Well, someone explained it above, but as good as he is, trading him away for cap space to maybe sign an additional blocking TE or something, might be a smart move. And after working out Todd Heap, it seems like Rex might be looking that direction. Also, an additional 4 million in cap space is nothing to laugh at.
We have all our starting slots filled, so not big money is needed, plus we will free up $5M a year after we resign Harris to a long deal. That $4-5M could get us another big plash or two smaller ones. Guys I would like are: S James Ihedigbo (One of my favorite backups.) S Abram Elam (Liked when we was here and he did pretty good in Cleveland.) S Donte Whitner (Tackling machine last year with 140 tackles.) S Brodney Pool (He knows our system and was reliable.) S Bernard Pollard (111 tackles, 4 FF, 2.5 sackles...good stats, great size) OLB/DE Manny Lawson (34 experience, solid depth guy, may thrive under Rex.) OLB/DE Matt Roth (34 experience, know our defense, would give needed pass rush.) TE Zach Miller (Young, big pass catching machine.)
Save the last 3, none of those offer a significant upgrade to what the Jets have now. Digs has been a backup so far, Elam and Bernard are coverage liabilities, Pool did nothing to warrant being resigned, and Whitner's 140 tackles tell me that their front 7 and their back 4 were abused. It's never a good thing for a DB to lead the team in tackles. Lawson could turn it around with the Jets, or he'll be a cheaper, younger Cactus. Roth is a solid passrusher, but I don't think he'll be the answer to the passrush. I'd love to get Miller, but he wants to stay in Oakland. He visited Seattle to send a message to them to hurry up...
At some point the low round draft picks and UDFA's are going to have step in and develop the depth of this team. An unknown LB or S is gonna make this team. Maybe the Morgan kid from Va Tech could be a decent cover safety and develop his game over the next year or two. Same with the LB Mallore from Central Michigan. You can't have expensive backups at every position.
Good "pernt." It would make the draft and scouting pointless if there weren't some sleepers who could come in and make an unexpected, yet major impact. I remember there used to be a little guy who went undrafted and walked onto this team back in 95. Some of you might remember him too. It was unfortunate that the teams he was on couldn't make it to the big game, but that certainly does not change his impact and value he had for this franchise. Long live Wayne!
Roth seems to be more of a run stopper so I would rather take a look at lawson and i would love to see keller and miller playing together
What about Tamba Hali? I don't hear his name mentioned but I saw on the scroll on NFL Network that he's a free agent.
It would be nice to have a pass rusher, but I don't know if there's still one out there worth bringing in. Westerman it is............. I think the Jets are solid as they are right now.
another safety, another linebacker, another tight end, and another kick returner/reciever and of course shaun ellis
