sorry if this is the wrong place, but

    1) how much money do we have committed next year?
    2) who are our pending free agents next season?
    3) do we know what Holmes, Cromartie and harris are due next season?

ive read a few places next year will be cap hell for us, but cant really find anything to substantiate it. NYjetscap.com doesnt seem to be very complete for 2012

It was partly tongue in cheek. After the craziness that's gone on the past few years his work next year looks to be more tweaking than signing big name guys. he also has to prep himself for the upcoming FA class after the '12 and '13 season.

It looks workable. Tough to say without knowing the cap # but on the surface it seems manageable.

I think with the new rookie wage scale in place we'll see a lot more kids being thrown into the fire in year 2-3 to allow flexibility in years when there are a lot of FA's on the team. Its imperative that they and all teams draft well during this transition phase over the next few years. The age on this team in few years could be a real issue but that's a topic for another day.

I don't think anyone knows the exact numbers yet for next year but its pushing the cap already if you add in all the recent signings and re-negotiated guaranteed contracts. I think someone said it was $87mm before recent contracts. If you add in $30mm for Harris($9mm), Tone$(10mm) and Cro ($9mm) as a rough guide they're already at $117mm plus add in Smith, the impact of the guarantees on Scott and Pace etc. A quick view says they're already at this years cap # come next year. Details of contracts may change it a few million but its not moving $10mm away from the cap.

The FA class next year seems manageable. Leonhard and Pouha are the biggest names on D.

The real hell comes in if a few key starters go down with injury and there isn't a back up ready to step in. There seems to be enough coverage on D this year (although OLB may be an issue) but the OL is very thin as is back up TE.

With Harris only having a $4M cap hit this year, I'd guess his contract basically only pays him $1M this year, with like a $12M signing bonus. In order to reach the overall guaranteed money total however, he's gotta have so much in option bonuses hanging around the rest of the deal, that the whole thing almost looks to be guaranteed. The dead money hit from cutting him would make it disadvantageous to cut and sign for less in 2014 or something.

I'm gonna love to see what this deal looks like though. Maybe we just fully guaranteed his 2011-2013 seasons, and the only unguaranteed money is his 2014 salary.

That's actually a definite possibility. Guarantee the next two years at just over $8 million per and leave the last $6.5 million open. That might help the idea of restructuring and extension when we see where he's at in 2014.

Just curious, since reading your posts recently gives me the impression you know more than anyone else here about cap matters, how do you feel about our cap prospects next season?

Harris and Tone will likely have cap hits even higher than that, too. It'll be interesting to see where Tanny goes next year. The Sanchez restructure is a given, and the proposed Cotch trade would help. If we really are sitting pretty under the cap this year, we could cut Cotchery and bring him back (or a replacement) as a backup plan for the #2 this year.

Wow, I like the guy, but we could have sign 3 defensive starters for that kind of cash. That did not free up and CAP money. Even with the franchise tag he would only have got $10M this year, we saved nothing....

    Totally surprised

How many more threads that have nothing to do with the OLB position are going to include questions about Ositadinma Umenyiora?

I'm hearing a lot of speculation that something else is coming this year but nothing specific. Any ideas on who else is available? Maybe an RFA? You know Tanny will give up the draft picks.

TE/S/OLB in my opinion is where we could add a luxury player. Rex seems content with giving Westerman a shot at OLB. What S are possibilities? Any dual threat TE's?

I think the Braylon ship has sailed.

Great news. Glad to see Harris taken care of. One of my favorites on the team.

    That could be interesting.
I don't like spending too much on TE's, but worth looking into as he could help in a number of ways.

it doesnt matter how many contracts you restructure you still have to pay the piper. they might be set up ok for this season but it without a doubt will be getting uglier in the next couple years. no doubt about it. all that money has to go against the cap at some point

Also, 3-4 OLBs will be strong in the 1st 2 rounds.

As of early Aug, WR & OLB have to be the frontrunner position of need next April.

The money paid to Harris is in large part 'Cover My Ass' for tanny and REX.

When you have the highest paid (and most talented) DB tandem in the NFL, you BETTER, and I do mean FUCKING BETTER be able to stop the run. You BETTER have a David Harris in the middle, or Cromartie AND Revis (and their combine $20M/yr) become completely irrelevant real, REAL quick.

Some of you may remember the Raiders running 22 straight NON-passing plays down our throats and laughing after every 10 yard gain.

The $8M/yr we paid to Harris, the best run stopper in the NFL, is all about the $20M/yr we paid to the two gentleman playing 10 yards behind him.

    Thank you.

I think you know I'll be keeping a close eye on Chase Thomas. It'll be interesting to see how he plays out from under Fangio's eye.

Those are definitely the positions of need next year.
