Exactly, if they're going to have the same production then I'd take Mason in a second.

It's natural to be concerned that he won't keep his numbers up at age 37 (that's why Baltimore is letting one of their team leaders walk, after all,) but as a #3 receiver that's a risk we should take. Cap space is going to be tight next year, so if we can swap Cotchery out without losing anything on the field I think we have to do it.

Not to mention Tom Moore's input on how to use Keller more like Indy used their TE's!

    the salient point.

Going from Cotch to Mason might actually be an upgrade at #3 WR (given Mason's penchant for catching first downs).....but the key point to such a move, is the near 4 million it would free up for next years cap.

If we could add some sort of asset by trading Cotch in the process?....even a 5th or 6th rounder, all the better.

If Mason signs and Cotchery stays on the roster, then who is the odd man out if the Jets keep 6 WR's? Turner, Kerley or McKinght? I think Kerley has too much potential and may be used on special teams as well as any wildcat formations. That means Turner vs McKinght for the final spot on the roster.

People, Cotchery is gone. None of this if Mason signs and Cotchery stays. Mason signs, Cotchery is done as a Jet....

Losing Cotchery is a mistake, He has a few more good years. Derrick Mason is a 1 hit wonder, hes like 40. Hes not THAT much better then Cotchery. Watch Cotchery go to the Pats and own us. It's not always about stats.

Well this is just another bullshit argument to back up your other one which just failed. You're right, it's not all about stats. But Mason ousts Cotchery in just about every intangible mentioned as well. I love Cotchery's fire and competitiveness as much as the next guy, but it's a huge upgrade, talent wise and financially.

On 63 catchable balls thrown Cotchery's way last year, he caught 53. (15.87% drop rate, third worst in the NFL)

On 66 catchable balls thrown Mason's way last year, he caught 62. (6.06% drop rate, 12th best)

Funny you say this... Mike Greenberg this afternoon on Kay's show said the same thing,,, that Cotchery dropped a million balls last season.

On 248 catchable balls thrown Mason's way the last three years.....he's dropped only 16....(6.45%, 10th best in the NFL over that time, 3rd best amongst WR's who had at least 200 balls thrown their way)

In terms of on-field production I disagree, a 37 yrs old Mason is not better than a 28 yrs old Cotchery (even though he's coming back from surgery). They're very similar imo and I'd probably give the edge to Cotchery on this.
(Of course a 29 yr old Mason is waaay better than Cotchery).

However in terms of financial implications and what he brings to the locker room Mason > Cotchery so, since it's a small downgrade production-wise, I like this move.

yeah but look at his other years. He had 1 bad year cause he was hurt, now everyone thinks hes old and washed up. That kinda thinking is what burns you.

It is a huge upgrade. The stats back it up. Mason at his age is not dropping balls like Cotchery is, and he's renowned for being a clutch, first-down catcher. Mark can't possibly be any happier with that.
