if we do win this year, cotch would miss out on a ring and dont think thats right cause I think he still has it. Look at him last year vs browns in OT with that huge catch for the 1st down while limping
And he's 7 yrs younger than derrick mason. To mason's credit - he has good hands and is a reliable experienced leader who plays through injuries and he's a responsible family man who isn't rolling around getting drunk and driving and getting into barfights like an irresponsible moron. So there is that going for him. Its still a young man's league however.
you need a healthy balance of veterans and young players. Mason would be great to learn from for a guy like Kerley.
Mason may very well be a better possession guy than Cotchery. But that isn't a knock on Jerricho because Mason is a VERY good player. This is a guy that just last year spent time as a # 2 for a playoff team (with an inexperienced QB much like Sanchez) and produced. The one thing that concerns me with this scenario is the lack of a deep threat. Other than Santonio, who is more of a YAC or deep curl type, this wouldn't give us a "Go route" guy anywhere on the roster. You have to wonder if that's by design to be more of a ball control type offense, or what? The only young player on the roster with any deep ball ability is possibly Turner...and he'd really need to work on his route running and release to fill that role.
My biggest problem with this, if we do indeed get rid of Cotch, is that next year we will be walking into the season with no receivers other than Holmes under contract (not counting Turner, Kearley, McKnight because I don't see them as legit #2's or #3's just yet). We will have limited cap space to work with. Yes, we'd be even more limited with Cotch, but at least we'd know we have a guy on the roster that CAN be a #2. We don't know if Plax will work out, and if he does we don't know that some team won't swoop in and offer him more money. I'm assuming if Mason comes aboard it's going to be on a one year deal and even if it isn't, he's going to be 38, aka, probably time to hang'em up. I like Mason a lot for depth and even if he does replace Cotch this year, I think it's an upgrade. I just don't like getting rid of a 29 year old WR that has proven himself in the NFL and given his all to this franchise since the day we drafted him.
Don't get me wrong, I believe Burress is going to be very good for the Jets...but other than in the red zone, I think for the most part his go route days are over. He will no longer have that type of release or foot speed. He will be great for using his big body on intermediate routes to keep the chains moving, very effective in the red zone and deadly at the goal line. But he's not taking the top off a 2 or 3 deep during the 2 minute offense.
I remember mason getting a ton of catches against us last year in the opener. Rex always thinks because someone had a good game against him that they're super good.
Really? Cotch has had exactly 1 season in which he had 1K yards. Mason had a better season then Tom Brady's newest weapon. He had a better Yards per catch avg and 3 more TD's on a SB contending team.
It is possible that the organization doesn't feel Kerley is ready yet to step into the #4 WR role, and that this doesn't mean the end of Cotchery. Kerley wasn't a great receiver prospect, he was projected to go later than he did but the Jets could have wanted him for his return skills. I don't think they expect much from Scottie McKnight either since he wasn't he even supposed to be drafted. Most teams carry 6 WRs, and if they don't see Patrick Turner making the team, they would have a spot open and could go with 1) Holmes 2) Burress 3) Cotchery 4) Mason 5) Kerley 6) McKnight. Or this could just be insurance if they don't expect Cotchery to last all season health-wise.
Ravens_Examiner Samuel Njoku I have confirmed reports that Derrick Mason will sign with #Jets tomorrow. #ravens
Did you bother to look at Mason's numbers from last year? I suggest you do. He was much better then Cotch and it's not even close. He nearly doubled the yards Cotch had and about 20 more catches. Throw in he also had 5 more TD's.
This team looked at Floyd and reportedly had interest for about a week. In the end, I'm guessing he was looking for a multi-year deal (obviously) and the team didn't want to commit money with a tight cap to a 30 year old receiver who has never been particularly impressive in a heavy passing system in San Diego, even when he was the de facto #1 last year. I can't say I blame them. Mason is insurance in case Plaxico gets hurt. For the most part, we know exactly what we're getting from him, and he'll come cheaply and on a one year deal.
I disagree....that's what they said about a motivated Randy Moss in 2007. Not saying Burress is going to light it up like Moss did....but he's motivated. I'm sure he can still be a deep threat on Go Routes.
Personal feeling here is the Jets are stocking on Plax and Derrick and will do something with Cotch and then push for Marques Colston or one of the beasts in the 2012 WR class...I mean that class is the best ever for WR UFA
