The Patriots can have him for a 6th rounder and bucket of chowder.
Everyone else has to give a 2nd or higher + their first born.

That is a good point. He would an instant upgrade for the pass rush. He would have something to prove. Do you think he could make the switch from DE to OLB in Rex's system? And would command big money to come in and play for the Jets?

Yes he would command big money, plus he's 29, plus he's never played OLB, plus not worth a first rounder

Why wouldn't the Giants trade him to us? We're not in their division.

Because there is an inherent rivalry between the two organizations and the Giants supposedly hate all of the bravado coming from the other side of town. The Giants don't deal Osi to us unless the deal is made on their terms (or, in other words, unless they are raping us in the trade).

Also, Osi isn't really a great fit here. He's a flashy but inconsistent 4-3 end who we would have to pay through the teeth for, and personally, i think he is a tad bit overrated.

And can you imagine what happens if the Giants trade him, their pass rush suffers and he comes to the Jets and sets the sack record? I know that's unlikely as fuck, but I think for the Giants, the NY press makes the idea of trading anyone to us distasteful.

He doesnt need to break any records... just lead the jets in sacks (which he absolutely would) and the Giants will have egg on their faces

right. and you would never see a coach tweek his system because a talent became availble to him.that would be as crazy as belichick getting haynesworth even though he has historically ran 3-4 defenses everywhere he's been.

He actually ran a 4-3 his first 3 years with the pats including the first Superbowl. Also to add to your point, so much of the league runs 3 WR or 2TE looks that more than half of the plays on D are in sub packages anyway, often with 4 man fronts. The idea that a guy can't play for your team because he comes from a different system is overblown. The real question is whether he is worth the cost, and whether you think you can fit him in to enough packages to be worth the risk.

Why is this even a discussion? Osi wants to cash in on a fat, top-5 DE contract and the Jets shouldn't be dishing that out plus a 7th round pick in 2014, much less a first.

if Osi was a free agent, we couldnt even sign him. So you think we're gonna give up draft picks and THEN sign him?

I agree that it is both extremely childish and inexplicably dumb from a business standpoint. However, that doesn't make it any less TRUE. It's just reality, fella.

We really do need a pass rusher. We haven't had one since John Abraham left. I think Umenyiora could be that guy but I can't see how we could make this trade and afford him. Of the guys currently on the roster I'm most intrigued by Westerman and think he could fill that void.

It'd be awesome if Westerman could become that guy but not all UDFAs turn into James Harrison/Adalius Thomas.

I know, but I have seen glimpses of real talent with Westerman. Now he'll get a real opportunity to play now that Gholston is gone.
