"Newly-signed defensive lineman Shaun Ellis has been placed on the active/physically unable to perform list, according to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times and Scout.com.

What this means is that Ellis was not ready to practice upon signing with the team on Monday. He can resume practicing at any time, and still counts against the 90-man roster limit while he is on the active/PUP list.

If Ellis does not resume practicing by the final cut-down to 53 players, the team would have the option of placing Ellis on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, which would sideline Ellis for at least the first six weeks of the regular season."

Ellis had a offseason hip injury and hasn't even taken his conditioning test yet. Hmmmm, Interesting.

Shows how much he stayed in shape while awaiting a new contract.

Belicheck is gonna pump him for info and then he won't make the final cut. He has no interest in paying him 4 million a year. Why would the Pats pay him $4 million a year if no one else offered more then the minimum? His agent should have gotten that money guaranteed.

Patriots have 21 defensive lineman in camp. How many will they actually carry? Does anyone think Ellis will make the opening day roster?

So if Ellis gets cut, do you think he'd sign back with the Jets? Talk about a double agent, secret screw move! It would be beautiful if we have the roster space.

In my opinion, I don't think he comes back to the jets if they cut him. If the jets weren't willing or able to offer him more then the minimum and his spot can be used to develop one of the young lineman then it's good that they moved on. It's always better to get rid of a player one year early, then one year late.

The Jets have Mo, Kenrick Ellis, Devito, Pouha, Ripo, Dixon and Gilbert. I'd rather have these hungry players then Ellis for one more year.

I haven't seen it anywhere that it's guaranteed. Do you have a link? I don't believe that Belicheck would guarantee 4 million to an older defensive player.

There was a rumor put out that the full contract amount was guaranteed, but it hasn't had any legitimate support.

How is it cheating to sign a guy to get information out of him?

Agreed. I was merely suggesting bringing him back for the ironic value.

There are a bunch of Active/PUP players all over the league right now. With no offseason programs teams are making sure players are 100% ready to go before they get them out on the field.

All the wishful thinkers on here are willing to jump on anything that makes them feel better about the guy going to the Pats.

Now all the lame "pumping for info and cutting" conspiracy theorists are coming out in droves.

No way the Pats signed this guy for that kind of scratch for any other reason than they think he can contribute and help them win games on the field. We'll find out if they were right or wrong soon enough.

What a lot of people don't know is that if he's placed on IR then the Pats only have to pay him half his salary. Things may have changed in the newest CBA but as of a few years ago that was the case.
