klecko left for the Colts.

What brought on that observation? But nope never have. I'm a Jeans and a T shirt guy, who works at home. I just took a break and unfortunately have to go back.

Lots of excitement for BOTH teams this right now. It's going to be a very interesting year.

Unless you believe Ryan can't evaluate defensive talent then you have to accept the fact that he believes Ellis is third behind those two unproven players that would have been in front of him. That's the contract they offered and that's what they must believe.

They haven't paid him a dime yet, BTW. IF, after he sees him on the field a few weeks, BB agrees with you that he isn't worth $4MM, then he'll show him the door and it won't cost the Pats a dime. He has to make the team to get that money. It the same for all the Vet DLmen the Pats brought in.

If he DOES have something left BB will not only pay him the money, he'll root for him to get more with the incentives. Hey the Jets may very well have ANOTHER shot at signing Ellis for the Vet minimum in just a few weeks

Ellis will make the cut. He still has some gas in the tank and will certainly contribute to the DL this season. I'd be shocked if he didn't make the final 53.

Another way to interpret those actions is, Ryan doesn't have the money or doesn't think Ellis is worth the money that the Pats had to give Ellis....and HOPES that his 2 rookies will work out .....eventually

Trust me I like Wilkerson, and hoped the Pats would draft him with their 2nd pick. But regardless of how good this kid EVENTUALLY might be, right now he was considered to be raw and in need of development under the best of conditions....and this off season hasn't been the best of conditions.

Even in decline, there is no way that Wilkerson at THIS moment in time is a better football player than Sean Ellis. Next season is of course another story..

I agree but he still has to pass the physical. That could be where it all falls apart.

So the CS started a guy all last year that you say did not contribute? And someone who started all last year is now finished?

    You are a homer.

I think Rex Ryan can evaluate defensive talent, certainly better than I can. But just because Ryan thinks something, it doesn't make him right.

I also happen to think Bill Belichick can evaluate defensive talent, and he seems to see Shaun Ellis as a quality contributor, and someone who can still make an impact.

But perhaps, as PatFanKen suggested, the contract had more to do with the Jets' cap situation rather than Ryan's assessment. In fact, the last time Rex Ryan saw Shaun Ellis, he was using him more than any other D lineman to help them win games. When a coach plays a guy a lot, it usually means he thinks the guy is a pretty good player.

He's gone, he's overpaid, he's making $1.5 million more than last year.

End of story, anyway you look at it, he doesn't deserve that much and I would've been pissed had we paid him that much.

If he matches his 4 sack season last year and just earns the base $4mill he's getting paid $1 million per sack. No thank you.

It's a question of where you are in line. For Ryan, Ellis is a liablility, for Bellichick he is an improvement. That's how each made their offers.

Ummm, even without Shaun Ellis the Patriots have a better D line. Pouha and Devito aren't anywhere close to as good as Wilfork and Haynesworth. Mike Wright is better than anyone else on the Jets and after that both teams just have unproven young guys.

If Ellis is on the roster for week 1 isn't his contract fully guaranteed? Why would the Pats pay him 4 million? I'm convinced he makes it through camp, he gets cut before the first week and then the Pats offer him a contract after week 1 for the veteran minimum.

Where did we get off Ellis? Ryan had already named a rookie the starter even before Ellis made up his mind. He certainly didn't do that because he thought Ellis was better. And Haynesworth, are you kidding? He has been out of football for the last two years. He was good in 2007 and then cashed in with a 100 million dollar contract. Do you really think he cares?
