I know most Jet fans think we need to re-sign Pool or sign a safety, but couldn't we give Dwight Lowery a shot to play there? He hasn't done much at corner since his rookie season but still shows the ability to go get the ball. He's ok at coverage and I think he would do better at safety.

Didnt we have him at safety a few games last year. The one where he picked off Favre comes to mind especially he also did well at safety against the Bears.

Seriously, this needed a thread? He's already been moved there.

Yes but people keep wanting us to sign somebody instead of giving him a shot to start

It's a bit risky to think he'll take to the position immediately. I think most people are trying to secure depth. Right now, we have Leonhard/Smith/Lowery/Cook. There's quite a bit of uncertainty there.

Exactly! Smith is a pure run stopper, Cook is ok nothing great and I have no idea how Lowery will do. He seems to be all ball hawk, avg cover skills for a corner. Its not known how he'd be against the run. That said I think I'd rather have him over Smith at free safety. Smith was eaten alive in coverage last year. If Lowery can help eliminate that hole in their D (which to me was a bigger weakness than the lack of a pass rush) it may go a long way to helping them secure games. They let too many teams stay in games because they were able to sustain drives going up against Smith in coverage last year when they absolutely had to move the chains.

Definitely some question marks, however, if we get Cro, I think Lowery should switch to full-time Safety because we can allow him to learn and transition to that position with Revis/Cro/Wilson/Strickland/Cole as the CBs.

I would love to see lowery out there
he is faster and a better jumper than smith and not a walking unsportsmanlike conduct flag waiting to happen

I dont get why so many people on this forum like Smith... out side of a few hard hits he has never impressed me...

they have been training lowery at saftey since rex got there i believe
its time he got a chance

lowery and leonard would do great back there

Smith is a good third safety to have around as he can also line up at LB in certain sets. He has value for depth.

Lowery got burned on deep balls at safety badly. I would not want him starting at safety at all. The jets need a true free safety next to leonhard. If they don't bring back Pool they need another player like him.

Smith should also not be starting at safety. He's extremely valuable on specials and lacks coverage skills but Rex uses him in special roles in his defense.

Yep. And if he signs, I'd imagine people would be happy with our safeties.

Ahhh good times, I was right in front of him (sec 117) when he got that pick.

Lowery is a good tackler and has good ballhawking skills matched with soft hands. His coverage skills have always been the major concern but at FS he should be alright I think.

I do hope we bring back Diggs, he's one of my top 3 favorite players on the the team. I really believe if he could work on his coverage skills and be able to pass protect a little better (which he has been making strides at) he will be a starter.

Did you mean to say "undersized linebackers"? I'm pretty sure you meant to say "undersized linebackers."

Eric Smith is a fine 3rd safety, but he's not starting material IMO. Dwight Lowery has shown fine ball skills and he's more of a zone than man cover guy anyway. I think he could be a good "center fielder" (AKA the Ed Reed role) but he's not big enough to cover any tight ends. It will be interesting to see if he starts any pre-season games.
