Found this pretty interesting http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/01/ladainian-tomlinson-takes-a-big-pay-cut/ LaDainian Tomlinson takes a big pay cut Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 1, 2011, 10:51 AM EDT APLaDainian Tomlinson’s role is expected to decrease this season, and so is his salary. ESPN.com’s John Clayton reports Tomlinson will “only” get $1.1 million this year, down from $2.625 million. That is a significant pay cut and it likely means the Jets told Tomlinson he would get released if he didn’t take the deal. The Jets were lightly rumored through NFL Network to be interested in Ronnie Brown, which may have created additional leverage for the team. In one sense, the news is surprising because Tomlinson exceeded all reasonable expectations in 2010. On the other hand, the Jets like Shonn Greene and Joe McKnight, while Tomlinson struggled down the stretch last year. A pay cut like this makes us wonder if Tomlinson is even guaranteed to make the roster.
Maybe he thinks the Jets give him a good chance to win a SB and he was willing to take less to make the team better? Could he be the RAREST of players who find that winning at this point in his career, truly is more important than $$? Maybe I'm giving him too much credit?
He's made tons of cash over his career. And yes, he's a different type of player and person... but he's made so much money over the duration of his career, both salary and outside endorsement deals, another million won't seem that much to him.
The guy wants to win a ring and will play for peanuts to have a chance at one.. I really think if he was able to play for the rookie minimum this year and it was his only offer from the Jets he'd probably take it to stay and play for this team.
Well, you have to include the cost of a new tattoo for whatever team he ended up signing with, so the pay cut really isn't that large. Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using Tapatalk
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2011/08/jets_running_back_ladainian_to.html The article in the OP is the usual PFT shit. I don't see that there's any way LT doesn't make the roster.
Plus, he probably knows he wouldn't get any more from another contender. Getting $2 mil from a non-contender is bad business. He'll make more just from local endorsements and shit in the NY market if the Jets succeed like they have been.
That's just Greg Rosenthal. He's the same guy that took all the heat from the LeBron question about not showing up in the 4th quarter. I like him cause he's got balls and isn't one of these media types who have [insert collective player's] scrotum hanging on his chin.
LT at this point is more of an insurance policy for Greene and a mentor to the new RB's. I wouldn't be surprised if he was considered expendable. This is definitely going to be his last year playing, and I believe he knows that.
